I'm going to have to disagree with the majority of this thread. Like a couple of others have already stated, most sororities and fraternities are NOT the stereotypical ones you see in TV and movies. They're not all about drinking and hazing and partying, I promise.

They're about the gathering of like minded people. I myself was a member of an all women music fraternity when I was in college, and looking back, I don't think I would have gotten through everything I did without my sisters. I spent five years at my school and during those five years I had my Big sister to watch after me, and two Littles to take care of, and an entire sisterhood of women from coast to coast in America who I could call friend and count upon should I have the urge or need to. Being in my fraternity opened up a lot of doors for me and helped me to meet so many people that I never would have otherwise. And we weren't even one of the big greek groups on campus.

To pose a question to those of you who want to abolish sororities and fraternities; how much actual exposure have you had to these societies?

To pose a question to those of you who say you would rather join a club; how is a club so different than a sorority or fraternity?

at my college, we have the typical 'party frats/sororites' that are just there for the good time they offer, but there are a number of organizations on our campus that have nothing to do with that lifestyle and are networking/program based (frats/soro's for psychology majors, nursing majors, etc.) and some that focus on community service and other beneficial services that help many people outside of the organization. it really depends on the sort of frat/soro you're looking at.

I really don't think it needs to be abolished
Honestly whenever you get a bunch of college kids and alcohol together bad things are going to happen.
But that's really just a stereotype. There are a lot of them are set up for academic purposes only the social ones get the bad reps. It's like any other social group.

Well, we dont have fraternities or sororities in the UK, but binge drinking and partying amongst the young in this country is a huge problem.

so basically, i dont think its gonna make a blind bit of difference... if young adults wanna go get rat-arsed? theyre damn well going to.

I live in Pennsylvania, and here Sororities are actually illegal. It just so happens that more than 8 girls in a house is considered a brothel. (this is what happens when your state is formed by Quakers.)
