In search to answer to some questions, you were walking in the library of the Academy, when you suddenly noticed a huge book placed on a pedestal at the back of the room. It looked almost sacred, like some sort of ancient altar, surrounded by the dim light coming from the stained-glass windows.

Pushed by your curiosity, you got closer and looked at the book. On its cover, you can see, written in gold letter on the dark red leather cover, the words "The Encyclopedia". You reached you hand to touch the book, but before your hand came in contact with it, the book opened by magic to an index page. You looked at it, and noticed it was containing information about anything and everything concerning the Academy. You passed your finger on the list, until you find the topic interesting you...

The World of Terra:

The planet where the story takes place is called Terra in the common human language. The name was given by the first human settlers, who crossed the portals without realizing it, and therefore didn't know they were not on their home planet anymore. With the time passing, the meeting with strange creatures and the arrivals of more humans, they realized that their world had changed, though they still kept the name in memory of their ancestors. That's also the reason why some of the names in the game might look familiar: the first humans gave the names they knew to places and monsters, often referring to their own mythology and history.

Terra is in fact pretty similar to the Earth, which explains why the first humans had not realized immediately that they had come to a new world. It is supposed to be of the same size and shape as the Earth, a large sphere slightly flatten at the poles. However, since the means of transportation are not yet as developed as those on Earth, it is hard to make a precise survey of the planet.

The planet is in orbit around a bright yellow sun. It was believed for long that Terra was the only planet in the solar system, but some astronomic researches tend to show that it is in fact the forth planet, starting from the sun. A couple of other planets can also be found farther away from the new planet, though they are less visible than the first ones, making their exact number hard to find. Terra rotates around its sun in 365 days and rotates on itself in 24 hours.

Terra also possesses two satellites (moons), roughly of the same size, called Baliana and Heose. Baliana reflects the light of the sun with a pinkish hue, while Heose gives it a green shade. They are both easily visible at night, and sometimes during the day too. They both have a distinct ellipsoid orbit, which causes them to be farther or closer away from Terra, sometimes causing eclipses. They have the same revolution period, meaning they both make a turn around Terra in 30 days.

Terra is covered by large continents and oceans. It is believed that there is a large continent at the North pole, which soil is rich in iron minerals, creating a magnetic field similar to the one on Earth. There is also an opposite continent at the South pole. Both of those are covered in snow year-round, and the water around them is tricky to navigate into, due to some strong sea currents. The main continent on Terra is called Arcadia. It is the one where the Academy is located, and since a lot of the mapping missions started from the Academy, it is often referred to as the center of every maps. There are also reports of two other continents existing, though there are no exact map of them.

Arcadia is pretty similar to Europe or North America. It is colder in its northern part and warmer to the south. It is mostly made of large plains, ideal for agriculture. It also possesses great and old forests, mountain areas, some deserts, and of course many lakes and rivers. The climate of Arcadia is temperated and it has four distinct seasons, like on the Earth. The population of Arcadia mostly lives in rural areas, often in small villages, though some large towns have emerged in more important spots.

The Academy is located in the northern part of Arcadia. The region around it is known for the high occurrence of portals appearing, which makes it the ideal place to greet the people who have fallen through the portals. A large village have grown about 3 miles away from the Academy, on the side of a large lake, to provide all the resources and supplies needed by the army of students and monsters of the school. In exchange. the school has sworn to protect the village and help its villagers as best as it could. The villagers mostly live of agriculture and fishery, though some fine crafters can be found among them too. The roads of the Academy also lead to more foreign places, which will be described in further topics.

The Academy:

The Academy's main building is a large and somewhat frightening castle. It is built out of large blocks of pale beige stone and strong dark wood from the nearby forest. The castle is made of four large squared towers surrounding a massive central fortress. All of those constructions are linked by various covered halls on their lower levels, and protected at their feet by a thick wall, made with the same materials as the castle itself, that surrounds the entire complex. The castle rests on a large basement composed of at least three underground levels. Some parts of it have collapsed with the years, creating strange caves and unwelcoming environments which entrance is forbidden to lower-level students. It is said that the Academy also possesses some secret passages, but of course, those don't appear on any maps.

The yard surrounding the Academy is divided in four equal parts by the roads leading to the main building. The north-western corner is mostly covered by a large and thick forest. A clearing and a large lake can however be found close to the West Road. The weather on that part of the courtyard is usually rainy and cold, due to some old water magic residing in this section. The south-western corner is composed of a large, flat yard. Some trees grow here and there, and some benches have been placed under those to provide a nice resting place for the students. Along the South Road, some small enclosed gardens with flowers, benches and fountains are also available for more private meetings. This part is usually the place where students meet to hang out or train, and it is also the place where most of the events are old. The magical energy of this part is quite neutral, making it a friendly spot for everyone. The south-eastern corner is mostly reserved for the crops of the Academy. Though the Academy gets most of its food and supplies from the surrounding towns, a large field has been built in this corner to make sure the students would never come short on supplies, especially during raids and sieges. With the years though, more buildings have been built on that part of the yard, mostly stables and other accommodations for the monsters. Students usually come to this part to help with the crops or take care of the monsters, or for some special classes. The magic energy here is mostly related to fire, but it's not as strong as in other place, meaning it doesn't cause problems to anyone and just warm the place up a little. The north-eastern corner is partially covered in forest, though the southern part of it has been cut down with years and replaced by large orchards. The forest is also a bit thinner and more welcoming than the forest in the north-western part, making this a good spot to teach young students about the woods. The wind magic dominates over this part of the yard, though it is not extremely strong and doesn't usually cause problem.

Following the roads away from the Academy, one would then encounter the exterior wall, the limit of the Academy's land. It is made of the same large blocks of beige stone than the main castle and probably dates from the same period, though no one can confirm it. It is about ten meters high, with a paved walkway built on the top, protected by a thinner wall of stones with holes from where archers used to fire arrows. Four doors have been built to allow access inside, one for each of the main road, and each is surrounded by two small square towers. A similar tower can also be found in each corner of the wall. Four large monsters are in charge of protecting the doors and screening the people wishing to enter. The roads then lead to various locations, usually a small village first, and then into the wilderness. The younger students are not allowed to venture out of the exterior wall alone, for their own safety.

The last and perhaps most intriguing feature of the Academy is in fact the one you can't see. Starting on top of the exterior wall, a magical dome protects the sky above the school. No one really knows what it is, or why it's there, though it is guessed the first inhabitants of the castle created it to protect themselves from air attacks. The magical shield acts pretty much like a giant rubber glass put on top of the school. If something was to come in contact with it, that thing would be projected in the other direction with the same force it hits the wall with. The shield only blocks living being though, so it cannot stop arrows or bullets, or whatever could be thrown or drop from the sky. However, it seems to let animals pass through it without problem, but only normal animals. It will however forbid anyone to enter, including students, monsters or employees from the school, and will block teleportation as well as normal flight. It also only works for people trying to enter the school, and not for people leaving it. The magic shield can sometimes be seen during the darkest, coldest nights of winter, as a thin barrier of blue and silvery light covering the school. This phenomenon is not fully understand, but it is said to be a magnificent spectacle to watch.

Ranks and Exams

"Rank" is the term used by the Academy to designate the titles given to the students and employees, according to their knowledge and skills. Their are four main ranks, each represented by a badge and an armband of a specific color. The badge is usually worn at school while the armband is used during missions. The ranking system is pretty simple and is mostly based on exams, which test the capacities of the students to see if they are worthy of ranking up. As students show their progress, they will also earn special privileges. The following is a more in depth explanation of each rank:

Newbie: Newbie isn't officially a rank at the Academy, though it is the term used to qualify the newcomers. Newbies must learn the basis of the world they now live in, as well as the basis of the Academy's work. They can be identified by the fact that they don't wear any badge or armband, and also because they often appear not to know where they are and what they are doing. Helping newbies is strongly recommended to any higher-level student.

~ First Exam ~
This exam has been implemented to judge the skills the newbies have learnt. It can be passed at any time by contacting the person in charge of it (the name of the person in charge will be put on the Academy's board). It usually consist of a written exam and an evaluation in situ, though the examinator can choose to do anything he/she wants as long as it tests the basic abilities a higher level student should have.

Bronze Badge: The bronze badge is the first badge earned at the Academy and shows that you know the basis of this world. It is earned by successfully passing the first exam. The bronze badge students are regrouped in teams of three and lead by a gold badge student, often refer to as mentor. The gold badge student is there to help the progression of the younger students and teach them everything they will need to have a successful career at the Academy. The learning method consists of various training sessions and simple missions. The bronze badge students also gain the right to get a monster as partner. They can, in fact, care for up to two monsters, but only the first one is provided by the Academy. The other must be obtained by doing missions. Finally, the bronze badge students have the possibility to use most of the Watch's features.

~ Second Exam ~
This exam has been created to judge the progress of the bronze badge students. It takes place every couple of months. An announcement is usually made two weeks before the exam takes place, so that the people interested can get ready. In order to participate to this exam, the young students must have a bronze badge and must have done a certain number of missions with their team. They must also get the approval from their mentor. The specific requirements for the exam are published in the announcement and can change for different exam session. The content of the exam itself also change from session to session and are left to the examinators' discretion.

Silver Badge: The silver badge is earned by passing the second exam with success. Silver badge students are no longer considered like young kids who need to be taught things, but rather as young adults who have learnt the skills to successfully teach themselves what they need to know. They still have access to their mentor and still work in team, but they can also train alone, with another mentor or with other teams to learn new things. They can specialized in one field of study, giving them various advantages. They have access to a wider range of missions than lower-level students. They can also keep up to five monsters under their care. The rest of their lives is pretty much the same as it was when they were bronze badge students.

~Third Exam~
This exam is used to select the students worthy of wearing a gold badge. Unlike the other exams, this one is only accessible on invitation. A special group of gold and platinum badge wearers meet every couple of months to decide if anyone shows enough capability to get a chance of getting a gold badge. It is said certain criteria must be met before getting a chance to pass this exam, but they are not known precisely. Having done an excellent job as silver badge is however often considered like the easiest way to get through this. The comity then send invitation to the selected people and invite them to pass an exam. The content of the exam varies from people to people, depending mostly of what they have specialized into.

Gold Badge: The gold badge is the highest level for a student of the Academy. It is earned by passing the third exam with success, though it is said some people have gotten it without passing any exam. However, those people were exceptionally gifted, and therefore the younger students should focus on their training if they want to get to this level. The gold badge free you from the obligation of working with your old team, though gold badge students are often asked to be mentors for younger students. Gold badge students usually spend most of their time training or doing missions for the Academy. They can do any type of missions, though they usually take care of the hardest ones in group of gold badge students and leave the easier for the younger students. They can keep up to 10 monsters under their care and have access to the various services the Academy offers, including the breeding service. They also have access to all the features of the Watch, except for the few reserved to teachers.

Platinum Badge: The platinum badge is given to the people who have shown the highest level of skills and the greatest devotion to the Academy. There is no exam or other challenge that would automatically promote someone to this level. Most of the platinum badge owners have achieved this rank by training in one specific field until they became the best of the bests. They are usually teachers, though some also fill other random jobs for the school. Their obligations mostly depends of what they were hired for, but they must all be ready to protect the Academy and its students at all cost. Platinum badge wearers have the right to keep an unlimited amount of monsters and items. They also have access to some special Watch's features, mostly things that are used for teaching or protecting others. The rest of their advantages varies according to their jobs.

Missions:

Missions, as their name says, are quests or jobs given by the Academy to its students. Missions serve two main purposes. First, they bring money to the Academy, as people must pay a fee when they request something. That fee varies according to how difficult the request is. Secondly, missions are used as a training method for students. It is believed that the field experience they can get from those is far superior to whatever they could get from sitting on school benches all day long reading books. For those two reasons, students must do missions whenever the higher instances of the Academy ask them to.

Missions are divided in five ranks, according to their difficulty and the general risks they imply. Though a team leader can choose whatever mission he prefers for his team, he will usually use the ranking as an easy way to sort things out and eliminate all the missions supposedly too dangerous for his students. Ranks are given by the people in charge of receiving the requests from the public, based on a chart of criteria. Here's a summary of that chart:

D-Rank Missions: Missions with that rank are pretty much safe for everyone. They imply no fighting and no real danger. They are also pretty simple to do, usually only requesting to find or gather a certain thing for the requester. It is usually the first kind of missions students do, since they are perfect to teach the basis of teamwork and missioning. Though they also have low or no rewards, which is why most teams move quickly to the next rank.

C-Rank Missions: Missions with that rank are just a little more difficult than D-Ranks. They imply a low chance of fighting or complication, but nothing really dangerous. They are also good for beginners, and since their mentor should be able to do C-Rank missions alone, they are perfect to teach the basis of fighting without putting the kids in danger. They always have a little rewards for students, but nothing really important. This is probably the most frequent type of missions.

B-Rank Missions: B-Rank missions always imply fighting and dangers. However, those dangers and fights should be of a moderate level. They are also quite frequent, though a little less than C-Ranks. They usually take the form of escorting someone or carrying something valuable to a certain destination, though some weirder things have already been reported. They have a larger reward for the successful students, sometimes containing rarer items.

A-Rank Missions: A-Rank is synonymous of high dangers and risks to any student. Those missions are done by teams of gold badge students, sometimes with the help of a platinum badge. They imply lots of fights and very little time to rest in between those, as well as other highly-risked actions. They are rarer than the two previous ranks, but they are always taken with the most serious and appreciation, since they bring lots of money and renown to the Academy.

S-Rank Missions: Missions with that rank are extremely rare. The “S” in the name is supposed to mean either “super” or “special”, referring in the first case to their high-risk content and in the second to the rare opportunity they offer. They are not necessarily harder then A-Ranks, but usually have a special twist added to them. They can be longer or require certain steps to be done in order to be completed. They are not usually given by the public, but mostly by the Academy itself. It is said that the gold badge students all get a chance to do one of those missions, with as reward a special gift, often a powerful monster or item. Though, a lot of them choose to wait before doing this mission, as they only get one shot to do it right and will never have another chance if they fail.

The Watch:

Each student and employee of the Academy is given a special watch-like item at their arrival at the school. This watch, slightly bigger than a normal one, is in fact a sort of mini-computer used to make everyone's life easier. It possesses various functions, some accessible to everyone while others are reserved to students of a certain rank. Those functions are activated by clicking the various icons on the Watch's screen. However, each usage sucks energy from the Watch's wearer, and therefore some are reserved to extreme situations. Here's a list of most of the functions:

Item Holder: Each Watch has the ability to open a portal to a small, enclosed plane, often refer to as a “pocket”. This little universe is the perfect place to store valuable or fragile items, since it is stable and can only be access by one Watch. It is also possible to lock the pocket with a password, so that only some trusted people can access it. The space in a pocket is about 2 m³ wide, but it can be expand via some special items. Though the space is big enough for someone to stand in it, it isn't recommended to hide in a pocket because the air capacity is really limited. The item store in a Watch's pocket can be access by clicking on the bag icon on the Watch's screen, which open a small portal just over the Watch so that one can grab the desired item. It needs some energy to be used, and a little time, so it's often advised to keep some basic everyday supplies on you and only use the Watch for special things.

Monster Stats and Caller: Each Watch automatically keeps a list of the monsters its wearer has befriended. It shows general stats such as health, mood and description, as well as the age and level of the creature. The Watch can also generate a portal that will transport a monster to his owner's side, but that requires a lot of energy from the Watch's wearer and therefore is only used in critical situation. The stats, however, requires almost no energy.

Map and Compass: The Watches possess a GPS-like system, which can show a map either directly on the touchscreen of the Watch or as an holograph right above the screen. The map shows the various landscape around the user, as well as little dots to indicate the position of his teammates and mentor. That map also comes with a small compass feature to help people get around. It requires almost no energy to be used.

Radio: The radio includes in the Watch is basically like a small walky-talky system. It is set to communicate with one's teammates and the Academy in a range of 1km outside, though it doesn't work as greatly inside because of the various obstacles. It can also be modified to work from a greater distance or to communcate with other students. The radio doesn't require much energy and is often used in mission to stay in contact.

Shield: The shield is only accessible to Gold Badge students and above. When used, it creates a shield dome around the user, which is big enough for five people to stand inside. The shield protects the people inside from everything, but it only lasts for a minute and then needs 9 minutes to recharge. It requires lots of energy to be used and it is reserved for extremely dangerous situations.

It is said that other special functions can be added to the Watch, but those are usually reserved for higher students and employees. They normally require a special piece of equipment, called a chip, that is inserted in one's Watch. However, chips are quite rare and hard to find, which also explains why fewer people have access to those functions.

Specializations:

When a student reach the Silver Badge level, he is allowed to choose one subject he would like to study more in depth. This subject is called a specialization or field of study. Students are not forced to specialize in anything and they can wait as long as they want before choosing to specialize, if they ever choose to. The students who wish to enter the specialization program should contact the people in charge (see the Academy's Board).

The Academy keeps a list of the specialization offered. As the student base grows, more fields will be added to suit the growing needs. All specialization have their advantages. They don't really have disadvantages, but of course, the people specializing in one thing have less time to spend on other things, including their regular training, which can have some effects after a while. The choice of a specialization is mostly a question of personal taste. Though it should be known, before one makes a choice, that a student can only specialize in one thing, due to the amount of time and effort required. A student can however decide to stop studying his specialization at any time, but he will not be able to learn another one. This will also limit the advantages gained during the special studies.

Specialization: Crafter

Class: Crafter
Requirements: Silver Badge
Description: Crafters have the amazing ability to craft items, and even monsters, out of ordinary objects. The path to become a great crafter is long, and the first steps are often consider rough and boring, but the efforts of the student following that way will be rewarded one day. It is strongly suggested that the students who want to become crafters find themselves a mentor that is already a renown crafter. This specialization leads to become monster crafter or item crafter.
Bonuses: Ability to create minor monsters and items; ability to repair those monsters and items.

Specialization: Botanist

Class: Botanist
Requirements: Silver Badge
Description: Botanists have a wide knowledge of plants. They can therefore use those plants for their various needs. They also have some abilities to tame plant-like monsters and forest monsters. This specialization doesn't require the students to have a botanist as mentor, as most of the knowledge can be learnt from books.
Bonuses: Ability to use plants for food, drugs, poisons, etc.; ability to tame plant-like monsters and monsters from the forest with more ease.

Specialization: Tamer

Class: Tamer
Requirements: Silver Badge
Description: Tamers are specialized in taming monsters, as their name says. They usually possess great ability in communication and animal behaviours and are able to convince other creatures to follow them. The first stage of the tamer's training is quite basic, and they actually don't get to really approach monsters until they can prove they are good enough. Tamers are also in charge of watching the various monsters of the Academy and capture new monsters when needed. Almost all of the higher-level students have a basic training in taming, so there's no need to find a special mentor for the student who would like to follow that path.
Bonuses: Ability to catch monsters, especially animal-like monsters, with more ease; knowledge in animal behaviours and biology, and therefore greater ability to train and care for monsters.

Monsters' Form:

The first indication about a monster can be found in the title of its entry. Monsters are split into two categories: lower level ones and higher level ones. The lower level monsters usually have a lower intelligence than humans or are unable to use and understand common languages. Those monsters needs to be captured and tamed, since it is the only way to get them to do what you want. They can be captured by students of the same level or above (see below for more information about Level). Higher level monsters are usually humanoid and have an intelligence equal or superior to an average human. They can speak, even if they have their own particular language, and need to be convince to join your team instead of being captured. They will most likely only join a student that has a gold badge.

Name: The name by which a monster's race is recognized at the Academy. Other names can also be mentioned, for example the name used by the race to describe itself.

Level: This shows the required level to be able to tame a monster of that race. This is limited both by the personality of the monsters and by the ability of the students of the said level. A monster with a higher level isn't necessarily stronger than one with a lower level, but maybe as a stronger personality or don't appreciate kids or something like that.

Habitat: The habitat is the place(s) where a race can be found most often. Some monsters are widely spread while others live in a quite specific area. Individual monsters can sometimes be found out of their natural habitat, but they are most likely lost or doing something special.

Frequency: The frequency indicates the number of time a monster from one race can be encountered. Some are quite common while others, often coming from smaller population, can only be seen in special occasions. With the habitat, the frequency is a good indication for students wishing to catch a specific monster.

Element: The element is used to describe what kind of magical powers and strengths a race possesses. It doesn't mean that all monsters have uber-awesome magical powers, nor that all the monsters from one element have the exact same powers, but it is there to help you understand quickly what one race can do. Higher level monsters can often have multiple elements, which are split in primary and secondary elements. The primary element of a race is for something all the monsters of that race has, while the secondary is often related to certain special individuals or sub-species.

Intelligence: The intelligence level is a key factor when interacting with a monster. Some are closer to animal and have a very low intelligence, and therefore will respond better if teach by standard taming monsters, while some monsters are even more intelligent than your average human and won't appreciate being threaten like an idiots.

Danger Level: The danger level from a monster is determined both by his behaviour and his intelligence level. Some monsters are extremely aggressive, but quite dumb, making them less dangerous than some more treacherous monsters, even if those are generally less aggressive. The danger level is based on the standard capacity of a bronze badge students and is indicated by a color: green, yellow, orange, red and black. Green is for monsters that are 100% not dangerous. Yellow is for monsters who have a slight chance of harming a bronze badge student. Orange is for the toughest monster a bronze badge student could handle in team of three. Red is for the toughest monster a group of silver badge students could handle. Black is extremely rare and extremely dangerous, and should only be fought by gold badge, preferably in group.

Description: A more in-depth description of the race. The previous indications are usually pretty short and only used for quick reference, while this is the place to get more precise information. The description is usually split into a couple of paragraphs, but will always contain at least two, one for the overall look and physical abilities of the monsters and one for their behaviours and mental capacities. Indications on the social life and other facts can also be added for well-known races.

Monsters:

Many races inhabit the world of Terra. Some have been there for as long as anyone can remember, while others are said to have appeared recently, maybe brought in by the portals. They are usually referred to as “monsters”, because it was how the first humans to come to Terra perceived them. However, it shouldn't be considered as an insult, as it doesn't have any negative connotation. It's merely like using the term “plant” or “animal” to describe other living beings. However, it is to note that the more intelligent races are often called by their name, or simply called “humanoid”, to prevent misunderstanding and potential conflict.

Many species of monsters can be found all over the world. Some are good, some are bad, some simply prefer to ignore the others... They are an essential part of the students' learning process, since most of the live of a student, both inside and outside from the Academy, will be punctuated by meeting with various monsters. This is the reason why, after passing the entrance exam, a student will receive a monster with his bronze badge. This creature will act as a study partner, guide, protector, and hopefully as a friend too. The student will then get a chance to earn the trust of other creatures during his missions.

The Academy keeps a list of all the monsters who have been encountered by the students and employees. This list can be found in the library of the school, and a summary version is available through the watch system. The list is updated frequently though, so students are better checking it often to make sure their knowledge is up-to-date.
