Yup, that' usually how it works at the end of your event. You can exchange your leftover event currency (shards in this case), and sometimes your leftover quest items, for silver.
And don't worry about the newbiness. Most people who join Midorea are a bit lost on their first days, especially when there's lots of things going on (event and such). If you need help with anything, I suggest checking the Information Kiosk first, to see if your question is answered somewhere. And if you can't find your answer, just ask! People around here are really friendly and love helping newcomers. ^^
