Uh, no, sorry. Most of the skills were disable, probably to prevent abuse and such, so the only one you can use right now is the forge skill (when you repair weapons at the forge). So even if you took a mage, you won't be able to enchant items, and if you picked a thief, you won't be able to steal items. That's also one of the reasons I suggested picking a fighter, since the other classes won't give you anything special anyway.
