[Yare]

Gwenlin followed curiously. She wondered where Mary was taking her.

Mary ran up the steps of her front door and up to her room. She pulled out a T-shirt and a pair of jeans and handed them to Gwenlin. She signaled her to get dressed into these in the bathroom.

[Yare]

Gwenlin looked at them curiously. She went to the other room and pulled off the animal skin dress she wore, then tried to figure out how to put on the clothes.

Mary sat outside the room and waited for Gwenlin to finish, wondering why she took so long.

[Yare]

Gwenlin eventually came out, looking slightly confused. The thing going over the top half of her body was on backwards, but she was more puzzled by whatever was supposed to go over her legs; she didn't know how to make them stay up.

Mary giggled. She got out a sequined belt and put it around her waist. She took it off and gestured Gwenlin to try. And to turn the shirt the other way around.

[Yare]

Gwenlin tried putting on the belt, but it didn't work; it was too hard to do when the pants weren't staying together the way Mary's did. She didn't fully understand the gesture about the shirt, and eventually she just looked at Mary in an expression of tiredness and hopelessness.

Mary tried her best to stifle a giggle and put a serious face on. 'Here, I'll help you,' she said. She tightened the belt for Gwenlin and pulled the arms out of the shirt, turned it around, and pulled them back out. 'There.'

[Yare]

Gwenlin looked down at herself and pointed to the jeans under the belt. They weren't done up the same way Mary's were, and she wondered if it was important that they were.

Mary sighed. 'Some people are hopeless,' she muttered to herself, as she fixed Gwenlin's dilemma. 'Now, about your nails,' she said. She got out a small kit complete with nail cutters, nail filers, nail polish, nail polish remover, and much more. She smiled.

[Yare]

Gwenlin looked confused at the things Mary got out. What were they for? Some of them didn't look good, but Gwenlin didn't think Mary would give her anything unsafe.

Mary gently took Gwenlin's hand and got out the nail clipper. She cut a nail, and the next, and the next. Then she got out the nail filer, to smoothen and shape the edges. Once this was done, she got out a nail polish, of a dark red colour. She gave each nail two coats. Then she got out something that looked like nail polish, but was transparent, and helped keep it on for longer. She wasn't quite sure of what it was called, but she gave one coat each nail. Then she smiled, satisfied. 'Next hand,' she said, taking the other and repeating the process.

[Yare]

Gwenlin kept trying to draw her hand away during the process, and as soon as Mary let go of it she hugged both hands to her. She shook her head, shaking slightly. Being clean was expected, but changing appearances was never allowed.

Mary smiled as she finished. 'Much better,' she said smiling. Then she glanced up at the hair and all its split ends. 'Tch tch,' she said, as she put away her nail kit and got out a comb and a pair of scissors especially made for cutting hair. She smiled at the poor girl's face as she sat her on a chair in front a mirror.

Gwenlin figured she could predict what it was this time. She took her hair in her hands and looked up at Mary, fear and unhappiness evident in her eyes, and shook her head.
