I suggest you start by checking the forums and making a couple posts. This should get you enough silver to buy yourself a good weapon. I suggest you start with the volleyball (sold at the Weaponsmith for 5 silver). It isn't really strong, but it has a good duration, and it is perfect for destroying low-level monsters.
Battling is good to get money quickly, though it can get boring after a while, so I suggest doing a combo of posting and battling.
