Welcome!

This is a role play between me (Xenocena), Icewing, Virva, and Rhemiyl. Please, I ask that if you're not one of us four you don't post in this topic, although you're welcome to stalk the thread. Wink

The Story

It's the year 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, and locals are out for blood. But only that, more specifically, of witches. Suspicion runs rampant in this small colony, and people, particularly young women, are brought to trial by the dozens for witchcraft. But is this just a strange superstition? Or are there actually witches among the colonies?
The answer to both of these questions is no. However, there is a group of extremely rare shape shifters living among the colonists, and they are soon brought out into the open by the humans and even others of their kind.
The only way to escape death by hanging- or worse, being burned at a stake- is to claim that someone is controlling you to do witchcraft. You will then be considered innocent, and that other person is immediately considered guilty and executed. With this single shot at escape from death, everyone, human and shape shifter alike, is pointing fingers, and friends are turning in friends as tensions rise in these small colonies. Will anyone find a way to stop a major catastrophe in the making? Or will all of the innocent shape shifters soon face execution?

The Rules

*1: As mentioned above, only Xenocena, Icewing, Virva, and Rhemiyl may post in this topic. Others, however, are free to read it and follow the story as they like.

*3: Keep it PG-13. That being said, romance is strongly encouraged. Bouncy Heart

*5: Everyone, please reserve a post at the beginning of this topic to post your characters in.

*Name: Caine
*Nickname(s): None
*Gender: Male
*Age: 21
*Race: Shape Shifter
*Animal: European Magpie
*Appearence - Human: One of his most striking features is his hair; it's naturally black, but it shines with varying green, blue, and bronze streaks in the light. It's very straight and cut somewhat messily and unevenly, hanging down over his upper back. His skin is pale, although not remarkably so, and his eyes are very dark. He's around 5'9''- not very tall, but thankfully not short, either. He has a very light frame, yet still retains some muscle mass despite being rather lightly built.
*Appearence - Animal: He's about 46 cm. long. His head, neck and chest are all black while his belly and shoulder feathers are white. His wings are black with a glossy green and blue sheen, and his primaries have white inner webs. He has an iridescent, graduated black tail with a green, blue, and bronze sheen. His beak and legs are black, and he has extremely dark, virtually black eyes.
*Personality: He's very intelligent, but that doesn't mean he has to show it. He tends to come off as promiscuous and flirtatious, attributes very alien to the early 17th century society, and most colonists are already quite wary of him. He's also quite a jokester, and it's very hard for others to take him seriously. Even so, despite his light hearted exterior, underneath he is actually a very serious, intelligent young man. He's just learned to hide that with his jokes and occasional obscene suggestions.
*History: He doesn't have a very remarkable history. Born in Ireland, he and his parents migrated to America when he was still quite young by flying with a boat heading overseas, and he doesn't remember much of his early life. His parents, once he was old enough to live alone, had moved slightly farther south to live near Philadelphia, while he chose to stay in Massachusetts, where they had first lived. He's been there for over a decade, now, and most of the colonists know him quite well, even if they think he's a bit strange.
*Orientation: Closeted Homosexual
*Martial Status: Single (Monogamous)
*Crush: None
*Strange Abilities/Powers: None, apart from shape shifting.
*Other: A single Magpie is often considered bad luck, and magpies, like ravens, crows, and black cats, are often associated with witchcraft.

*Orientation: Unknown (She's never really been in love)

*Name: Aoi
*Nickname(s): None
*Gender: Male
*Age: 24
*Race: Shape Shifter
*Animal: White-Tailed Deer
*Appearence - Human: Aoi is quite tall, standing at almost 6 feet in height. He has ear length pure white hair that is cut in a spiky, androgynous hairstyle. His eyes, due to the lack of pigment in them, are a pale blue, so pale that his eyes almost seem to be lavender due to the blood vessels underneath the iris being visible. His high cheekbones and pointed chin give him the appearance that he could easily be either male or female. Aoi has pale white, porcelain coloured skin. Due to his albinism, Aoi cannot be out in the sunlight for too long, and, when he is outside, he is usually wearing very long clothes that cover most of his skin.
*Appearence - Animal: Standing at 3 feet four inches at the shoulder, Aoi has the average height of a white tailed deer. He has a lean body and long legs, like most deer. His fur is pure white, the same colour a's his hair in human form. He has pale lavender eyes like in human form.
*Personality: Aoi has a very quiet personality and a generally calm demeanor. He is polite in his speech, his thoughts less so, and tries to avoid saying things that would upset people. He has about as much courage as a caterpillar, and is very flighty. Aoi is cautious in nature, and doesn't trust too many people. He does make a good friend once you get to know him, even if he does seem a bit cold at first.
*History: Growing up as the only albino in a town of people with superstitious streaks a mile wide wasn't exactly simple for Aoi. The only reason why he wasn't burned at the stake yet was because his mother, the village healer, said he was blessed by God. Now that his mother is dead, Aoi has no one to protect him but himself. The villagers have accused him of doing multiple wicked things that he really didn't do, so Aoi has always had to stay out of trouble and was never allowed to act like a normal teenage male, not allowed to pull pranks or insult people. Because of this, Aoi has developed an unusually shy and polite personality.
*Orientation: Asexual. Meaning he'll date people of any gender or sexuality, but doesn't actually have any sexual desires.
*Martial Status: Not married, and probably never will be.
*Crush: Open, but he most likely won't be feeling anything in return.
*Strange Abilities/Powers: He has a good sense for plants, which ones heal and which ones harm, but no other special abilities.
*Other: Nothing ^^

*Name: Jacques
*Nickname(s): Jacques
*Gender: Male
*Age: 27
*Race: Human
*Animal: NA
*Appearence - Human:
*Appearence - Animal:

Name: Amaranta (Spanish for "unfading")
Nickname(s): Amaranth (given to her by the witch), Am
Gender: Female
Age: 26
Race: Shapeshifter
Animal: cat
Appearence - Human: Amaranth has long, almost curly, dark brown hair as most of her ancestors(Spanish) had. Her skin is fairly dark (since in her cat form, she is always loafing around in the sunlight). Her eyes are a regular brown, but at times the pupils will slit like a cat's when her emotions get the best of her. She loves dressing up, but really lacks the money to do so, so she'll normally wear average styles and this one expensive looking charm her "master" had made. She's built rather frail and her disposition, being so meek, accentuates this greatly.
Appearance - Animal: Average black cat, sleek fur, long body
Personality: Standoffish and soft-spoken, Amaranth avoids crowds of people and is easily frightened. She, however, enjoys looking onto crowds, but never from the inside. She rather loves spending time with her master, a witch, at her cottage on the outer corner of the settlement. Amaranth also enjoys walks, any time of the day, and doing chores. Her favorite color is green and she'll often be found wearing it.
History: She'd been married with no children years back, they divorced when they'd found out she was barren and unable to provide him a son. It was ingrained in her to become the perfect wife growing up so she became quite adept at everyday chores and tasks, however, her social life and know-how took a hit from this. Although being a model wife in all other aspects, her inability to have children had he pushed aside from the idea for nearly a decade. She'd began taking comfort speaking to an elderly woman she'd met one afternoon while she stopped for a rest and began daydreaming at the woman's gate, watching her pick herbs and the like from her small garden beside her home. The cat had imagined her life as a wife and the witch took notice to this, inviting her in for some tea and a chat. They talked through the night and this became routine. Often, in the beginning, Amaranth would watch her in her shifted form and on one of these occasions, the witch approached her, offering her food. She'd begun visiting more often in this state and the woman offers her the name Amaranth, after her favorite flower, and the young girl she'd met, secretly knowing it was the same girl in the guise of the feline she pet. When Amaranth confronted her about it, asking how she knew, she states that she'd rather go by her new altered name, trying to detach herself from her Spanish roots for their former cruelty to the Natives and her inability to find a husband. The old woman smiles and offers her the position of her watch-eye, as all good witches need a black cat. This is the first time Amaranth is made aware of her being a witch.
Orientation: Asexual; a cat knows love is love and love is to be appreciated and adored.
Martial Status: Divorced, kind of traditional about marriage
Crush: (some random farmer kid or something, we don't even have a plot XD)
Strange Abilities/Powers: Ability to sense other shifters from scent alone. She can also locate just about any herb, spice, or plant with her years of training under the witch. However, she is terrible at using them. So long as she wears the witch's charm, she can speak in her cat form, although the witch fairly understands an animal without. This is so they can converse more freely when Amaranth is shifted.
Other: Is the classic "black cat" to a witch.

Age: Appears to be in her fifties, which is quite uncommon
Race: Human

Strange Abilities/Powers: She's a witch
Other: She's a witch

Name: Alice
Nickname: none
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Race: Shape Shifter
Animal: Goat
Appearance-Human: she is 5'6, with neck length black green hair that is a bit shaggy. Her eyes are a turquoise green. She has a bit of a tan but mostly peach coloured. She's a bit short for her stature. but she is also light.
Appearance-Animal: she is a Anglo-Nubian goat. which is a proud graceful dairy goat. She is an "aristocratic" appearing goat and has very long, pendulous ears that hang close to the head. The Anglo-Nubian carries a decidedly Roman nose and is always short-haired. A mature doe should stand at least 30 inches at the withers and weigh 135 pounds or over,The head is the distinctive breed characteristic, with the facial profile between the eyes and the muzzle being strongly convex. The ears are long (extending at least one inch beyond the muzzle when held flat along the face)wide and pendulous. They lie close to the head at the temple and flare slightly out and well forward at the rounded tip, forming a "bell" shape. The ears are not thick, with the cartilage well defined. The hair is short, fine and glossy.
Personality: a bit stubborn for her age, reserved but somewhat smart. A bit proud in her ways, she hardly admits when she is wrong. A bit shy when she meets someone at first but then after warming up she can be a bit friendly. She comes off as an airhead because she can never be serious about anything. But there are exceptions when she is. A bit of a romantic.
History: Born in England when she was little. It was a few months after she was born her father uplifted the family of her and her sister to America. After her sister had died of the flu, she decided to live her life before she died and traveled to Philadelphia with her father for a while. It was a couple months after this, her father died of the flu and she was alone. She decided to move to Massachusettes and live a life for a while before heading once more out to see the world. She has stayed in Massachusettes for a couple years not really moving nor adventuring and the people who grown to love and know her think she is a bit odd. For she's always planning for the day she'd see the world again (ooc hope I did this right)
Orientation: Straight
Marital Status: Single, not married, never will be, for she craves a life of adventure and freedom.
Crush: Open
Strange Abilities/Powers: Alice learned at the age of five how to heal people, she learned many curing and resurrection spells. She also can make snow flakes fall from the sky.
Other: a scar on her right eye from an accident when she and her sister where playing with a ball. She went to fetch it and ended up with the piece of fence in her eye.

[OoC: I have a suggestion. Why don't we each make a human character of the opposite gender of our character, just to add a little more variety to the roleplay? Because currently we only have shapeshifters.]

Caine drew his tan overcoat tightly around him as he walked down the road, shivering as the cool northern breeze picked up. Dry, dead leaves rustled and skittered across the pavement, the last remnants of autumn quickly turning into winter. The crackled beneath Caine’s bare feet and scratched his ankles, leaving bright red marks on his skin, but he took no notice of this as he slipped off the dirt road and into the forest, now almost jogging over the painfully rough ground covered in sticks and twigs.

Reaching a sheltered clearing roughly one hundred meters off the road, Caine threw off his overcoat. Most people- Caine included- would expect someone to wear clothes under an overcoat, but this time Caine stood naked, his bare skin touching the air for mere seconds before it was covered in feathers. Spreading his wings, Caine, now quite a bit shorter, hopped off the ground and flew out of the trees.

[OoC:Sure, I wouldn't mind playing a few NPCs. I'm normally the one forced with the job, anyhow XD
I just finished up my character profile and I'm ready to just start roleplaying]

Amaranta yawned, her voice taking on a more catlike meow. Her sleek body stretched, spine arching, and then she sat up straight to turn to the woman working below her. The cat's gleaming eyes took to watching the pestle in her hands work various herbs before her. Her voice rang into a joyous meow. "And good morning to you, Amaranth," the elderly woman stopped her work briefly to pat the feline on the head, she'd lowered her head into the affection with a coy smile across her small fanged mouth. "What is it this time? No... allow me to guess," the young cat stepped down the stairwell of books and notes to get into a better position. Her head raised and she sniffed the air, not to get too close and scatter the herbs with her breath. "Is this for another love potion?" The feline cocked her head, wondering which lady in town could have been having troubles. "Close," the witch smiled, her eyes soft and focused on her work, sprinkling another spice in. Amaranth moved in attempt to catch glimpse of the handwritten labels. "Oh my!" she moved back, a paw lifted to her mouth. "I wonder, sometimes...."

The black cat's fur shined in the early morning sunlight as she hopped off the tabletop and burrowed beneath a robe left on the floor for her. Her form shifted to that of a human woman and she adjusted the robe over her body to a more proper position. "Shall I put on some tea? Are you hungry?" The woman moved to the small kitchenette on the other side of the tall books toward the front of the house. "Aye," the old woman replied. "Thank you, kindly."

[I don't mind, seeing I always have to play the npcs when I am roleplaying with people.]

The morning sun had rose a bit as Alice stood outside the small hut. She stretched wondering how today would play out. Alice looked up at the sky hoping it would at least rain today. She also wondered where Jacob had gotten to. It didn't take long to get firewood did it? She shook her head then with a chuckle. Taking a deep breath and placing the hooded cloak over her head she headed out to find the farm boy. She knew he liked to take his time with getting the supplies so she knew it would be a while to return. Alice also knew he liked to day dream

Making her way down the small cobble like road, Alice wondered why Jacob had come to work with her in the first place. She had just come to this small place a month ago and he had accepted her help in an instance. She shrugged as she pulled the cloak tighter, the cold air getting to her. She wondered which way he had gone since she didn't know the woods as good as everyone else. [/i]

[Well, we can all just pop in random NPCs and see how it goes. If one of them turns into a major character, we can always create a quick character sheet.]

Caine fluttered his small wings to glide over the forest, sticking close to the trees and dodging random twigs and leaves. He always had to be careful, flying in the daylight like this. Especially with the town's warped fascination with witches- although even on a normal day, the children in town liked to throw rocks at him. A lone magpie was known to bring bad luck, as part of an old superstitious rhyme. There was also another superstition stating that one must always nod in respect to a lone magpie- however, people always conveniently forgot that part.

Some people were okay, though. Or better than okay. Slowing his flight, Caine alighted on a small rock wall outside of a farm house and called three times, quietly, so not to wake any locals. Thankfully, this farm was fairly isolated, but on a clear autumn morning, sound could travel quite quickly.

A girl- well, more of a woman, around 25, stepped out carrying a cloak. She threw this unceremoniously on the magpie, who crowed in annoyance but quickly shifted back to human shape.

Caine grinned and wrapped an arm around the woman, kissing her on the cheek. "And how are we today, McKenna darling?"

[OoC: No, they are not married or in a romantic relationship. Laugh That's just Caine being his usual self. They are basically best friends, though.]

It was a little bit after morning that Alice had become lost in the woods. She had never ventured out this far since the first time she moved here. But that time someone was showing her around the small village. She had forgotten the way and with a sigh stood there a moment. Alice got an idea then, she could probably cover more ground another way. She looked to see if anyone was around and when the coast was clear she turned in to her goat form. Then she continued on her way to find Jacob. She didn't know why he would travel out here but it was getting late and they had things to do. Jacob and her were the ones that always cooked the meals for the entire village. And if they didn't, the people would have to find someone to replace them. They would have lost a day's pay. Alice couldn't afford that. She would have to scold Jacob when she found him.

Hurrying down the path it would seem that Alice had gotten herself even more lost than before. Maybe this was a bad idea and she should have stayed put. But she had to get back with Jacob, she didn't want the village to starve.

[I feel like I should try writing a post. Here's to writers block]
[And, Xeno, don't you dare try and make me roleplay a female unless you want the roleplay to crash and burn]

Leaves rustled underfoot as the pure white deer stepped through the forest, the morning sun causing its fur to turn gold. Suddenly hearing voices, Aoi twisted his head to the side, and quickly bounded off through the woods before the hunters could spot him.

Coming to a small cabin at the edge of the forest, Aoi glanced around to make sure nobody else was there, before shifting into his human form. The tall male quickly grabbed a cloak that he had left in the tree, wrapping it around himself, the dark black fabric harshly contrasting with his skin. He walked into the little cottage before anyone could accuse Aoi of anything other than being half-naked.

"Did they catch you?" he heard Jacques ask.
"Does it look like they did?" Aoi replied, pulling on some clothes.
Jacques sighed. "Well, you could have gotten away."
"Some hunters did almost catch me, but I don't think they recognized me."
"No duh, you were a deer. But could you please remember that even though you're a shapeshifter, you aren't bulletproof?"
"So, what's for food?" Aoi asked, changing the subject.
"Bread," Jacques replied. "And eggs." The short Frenchman walked into the kitchen, Aoi following behind. The table had already been set, and the two males sat down to their meal.

"You would make a good housewife," Aoi said through a mouthful of bread.
"You wish," Jacques muttered under his breath. "You're just not used to people who can actually take care of themselves."
"Hey, I can take care of myself!" Aoi protested.
"Yes, definitely. I only had to rescue you from jail, what, twenty times or so?"

[Wow, that was a longer load of nonsense than I expected XD][/size[

[The only way to improve is to expand your horizons, Icewing! Bouncy Heart]

McKenna pushed Caine away. "Get off me, you dolt." Recognizing an inappropriate reference in the making, she quickly slapped a hand over his mouth. "And don't even think about it." Caine nodded hastily in agreement and she released him, transferring her hand to the folds of his cloak to drag him inside. "What were you thinking, coming here in broad daylight as a magpie?! You could have just walked here like a normal person!"

Caine grimaced, sitting down on a stool in the kitchen and noting, with disappointment, that there was nothing cooking on the stove. "Sorry. Had to come here quickly. I heard there's a witch in the area."

McKenna froze at this, moving only to tuck a strand of wavy red hair behind her ear. "A real one?"

Caine nodded. "She's got a familiar, too, a black cat. Reckon it's a shape shifter?"

"I'm sure it is." McKenna turned to look out of the window. She was a remarkable human, for her time, and quite open minded about shape shifters. Caine had sworn her into secrecy a long time ago, but even without her oath she knew how important it was to keep the shape shifters a secret. "Shall we pay them a visit, then?"

"I think so." With that, Caine hopped off the stool and strode towards the door.

it had been a couple hours and believe it or not Alice had gotten even more lost than before. Not even being able to find the lost boy she sat down once more in her human form placing her head on her knees. Nobody else knew that she had left the hut and she feared no one would find her. In all honesty this was her first time in these parts. She had moved here a bit after the winter months and now she wished she never have. Standing she would have to make a decision. And she did, she didn't care if Jacob came back or not she wasn't going to be lost because of him. She turned and began to walk back the way she came. If she had to, she would lie about where he was. Alice shook her head then, she felt a little bad.

But she decided if he was coming back, he'd come back on his own. But then something hit her, she didn't care if he did. He was such a lazy boy anyways and she had to do all the work. As she made her way back she bumped into a man. He was a bit taller than her with shaggy neck length black hair and green orb like eyes. He was a bit broad shoulder but she didn't mind. He looked a bit cute to her. Of course if she had been watching where she was going she would not have bumped into him.

"I'm sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going," Alice said as she apologize before looking him over. She noticed one thing and she shook her head. "I was looking for the boy Jacob and it lead me here. I was on my way home."

"It's alright," he said before answering once more. "I saw that man with a pie in his hand. He said something about quitting and ran off with the pie. If I knew he was with you I would have stopped him. I was on my way to your little shoppe by the way. Maybe we can walk there together?"

"Alright. Oh where are my manners? I am Alice and you are?" she said with a smile.

"I am Llewellyn, but you can call me Llew." he smiled back then

Alice nodded as the two walked back to her small hut. She knew that Jacob would pull a stunt like that sooner or later and was glad that he left. Now she wouldn't have to deal with his laziness now. But something good had come out of looking for the boy. She had met this nice man.

[Before I get smacked I'll throw a quick post in. I've been so busy lately ><]

They had enjoyed a breakfast, made wonderful by each other's company, and now Amaranta and the elderly woman chatted amongst themselves. The young woman had dressed, and had begun tidying up the place while the witch worked. To anyone else, it would look much like an old woman's place should, though the town knew he as an apothecary, an herbal healer, so it was common to see various plants used for such work around the abode. The Spanish woman yawned, pausing her work with the broom. "Do you need anything while I'm in town today? I should be getting home at some point or else the neighbors would worry." The witch corked the small bottle in her hands and pulled out a quill and ink. "No, darling. Are you leaving now?" Amaranta shook her head softly, continuing the chore. "I'll leave when the all the noise calms down in the market." She'd finished sweeping the worn wooden flooring in no time, having been a professional at such tasks for years. The sun was overcast once more, dimming the light in the room. "I do hope it doesn't storm before then," Amaranta groaned, sitting back at the small table and gazing beyond the window panes.
