Advice?

So this is a vent/ask for help.

So I'm a member of my high school color guard. Don't knokw what it is? We spin saber(a sword), rifle, and flags with the marching band. Random example of color guard i found, this is the FLASHY stuff, we're not that good or numberous

So I'm going to be a junior next year, and I'm 1 of the 5 rising juniors. All of which had ranging interest in being color guard captain. We've been through so much drama getting a new instructor, and now it time for us to get a new captain.

At our school, there has ALWAYS been applications for the interested people to fill out basically saying why they think they would be a good leader. Our band director(who's in charge of EVERYTHING, hiring our instructor, picking our show/music, and leadership in general) is new, and this is his first year picking leadership.

Today, i went in to offer help for Saturday's spin camp for the new people coming in and asking him (and our new instructor who I had no Idea she would be there, I'll refer to her as Amy) if they needed help early to set up. I didn't know he was posting who the leaders are.
He posted up leadership while I was talked to Amy, and I went to see who got what, assuming that guard captain wouldn't be there. It was the second to last person I wanted getting captain.

Here's some of our guard with fake names:
Katie: My friend, she's been doing guard for 2 1/2 years. Quiet and intermediate skills (thats the best we have, its harder for girls to go past 5s), but still interested in captain
Annie: Been doing guard for 3 years, assumes she'd get leader, but she's not very leader-y and wouldn't be good
Joe - the only guy. He's a drill sergant, its easier for him to through higher stuff because he's a guy and has more arm muscle. Has done guard for the same amount of time as be, but has a huge ego.

Why would joe be a bad captain? Because none of us wanted him to be. He wouldn't motivate, but tell us we look like crap. He wouldn't spend time bring us together, because he'd run off to hang with the drummers since those guys are 'cooler'. He gets high at every football game.
Oh, no to mention he will not be in town for preband camp (where we learn skills/some choreography) OR band camp( we learn have our the drill[placement] and half the choreography to the whole show)

There were no forms. None of us got the chance to speak our side.
If I had access to an application, all of us had applied, and he STILL got it. I would deal. But I am so mad, I feel this is completely unfair, but I dont know what to do. The last thing I want to do is cause drama.
I'll openly admit I'm jealous. I wanted to be captain so badly. But going up by myself won't look good at all.

My mom/dad suggested I get some of the girls to come with me who wanted to be captain, and tell him calmly we're upset that we didn't get our fair shot. But I dont know if that would just be worse.

Amy said she was going to talk to him today, and he said something about captain but I dont know what.

Soo.. what should I do?

Yeah, definitely talk to "Amy" about it, tell her about how things usually are(applications and whatnot), and tell her that you, and possibly the other squad members, don't feel that that is right.

The only thing is I dont know how to reach her, other than just to talk to her during our spin camp tomorrow, but I'd rather not to that around the guy. That's just not fair to him.

Maybe you could ask to talk to her privately? I agree though, you should talk to her about it.

OK. I'll just have to get over my nerves, because I don't really know her, I've spoken to her maybe 2 times? So that'll be interesting.. haha.

Why not talk right in front of him? It's a logical case. It's not against him, it's against new procedures.

True, but it could still hurt his feelings and/or appear rude.

Exactly. I didn't want to start drama, especially because 4 of the 5 new members were there and I dont want them to think guard is normally very drama-filled.

Plus, Joe's a huge drama king. He'll take offense to it when I dont mean it.

Yea, you don't want to give the wrong impression about the group to the new members XD and I hate trying to deal with people like that - those that get offended super easily. I'm very blunt and honest, so me and those sorts of people don't mesh very well haha.

I'm very blunt, but I seem to "rally the troops" when I do it. No one really seems to argue against my points, probably because I try to show all points along with mine.

Thank you guys for the advice! I'm going to talk to two of the girls and ask them who they think we should talk to, and hopefully well talk to them tommorrow.

Well he opened up applications again, turns out that he counted the leadership forms fr band for colorguard, and two people including the guy filled it out.

Well, if he opened applications, apply. Also, usually, even if they didn't originally want it, people will grasp for a position, even if its forced onto them. So, if he got "forced" into being a leader when he didn't want to, he probably did want to be a leader afterwards.
