This site is about many things, I'd say. There is an RP section which you can find in The Theater. However, I think it's also about making friends, getting achievement through the battle system, and chatting/discussing in the forums.
You can earn money by posting in the forums. If you haven't, you can always look here to get answers to your questions; Link

I think Reika and Sly pretty much answered your question, but you can also check the Newcomers Help Center linked in my signature for other information and a small newbie charity.

As for the plot, the site itself does have a story about a special world called Midorea, but it is mostly developed during the events and not directly through role-playing. The story page contains some info about it, although it hasn't been updated recently. Most of the other info can be found by reading the info thread for the past events.
A few role-plays taking place in Midorea have been made by members, but they are not "official" (i.e not considered to be a part of what's really happening on Mido), just something to give us a chance to explore the world and have fun and all. As Reika said, they can be found in the Theater, or you can pass by the Guild of Midorean Role-Players linked in my signature to get more info.
