Picture yourself camping. Out in a nice, large, secluded forested type area, with a good sized group of people (60ish; 30 players, 30 NPCs). Now throw in some awesome costumes, weapons, epic battles, nightime attacks on your tent, looting corpses, story-lines and epic quests with magic and skills, that lasts for two nights and three days, and you've got yourself a standard LARP.
It's like camping on crack. So. Much. Fun.  I highly suggest it as a hobby to anyone who cen feasibly do it. There are also ones that only last during the day like Vampire, and most of the White wolf LARPs which only last a single session to the best of my knowledge. And modern ones, again, saving Vampire: Darkages, Vampire: The Masquerade is set in the current time periode. Those are usually cheaper, or free.
