Brief Description of "The Age of Rain"

Genre : Action/Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

Location / Setting : Set in the future, in a world plagued by consistent acid rain and eternal darkness, that has managed to affect certain people differently.

The Story So Far...

IT happened... Global Warming the Scientists were right, we should have listened, we should have prevented this... now, it's too late... the skies are so thick with pollution that we have plummeted into an eternal darkness on Earth, and rain never ceases to fall, but we must be wary of the rain, it's acidic, it's poisonous, and it has the ability to change people...

But, before I tell you about that, I should inform you about the state of the rest of the world... The North and South Poles are nothing but a distant memory... the amount of extinction that followed the great wave of heat that shrouded Earth is almost unimaginable... but, it wasn't just hard on the animals, governments lost control of their citizens due to immense fear and apprehension, riots broke out, stores were looted, houses were burnt to the ground leaving nothing but ghosts behind, all the water on the planet is now polluted, and the little amount of bottled, and stored water left is quickly being depleted... the world as we knew it is gone, and the people of the world are either struggling to live day to day life, in whatever shacks and shelter we can find, or affected by the rain...

The first week of showers were the most terrifying... after all the heat people had rejoiced and celebrated the arrival, some had even open their mouths and drank it in... they all seemed fine at first, just a little curious at the strange odour and taste of it... we didn't know at the time that it took a full day for the affects of the water to set in...

Then the screaming started... terrible, blood curtling screams of people changing from what they were to whatever they would soon become...

And now, here we are, currently too frightened to venture into the unknown and discover whether the acid rain creations are good or evil... but, we all know it won't be too much longer until they happen to find us...

We live on edge, we live in fear...


The Age of Rain has begun...

Lanyia scurried into the forrest and out of the rain, striving for the pseudo protection of the canopy, unsure if she was ever really safe...

She let herself have a moment to catch her breath, leaning up again a great tree trunk, her feet ached... she hadn't rested in so long, yet she was scared to let her guard down even for a second...

Twigs snapped and leaves crunched from the weight of steps from somewhere behind her, she stood so quickly that her head spun a little, and, unable to run any further, she turned towards the sound, and the approaching stranger, and instinctively covered her face with her arms in protection...

Dania gazed at the girl. She slowly walked closer. 'I don't mean you any harm,' she croaked. She sighed, feeling her new beak.

Cautiously, Lanyia dropped her arms back to her sides, she let out a nervous gasp at the sight of her new acquaintance...

"Oh, wow..." she exclaimed, then added sheepishly, "Oh, sorry"

Lanyia was still a little nervous but the gentle nature of the stranger was making her become less and less worried by the moment, she wondered if that was her own accessment or if something supernatural was by any chance changing her mind...

All the same, a wry, nervous grin appeared on her face... "Hi"

'Hello,' said Dania, trying to smile, but because of her beak, she couldn't. She shuffled her feathers, wondering if she would ever get to appreciate her new bird-like features. She sighed. I doubt so, she thought. Then she looked up at the black sky. At least not for flying up there.
Then she looked back at the girl. 'What's your name?' she asked, cocking her head a little.

"Larn- Lanyia" Lanyia croaked nervously. "My name is Lanyia."

She looked in utter amazement at her acquaintance's beautiful plumage.

"Do you have a name???" she quickly added sheepishly. "What am I saying??? Oh course you have a name..."

She blushed nervously.

'My name's Dania,' she said. Again she tried to smile but failed. She rubbed her beak again, as it somehow managed to become a habit.
She looked up at the sky and saw heavy drops of rain falling again. 'If you want to keep you humanity,' she said, 'I suggest you find somewhere a little more sheltered from the sky.' She shuddered, remembering the pain of the transformation.

Lanyia looked up in fearful apprehension of the sky.

"I don't really know my way around here," she sighed nervously, and exhausted. "Would you know of a shack, or some sort of shelter I could take refuge in...??? I don't really trust the forest to keep me dry."

She hoped that others like her new friend were as friendly, but something deep inside told her that she was wrong to assume that.

'Well, I have a sort of giant nest with a roof, if that helps,' said Dania, shrugging. 'In that tree over there,' she pointed. She walked over to it hoping Lanyia would follow her.

Lanyia hesitated only briefly before following her new friend.

"Thank you, I'm ever so grateful," Lanyia replied as the approached the trunk of the tree. "What can I ever do to repay you...???"

She arched her neck up to look at the nest but, no matter how hard she tried all she could see from her angle on the ground was trunk, and branches.

"Oh, erm, how do I- We get up there...???"

Dania chuckled. Flapped her arms/wings and wus already a few metres above the ground. She swooped down and clasped Lanyia's shoulder with a fowerfull clawed foot. She flew up to her nest and put the girl down, then landing.

"Wow," Lanyia exclaimed as her stomach adjusted to its usual position. "That was something."

She looked around the treetop paradise in amazement at its unusual likeness to a post- Global Warming Mansion, suspended here in the branches.

"How does it stay up...???" She asked confused and a little frightened. "It's so large surely it would collapse the tree branch...??? Are you sure we're safe...???"

Dania shrugged. 'Bird instincts told me this was a safe spot,' she said. She smiled as she could tell that Lanyia felt uneasy up here, when she herself felt perfectly at home. 'Are you hungry?' she asked. Her birdyness still hadn't changed her so much to stop liking pizza and start eating worms.

"Ravenous" Lanyia finally admitted to herself.

After surviving on staples she would almost have settled on worms. Her stomach growled as if in response to Dania's question.

"Thank you, sorry I'm so much trouble."

Dania flew out of the nest again, swooping among the trees to collect the sweet little berries on them that no ordinary human could reach. They were a red colour and were very sweet, with a hint of spicyness. Dania landed again in the nest and handed Lanyia some of them.
