Well honestly I am not surprized. Our rabbits will eat there babies when there still alive if we dont make sure they have certain minerals and fats in there diet daily. my aunts throw chuncks of lard/side pork in there cages to prevent it.

I've never heard a cat do it but really dont doubt it would happen.

I'd probably have been like your friend. Even if it gaged and horrified me for the rest of my life I probably would have watched excitedly just out of morbid curiocity. >.<

I can't imagine what's in the animal's mind as they are devouring their own flesh and blood D:

Its not all the unusual for a mother to eat her own kitten. When she has her babies, she eats each after birth. It is because the baby died. It is the mothers natural instinct to clean up the space and get rid of the body. So she ate it to clean it up and such. Its strange, but she also eats her babies pee and poo. So what can you do. It seems strange to people, because they wouldnt do that, but to them it is instinct. If it bothered you so much why didnt you just pick up the body and move it away? It wouldn't hurt you.

O.O
WHAT.THE.HELL.
D:

What kind of a story is that?! Jesus, I'm all sad now, poor kitten!
I love small furry animals, and I would have kicked your cats ass for eating it.
I mean if I had a child, and it died, you wouldn't see me eating it.
But..I guess that's one way to hide a body. ;D
Tee hee hee..sorry for the joke, but I had to, the urge was too strong.

But..uhh...
I once saw a hamster devour it's brother. >.>'
They were babies, and one died from drowning in the water bowl and the other one dragged it out and outright ate it, the whole damn thing!
I was disgusted, but I couldn't look away, it was that type of entertaining thing that is just so NASTY, but you just can't stop looking, afraid you'll miss the gruesome details.
My friend Katie went in the bathroom and threw up everywhere, which grossed me out just as much.
Puke and a hamster devouring it's brother, YUM, SOUNDS LIKE A PARTY TO ME. /sarcasm >.<

What else should that mother cat do? Give it a funeral and bury it? It did the right thing, and even provided her other kittens milk with richer nutrients. Even though some cats show characteristics you see in humans, they are still driven by instinct. My cat was neglected by it's mother, and she refused to feed him. A lot of cats wont feed sick kittens, or kittens with a lot of parasites. It's a waste a resources for them.

D: Oh man, that's a terrible thing to walk in on. I mean, it's not like it's uncommon for a mother to kill her offspring, but seriously. Also, ew -- ants. XD Any sort of swarming bug really grosses me out, especially on a dead thing (like maggots, egh.. not that they swarm, but you get my drift).

I can't believe you RECORDED it, though.

Hmm well in nature the best use for the corpse of a stillborn child is for the mother to eat it to speed up her recovery ^ ^; Sort of like how a female mantis will eat her mate before giving birth~

Also like how a mother bird will eat the egg shells after their chicks hatch. ((dunno if that was mentioned already.))

We felt really bad and waited for my mom to come home and pick it up,but she dragged it the the front porch, ripped it's stomach open and just ate it like we would eat some fried chicken.

for a sec there I read that your mom did that cuz it was put that way lol

Anyways, that is really gross, and sad too that the kitten died, I mean ok the kitten was dead already when her mom ate it, and if it wasnt eaten by her mom it would have been eaten by maggots or something so yeah but still ewww.

Yeah but still it's merely instinct why the mother cat did it. The mother cat can definately use the nutrition from eating it to feed her other kittens. It is only nature. Yeah I know she has more then enough food at her disposal I bet, but instinct never goes away. Just like they eat the placenta when they have given birth since it is very nutritious.

But yeah still its sorta sick what animals can do eh?

One of my hamsters that had a nest was about to eat one of her dead youngs too, I took it out of the cage. No way I was gonna let her do that. But yeah dead animals (and even humans) are normally eaten when they died (unless you cremate yourself), if not by their mothers then by all the icky creatures in the ground. and maggots. >< yuck.

My mum breeds mice to feed to her snakes. Not so good for the babies, but the breeders are sorta pets. Anyway one week she was super busy and forgot to feed them [my step-dad is no help there, even though the snakes are his too]. The pregnant momma ate her husband.
