| I KNOW, COUGY, THAT BUGS ME TOO! D::
I've always wondered how different countries [or even different STATES] teach things. I'm sure their perspective is different.
But what can ya do? It's impossible to be completely unbiased nowadays. Whenever I find a subject that's really interesting, I just try to read different views about it from people with different backgrounds. 'Tis hard to do. D::

| Yes. But if more people had the dedication that you and I do for research and learning, many things could possible be avoided, yes?

| oh jeez, stop whining about biology and math if you're from USA! you have an option answering system (dunno how to call it, hope u know what I mean), for crying out load! say, there are 10 questions and 3 possible answers from which you can choose, and one of three is the right answer. soooo it's like you have what...? *calculates* 0.0017% probability ALL the answers you pick are correct, by CHANCE! ok, 0.0017% isn't much but it is POSSIBLE for you to write an A+ without even knowing the subject or without even reading the questions! AGKDXMAA!!! it makes me want to scream! it's so... >_>
and that's why you need math, for example. It shows you the unfairness of the world xD
and if you're in a hermetically sealed room with light and some green plants, isn't it good to know about photosynthesis? at least you could calculate how much longer you can survive with those plants around you xD

| If I were locked in a room I'd rather know which plants were edible than about photosynthesis.
Really.
I'm just angry because so much of what we learn is useless in life.

| i think it was mentioned that parents don't care if their kids show up or not, and i have to disagree. yes, some parents treat school as a day care of sorts, but many, including my own, took it very seriously, impressing upon me that school, while sometimes redundant and not at all beneficial, has some use. also, if we were to forego standardized education and throw kids right into college/profession training they'd have no chance. you need some base education to even understand what many of the classes talk about. after my first year of college, i regretted not paying enough attention in classes like math and sciences, since liberal arts colleges require you to take some of them again to get into your program. so school, i think, is worth it. you just don't realize it until you're out. :]

| Well, only 2% of what you learn at school is really neccasary in the "real world", most of the time and the other 98% is junk, but for some reason people seem to think people need to know that.
Yet, the 98% is mostly to help people find out what they're good at so they will know what do do in their life and how to continue in that directions while having been taught all of the basics and then some.
Like, I never saw the point of history, and no matter how much fun playing with fire was I really didn't see the point in chemicals. However, that did alert me that I didn't even have to _think_ of continuing into that direction when finishing school.
Now I have my own store and I want to be an authoress on the side so really, most of the things defenitely weren't important directly, but indirectly they made sure I didn't make any major mistakes in trying to find my course in life which I would surely regret.
And though I never thought it would ever get me anywhere, those lessons in German defenitely prove to be helpful after all v.v;;;

| Well, I agree with Yazoo on that.
The point about learning so many things, even if they seem useless, is a way to make you discover things that maybe you haven't thought about at first, but that are interesting to you after all.
And the other reason, specially concerning math and sciences, is that those requires a logical process to be understood and applied. Meaning that when you learn some complex math subject, maybe you will never use that exact thing in the future, but your brain will be used to solving problems and thinking logically, making it easier to apply your thought process in any situation.
In fact, that's mostly why you have so many classes that seems useless. Though their subjects might prove to really be useless to you in the future, the logical or other mental capacities you will use to be able to pass them will stay with you, even if you forget most of the things you learnt. But since those ways to think are not usually conscious and you do them mostly by habit, people seem to think that they were always there and that they didn't learn them at school, and therefor think that school is somewhat useless...

| Highly necessary. Even though I had taken Chemistry last year and I thought it was pointless and difficult, looking back on it, it made my understanding of math and science easier. Once my math teacher said, "You're probably not going to be doing these things in the real world but doing these problems makes you think logically." and that is what school subjects are about.

| School itself is necessary. Some of its so-called teachers and subjects aren't. My high school requires Biology, two Physics classes, Chemistry, Marine Science, and Mechanics in the Science department just to graduate.
As an art student, I find that completely ridiculous. (Especially since you're allowed only one science class per year until senior year.)
You also need to knock down three PE classes, a "Health" class which doesn't count as PE, and a "School Success" class where you sit and idle around for two hours. Nearly everyone at my school is forced to take summer courses because there's not enough room in our schedules to finish all required classes before graduation. -____- This summer I'm taking two PE courses and an Art course. I wish America would create learning environments, not throw unqualified "teachers" into classes with intelligent-sounding names. We're just wasting time here. I mean, I sit Physics class thinking about all the classes I could be taking to further my career in the Arts. Oi...

| I think there are somethings you should know even if you don't use them, such as physics and biology (for a rough example) as I think it is important that you understand how the world around you works. But somethings they teach in school you don't use and don't even really need to know...

| I think that some things you don't need, but they're trying to teach you all sorts of stuff, just in case you want to be like an scientist someday. I think that school is necessary because they're trying to get you inspired (though failure) for stuff in the future. Plus, you don't want to end up as a janitor for the rest of your life, do you? (I don't...Then I couldn't afford a living and play on my laptop all day... ) Plus, they sharpen your skills of writing and stuff, so you get better at writing reports for your boss later on in your life. So overall, I think that school is necessary. Sometimes although hard, school can be fun too (you don't think so?)

| Yes, every single class you take it necessary to a point. Perhaps not for you but not every class is there to please, for many they'll make careers out of studying plants or become historians when most of else wouldn't care for Washington and his Cherry tree.
I personally want to become an Archaeologist and that bores most people when mentioned. Personally not every class is for us, but till someone reaches College they'll just need to suck it up and take it. Trust me, I took it especially when I question if Gym is necessary, now that's a topic we need to get on if it isn't out there already.

| I think that school is an important part of life. I mean, you probably spend your first 24 years of life in school (Except when you're born till preschool, that doesn't count. And counting college.) Yes, they teach you a lot of junk that you probably don't need to know for your life. Yes, they make you square dance and all. But they still actually teach something that you need to know for the world. Even though, yes, I agree that they put in too much effort trying to teach us the "basics." But yes, a lot of training and everything else that you need for the "real" world is taught in school. Like a preparation to make a future for yourself.

| I think a lot of people are forgetting the main issue. School is not just a place for learning facts, numbers and such, but it is a place to learn to interact, socialise and experience different people and opinions.
I met my best mates at uni, and school. I learned about different cultures and customs.
I learned about all types of people. I ate food I had never eaten before and loved it.
I discovered new ways of thinking, not just facts.
My friends are now all over the world and I wouldn't have had that without school and uni.
Go forth and learn!
