| It could be a technical failure and crash landing is the only way to save themselves. Maybe they don't met the natives for a while, but find them to be comparable to us now?

| Technical failure, malufunction, same difference. And they don't really need to crash, but maybe are stranded until they can come up with an appropriate relpacement part to fix whatever got borked.
And that level of technological advancement of said natives sounds good.

I should also probably come up with my own alien species, shouldn't I? Now, are we in the same ship? Or are they single person fighters?

I'm thinking your character goes on mine's fighter for something (maybe a small trip?) and that crashes? It'll be big enough for roughly two people.
