LOL... what?!
No... not at all. People sell handmade items on Etsy. And there are no auctions. Most of the items are really well-made, and lots are gorgeous! I could shop on Etsy all day long lol
There are a lot of benefits to buying handmade - you support people that have essentially said "I'm stickin' it to the man and quitting my job to work on my dream". More often than not, you can find 'green' items, as many users try to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Most users also offer excellent customer service, as well as freebies when you purchase something. =)

Well there are eBay stores that consist wholly of Buy It Now! items. My main point was that it's things that aren't the norm on most people's shopping lists. Most people don't purchase hand-made earth-friendly items.
But I think you're right about her not getting my point.

You buy socks, don't you? And underwear? And probably all sorts of other clothing items...
Those are sold on Etsy. Jewelry is sold on Etsy (not crappy jewelry, either, I mean like high quality, 365 dollar and higher stuff). There are metalsmiths, children's toys... pins (like the ones they sell at Hot Topic, the little round ones)
I dunno, it seems like fairly normal stuff to me.
Granted, I have seen uterus earrings (which I ADORE lol!) and crocheted phalli... but it's all in good fun, really. :]
