I think it can be really hard sometimes on dA to tell what someone's gender is without looking at their profile because all you have is a 50x50 icon. I remember at least two to three times I someone was a guy and turned out to be a girl.

It's even worse IRL when you can't tell someone's gender, cause then you don't know how to address them. It happened to me in middle school, I tried to follow them around and see what bathroom they used, it didn't work. XD
