Zombie Take-Over

12. May. 2078.

You were at home, enjoying your Saturday morning chatting with friends, reading a book, watching tv when the new hit.

"Over 1000 people in Berlin were slaughtered last night when what scientists believe was a water borne illness struck homes all over the city. Even now people are being afflicted with this-" You don't even get to her the rest of what the news broadcaster is saying a series of screams interrupt her and the camera is knocked to the ground and the screen goes black.

In their cars, people are horrified to hear their favorite songs ripped from the air the death cries of their beloved radio stars. On The streets more shrieking and blood spilling as crazed people, DISEASED people are seen cannibalizing on friends, family and strangers while others run in terror. People on the other side of town watch the tvs in the store windows with shock and horror.

"THEY ARE ZOMBIES!" A frantic reporter screams into the camera as he reports from the inside of broom closet, the door being the only shield between him and death. "There's nothing else to call them! Stay home-!" A particular hard bang on the door startles him. "Don't let any one inside!"

The door blasted open, cracking the reporters scull open as dozens of blood slathered bodies grabbed for him. The camera man screams and you know no more.

Everyone begins to wonder...Is this the end?

Hal stumbled out of the mall, ripping off his cafeteria smock and dodging the madness that seemed to surround him. A gnarled hand reached out and grabbed his sleeve, pulling him backward into a fowl breathed thing tried to hold him still. With his free arm he smacked the creature in the nose and his sleeve ripped. Hal didn't dare look back, just ran as fast as he could to his apartment. He flew up the fire escape and climbed through his window into his small kitchen. It was dark and cool, a contrast to how hard his heart pounded in his chest, and the how hot his blood felt in his veins.

Hal sat their on the floor by his window panting until a crash inside the attatched room made him jump back to his feet and hold his breath.

The door to his room opened to reveal his German Shepherd, Cola. Hal slid back to his knees in relief ans Cola came over to lick his face. Hal pushed her away and tried to get his around what was going on. He didn't know how strong the doors were, or how zombie-proof the locks would be...much less the window...He didn't dare lock it though, it may be his only escape if they came in through the door...

Hal gathered together a few articles of clothing along with some fruit and jerky. He had to be prepared... Rummaging through his closet he found his backpack he hadn't used since college and and slipped his necessities inside. It was only when Cola barked that he thought to grab a few cans of dog food.

The pack was light, even when he tossed in a flashlight and batteries. His handy portable radio was in his pocket and a bottle of water stashed in the larger pocket of the back pack.

Hal held onto a metal baseball bat his older brother had left behind when he came to visit a month ago, tightening his grip at the slightest sound while Cola lay beside him, ears alert...

The TV was on in Clara's apartment, though the girl was just laying down on her bed, her arms crossed behind her head, trying to find something interesting to do today. Suddenly, a scream coming from the TV startled her, and she sat up to watch the blurry pictures. She grabbed the remote and tried switching channel, but most of the news channels were black out or had a little screen announcing they had technical difficulties.

Clara closed the TV and headed to the corner of the room, turning on a small radio. It was old, but still worked nicely. The voice of the animator was shaky on the other side of the speakers, but she clearly heard something about zombies and diseases. "What's that?" she said out loud, an doubtful look on her face. "A bad joke?" She let the radio on, wondering if they would give any more information, and headed to the windows to look outside.

Her apartment was on the 12th floor of the building, but she still could clearly see and hear people in the streets running in screaming. Some others caught her eyes, apparently not going with the flow of the crowd. Clara moved back form the windows, a strange thought crossing her mind. And if it was real, something whispered in her head. The girl shook her head, thinking it was foolish to believe in such thing as zombie. Still, she got closer to the radio and listened more carefully to what the news anchor was saying. Until the man let go a loud scream and the radio stopped working.

Suddenly, someone knocked at her door. Clara moved toward it, grabbing the baseball bat she was always leaving beside it. It was an old trick her friends had told her before, always having something to defend yourself with in case an unfriendly visitor knock at your door. She grabbed the handle firmly and turned the knob, having no way of seeing who was on the other side before the door was opened.

Something slammed into Hal's apartment door, and he curled into a ball, trying to fight the terror rising in his stomach. He'd always been the kind of kid who was waiting for a Zombie attack to happen, he'd watched 28 days later and its sequel, not to mention Dawn of the Dead...Hal'd even gone to see Zombieland when it came out.

Another crash against the door got Hal on his feet he timidly stepped toward the door while Cola stayed where she'd been. He jumped when the door shuddered as another blow was dealt to it.

Shaking and holding the metal bat over his head, Hal ripped the door open and brought his bat down hard- it made impact.

Hal's neighbor felt to the ground, twitching and seemingly normal. Hal covered his mouth and his eyes widened. He fell to the ground and watched in horror as blood seaped from the man's head. The twitches stopped...and Hal realized he'd just killed his neighbor...

It was Mr. Harris. He'd always made check-ins on Hal to make sure things were okay and he wasn't having trouble fitting in this enormous city. Tears choked him and he scrambled back.

There was a scrambling sound and something was running up the stairs. Heavy, sloppy footfalls...The teenage mother that lived downstairs...A dent in her skull and the whites of her eyes a sickening yellow...

They just stared at one another for a moment. Cola barked and Hal slammed the door with his feet just in time before the zombie lurched forward with a shriek. He desperately reached up and locked the door.

Clara opened the door a little, two strong security chain preventing it from opening more. "Who's there?" she asked, her voice shaking a bit more than she'd have wanted. "It's me, Mr. Jones," a strong voice said coming from the other side of the door. "I just wanted to see if you were ok," he added, apparently noticing the hesitation in her actions. "Yes, yes, I'm ok," the girl said, pushing the door closed and taking off the two chains before reopening it again. A tall black man in his mid-thirties stood in front of her. Her neighbour, apparently normal. It was one of the first people she had met in the city, and he had always been nice with her. She had even babysit his kids sometimes during the weekends they visit him.

The brunette sighed and walked away from the door, leaving him space to enter. The man stood in the doorway, shaking his head. "You've heard about the news?" he asked nervously. She shook her head in agreement. "We need to get out of here as soon as possible and find a safer place. Those old doors and windows won't stand a chance against the things," he said, poking the old door. He then grabbed her by the arm before she could do anything, and pulled her outside of the apartment. "Let's try to get as many people as we can," he said, knowing that some older people resided in the buildings, people who clearly couldn't escape by themselves. He walked down the hall, knocking on all the doors, but apparently there was no one except them on this floor. In the meantime, Clara had gotten bag into her apartment and grabbed an old school bag, rapidly throwing a set of extra clothes and some supplies in it.

"Let's hurry," Mr. Jones said, grabbing her once more and pulling her in the staircases. "Most people were probably at work, but there could still be a few. If we can get downstairs, we'll be able to use the intercom to call them." The man spoke quickly and ran down the stairs even faster. They didn't meet any zombie, or other living beings, on their road, but maybe those were simply busy somewhere else.

Once they got downstairs, they hurried to the entrance of the building. An intercom had been placed, enabling the visitors to call the person they were coming to see and preventing the intrusion of unwanted people. Unfortunately, the door had been broken. Clara stopped close to the door, thinking only a monster could have broke a solid reinforced glass door like that. Mr. Jones ran to the intercom panel and started pressing on all the button, which would send a signal and ring an alarm in all the apartments of the building. Hopefully, if there was someone else in the building, they would still be alive and well.

Hal looked out the window and glanced both ways, he could see a few houses on fire and he swallowed hard, eyes wet. "Cola!" He called and the dog ran forward. Hal picked her up, more like tried, and lifted her over the window onto the fire escape.

It took him a moment to climb out himself, a fearful glance at the door and a quick scan of the apartment to make sure he hadn't forgotten anything. Hal flinched at a violent that sounded outside the door and hopped out the window beside Cola who barked nervously.

Hal hugged her before running up the fire escape stairs to the top of the building; he didn't trust the streets.

Cola growled angrily behind him and Hal swung his head around. "COLA! COME NOW!"

A Zombie reached it's bloody hand up to grab at Cola but the dog snapped back to Hal on command. The furious creature screamed at them and shook the escape.

Hal shot up the stairs and climbed onto the roof, urging Cola to come with him. Once safely on the building, he ran to look for a good crossing point.

There was a hotel to the left, another apartment to the right...and some shops back to back with his own apartment building. Looking over the edge he saw that the shops were being torn apart, not by Zombies but humans. It made him shiver.

The other apartment's door hung off its hinges as though it had nearly been ripped off so he doubted it was any better than his own predicament.

The hotel though...it was too far away and too tall anyway...

Hal was stuck...He sat on the ledge with his face in his shaking hands...it was all just too much...

Carla looked as her neighbour punched the intercom keys, then stopped. They waited a little, a minute maybe, but got no answer. The man sworn a look at her. "Come! We can't wait here all day!" he said, grabbing her hand and pulling her in the street. He stopped soon though, horrified at the scene taking place in front of them. Fire everywhere, chaos, people running and screaming, and at some places, what appeared to be humans, but no longer were. The man shook his head, trying to regain his composure. "We need to get to a safe place. Any idea?" he asked her.

Clara shook her head. It was all so surreal, she almost felt like if she was in a dream. A really bad nightmare. "I guess the safest place would be where there's not too many people," she finally said. After all, the less people they were, the less the zombies would be attracted, since they would probably prefer to hunt where there was lots of preys, or so she thought. Plus, the lesser the number of people, the lesser the number of crazy people, which was an important point in the situation. "Or maybe we should try to escape from the city," added as the started to run down the street, fleeing from some terrifying noise coming from the buildings nearby.

"By now, all the roads must be jammed with people trying to escape," the black man said. "And I don't trust the subways." They ran for a while, until Clara could no longer take it. Her lungs were burning and she couldn't breath. She stopped and rested her back against a wall. Apparently, this sector was calmer, as the only sign of chaos came from humans pillaging stores. The zombies are not here yet, she thought, a bit frighten by the behaviour of the others.

"Come on! We can't stop now!" Jones said, stopping beside her. "I... can't... Need to... rest," Clara said, trying to get her breath back. Deeply, she regretted not paying more attention to her health and not being more active. "If you're not going to run, I'll leave you here!" the man said, first as some false threat you would say to a child to make him behave, but realizing the girl was really not able to go on, he shook his head. "Hope you'll be lucky, kid," he said, before he started to run in the other direction.

Clara tried to say something, but she couldn't. Partially because her breath was still heavy, partially because she knew the reaction of the other was normal in this situation. If it was a question of survival, who would care about people who couldn't survive on their own? No one, a small voice said in her head. At the same time, she felt like it meant she wouldn't be able to survive much longer. She wasn't an athlete, nor a fighter, and wouldn't stand a chance against strange creatures like the zombies. She sighed and started to walk slowly, trying to gather her thoughts and energy back. A nightmare, it must be a nightmare, she tried to convince herself as she went along.

The shaking of the fire escape finally stopped, the zombie must have decided that the prey wasn't worth the trouble. Hal looked out, across the the mess that NYC now was. A man running first caught his eye, and as he rounded a corner it was straight into a whole mob of zombies. Hal turned away, not wanting to watch to see if he lived or not...

Then a young woman stumbled around the block, she looked shaken and out of it. "HEY!" Hal shouted down at her. He didn't know why he did it, maybe it was the fear of being completely alone.

"HEY!" He called again.

Clara looked up, hearing someone shouting. She noticed a man on a roof nearby, apparently talking to her. She stopped in her way, wondering what he wanted. At the same time, a strange growl coming from the corner of the building reminded her of the zombies. She looked up once more, noticing a shaky fire escape. It was going up to the top of the building, but being stuck on a roof looked like a more pleasant idea than staying down there with zombies all around. She jumped in the fire escape and quickly climbed up, forgetting about her short breath or tired legs.

The last flight of stairs were closed, and Clara stopped in her track, caught in the middle. Some zombies were starting to gather down in the street, and she thought she could hear some foraging in the nearby apartment. "Open the stairs, please!" she said to the guy on the roof, hoping he could hear her and would be nice enough to obey. "PLEASE!" she said once more, hearing a roar coming from a window in her back.

Hal jumped down to the fire escape and released the ladder, locking it half way down so she could pull herself up but he could bring the ladder back more quickly.

Clara jumped and grabbed to the stairs as strongly as she could, then climbed up. Taking a look behind her, she noticed a zombie reaching through a window, apparently looking for an easy meal. She looked back in front of her and hurried to reach the roof.

"Thanks," she said to the guy who had probably just saved her life.

"No problem," Hal said shakily. He winced as the zombies below snarled and reached up, trying to grab hold of the fire escape. "We might be stuck up her for a little while. At least until people stop ripping the shops over there down and zombies abandon the apartment over there."

He gestured to both building and sat down beside Cola.

"I'm Hal," he reached a hand out to her.

"I'm Clara, please to meet you Hal," she said, sitting down beside him and shaking his hand. "And who's that?" she asked, pointing at the dog. For some reason, its presence was reassuring to her. As reassuring as having a dog with you when facing a invasion of zombies could be.
