Actually, you can tell if it's an alt before its flowers grow. The shade of yellow for its belly and eyes is more golden and the vines are a different shade of green.
 
The left one is an alt. The one on the right is yours.
I had two vines hatch about the same time when I got my alt. They were next to each other in my scroll, so I noticed the difference immediately.
I dislike cats. A lot. I'm also allergic to them. ._.

| I didn't hear anything about that. I got my alt just a couple weeks ago, so it would be very recent that they did that, though it wouldn't make sense, to me. The adult alt. has the colorings of that alt. hatchling, not the normal one. :\

I'd have to say no. :\
Alt. green (and black) eggs are darker, but it's hard to tell if you don't have them next to each other like that.
It's so hard to get an alt. I was desperate to get mine to mature.

| see I had an alt vine and it was about to mature but then the cave's server went down and I got fed up checking every day so when I came back like 3 days later it had died ;_;

| That's sad. I lost a batch when the server went down a while back. I think that's when I had my silver egg.
It's odd, most of the click-pet-sites that I'm on have been going through server changes. DragonCave moved recently and then Valenth earlier this week. It's nice having more reliable servers, but the wait time is so frustrating. I wasn't even aware of server changes until after they happened and I hadn't been able to access the site for a while. :\
