Hey! Welcome to Midorea! Most of question can be answered right here.

Gold comes from donating to the site. However, if you check the marketplace there are usually several users selling gold for silver. I think the current rate is 1000s for 10g. (Don't hold me to it though lol.) Sometimes the daily prize gives gold.

What do you mean by the site doesn't seem to go very far? You've got all your basics - a forum to chat with other players and gain silver and copper to spent on clothes and other items - plus you have the battle arena, which is by far my favorite feature!
