| Daniel was lucky this time, they had only just begun. He only suffered a bloody nose and some mild scratches and bruising. Nothing had been broken this time and the bruising would only turn yellow so it wasn't too bad. If he had been a minute later, he probably would have had a broken nose or cracked ribs or something more violent happen to him. He was barely conscious when the fighting ceased, not sure why it stopped as it never did before until they were done kicking his ass.
He didn't realize he'd been taken to the school nurse until he'd woken up and felt somewhat sick from being lightly beaten. He had one dissolve stitch in his lip that would go away when it was not needed. He groaned, sitting up and wondered what happened and why. He was ashamed to face his parents when he got home, knowing they'd do something stupid again trying to get him help.

| Rhadamanthys felt so fortunate to have no real appointments on the first day, and he went to make sure Daniel was alright. He knew that a talk with the parents would soon follow, and hopefully this would all clear up. While waiting for Daniel to come around, he wondered what would have happened if he had not interjected himself.Would they have stopped? Or would it have gotten worse? He shuddered at the thought.
He knew some humans were inherently cruel, but he would have never guessed that such cruelty could start at an age as young as this. He sighed sadly. Hopefully they would learn their lesson and choose the right path before it was too late.
As the figure in the infirmary bed stirred, Rhadamanthys jumped a little and looked down. He waited until the lad was fully conscious before saying anything. The two of sat in silence for a few minutes until Daniel looked like he was ready.
"Hey... are you feeling alright?"

| Daniel looked up from his bed, shaking his head lightly. "a little dizzy. Nothing I can't handle." He sat in silence again after that. He didn't want his parents being brought into this. He knew it was bound to happen though. He sighed, rolling onto his side. He was only lightly bruised so it only hurt in a couple places when he rolled onto his side. They had started to kick him before he blacked out a little from initial fear and stress.
"what happened?" He wondered why he wasn't so badly beaten this time around. Either way this probably wouldn't be the first time the councillor would see that happen. It was a near daily happening. Most of the time he would be cut with knives and end up with scratches all over his stomach. The worst thing was the four were never punished for their behaviour. Always getting more revenge on him later for telling.

| "He's handled this before?" Rhadamanthys thought, giving the boy a concerned look. This was more serious than he originally thought it was. He felt fortunate to have been there before it had gotten any worse.
"Well, you were jumped outside the counselor's office about ten minutes ago. I ran in to break it up as security was coming down the hall. You've been out cold since then." He sighed. In all his years on earth, he had seen very few blatant acts of cruelty upon one person. He had read about bullies in the magazines lying around various waiting rooms, but he had never witnessed them for himself until today.
Rhadamanthys cleared his throat. "Now Daniel. I'm going to ask you a few questions. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, please tell me. First off- does this happen on a regular basis?"

| Daniel looked down, nodding slowly. "Just about every day." He would answer the questions. He'd done this much before with the last councillor, though the councillor turned around and harassed him as well before. He was a bit hesitant to talk being afraid that it would happen again. He was bringing back the nervous vibes of frustration and fear of being pick on by anyone in the school. He was even sceptical of the nurse.
"Why does it seem like I've been through this before. The last councillor was a jerk. What makes you think I trust you to be anything less?" He spoke out, feeling a little cranky and still fearful. He wanted to prove he could fight back with words at the very least.

| Rhadamanthys sighed. "Well, I'm not the last counselor, am I?" He grinned. "This has been a daily occurrence, and nobody has paid it any attention?"He shook his head, that grin quickly turning into a frown. "That's terrible."
He cleared his throat, doing his best to sound professional and calm. "Now, you most likely know that we must call your parents and notify them of what happened today, whether it will do anything or not. School protocol and all that. We have the nurse on that now. Before they show up, could you give me the names of the assailants?"
The boy was awash with negative emotions, but the one that came off the strongest was mistrust. Mistrust of the figures in authority. With how he described his past experiences, Rhadamanthys could understand why. He had to make this boy feel as if he could have someone to trust.

| Daniel frowned as well, knowing his parents would baby him and also ridicule him because they've done stuff in the past to 'help' his situation. "telling them just usually makes things worse. That's why the four were after me again. Payback for telling that time last year." He inwardly cringed at the thought of what they would do to him now if they were trying to beat him worse than before. He hoped it didn't involve sharp objects.
He didn't know their names really since he always called them the four. He figured the best way was to pinpoint their school pictures on the site. "I don't know their names, just faces. They'd be on the site though."

| Rhadamanthys nodded quietly, listening to every word Daniel said. He frowned, figuring out exactly what to do with this information. "Unfortunately, school protocol dictates that we must notify your parents, no matter what that might do to the situation."
"On targeting these four, I'll go pull up the website so you can take a look at the student roster. We'll find these guys. Until then..." He sighed. "I would suggest staying out of school for a little bit until everything cools down. Just call in sick for a few days or something. I'll make sure that all of this gets taken care of."
Rhadamanthys had never seen a person so young so anxious in all his time. It started to make him feel a little nervous as well. And there was something about the boy that made him want to reach out and help. He couldn't exactly pinpoint what it was, but he really wanted to make sure that the bullying problem ended once and for all.

| Daniel sat quiet, waiting for the site to come up on the nurse's laptop. He then pinpointed the four as being the worst students in the school. They had the lowest marks and would probably only get to do fast food or gang jobs if they were lucky.
He didn't like the idea of missing school but figured it was better than being nearly killed by those boys. He would have to get a homework package sent home for those few days so he could catch up on work. "I'll need a homework package..." He said quietly, going to try and get out of the bed as he wasn't badly beaten up.

| "I will make sure that the homework is delivered to you." Rhadamanthys glanced at the computer as he said that, eyeing the boys on the screen. "So... these are the four. That one there looks particularly familiar." He pointed at one of the boys. He had buzzed black hair, hazel eyes, and a terrible acne problem. It was the one that he pulled off of Daniel. He looked over the names, writing them down on a piece of paper.
"Well, I have to get back to work now." He cleared his throat, pocketing the piece of paper with the names on it. "I'll get to taking these names to an administrator. If you need anything else..." he pulled out another piece of paper, writing something on it before handing it to Daniel. "This is my e-mail address. Feel free to contact me with any problems you may have."

| "mmm" Daniel said in recognition of the homework packs. He nodded when he was given the paper. He would probably add him to his email anyway. He just knew he was a burden to his parents. They were losing patience with him and this problem. They were running out of ideas too. It wasn't his fault but, he felt guilty that they'd had to pay so many medical bills for him when he'd get beaten badly.
"th-thanks." He mumbled as the councillor left the room. He sighed, lying down for a bit until his parents came to scold him and see if he was all right. They were at least relieved to see what there would be no need for medical unlike the last time with cracked ribs.

| Rhadamanthys walked into his office, sighing.
"You're putting too much time into that kid, Richard." Delores said as he walked by. "It'll just end up with him getting hurt more."
"I think the rest of you just aren't trying hard enough. This is a fixable problem. More drastic measures have to be taken."
Delores rolled her eyes. "Good luck with that. Some of those boys have some extremely powerful fathers." She resumed her typing as Rhadamanthys closed the door.
Maybe she was right. Maybe there wasn't much that he could do. Maybe things would go back to normal after punishments were dealt, and these boys would be back to bullying Daniel. Well, if that happened, Rhadamantys felt like he had to keep fighting.

| Daniel got out of the clinic after, still extremely guilty. He wouldn't look his parents' in the eyes. He went right to his room and collapsed onto his bed for the night after supper. He'd constantly overheard them. Disappointed in him after he caused them to lose lots of money by being bullied constantly. He knew they didn't have much money and that made him feel even worse. He spent most of his time crying and thinking over what he would do.
He packed up a backpack full of things he really needed, taking a duffel-bag with him. In the bag was some changes of clothes and all of his things he could not live without. His books, a few games and systems. If he needed to he'd sell those. He also had his necessities. He slipped out of his bedroom window around midnight, leaving no notes or traces. He did not want to be found by them.

| That evening, Rhadamanthys sat at home, flipping through the most recent issue of Parabola, reading one of the articles that happened to be about angels. It was amazing how much humans got right and wrong at the same time. He smiled, his hand involuntarily reaching behind his back and feeling the scars that were left there.
Something in him felt as if he could return one day, he just needed to prove himself. And he was hoping that what he was doing to help this kid would count as a deed that would give him a good word with those upstairs. He just had to stick with it...

| Daniel was exhausted, hauling around the duffel-bag as he stayed on some step in town. He was about half the time away from his house now, trying to get somewhere for the night. He didn't know which places were safe or not. He also did not want anything he owned to be stolen from under him if he slept. He walked all night, not sleeping at all. By the time he'd gotten to the inner part of town, he couldn't walk any farther, camping out in an alley. He lived way out in the sticks, so walking to town was never a good idea as it was long.
