Chapter one
Kris looked at Anna as if she had just walked out of a mental institution, and then again, so did I.. I have known the soft eyed Anna for eight years and yet today she seemed so lost to me. “Anna what are you talking about? This isn’t a game?” I asked her, brushing my White hair from my eyes. Anna looked up at me almost terrified.
“Kraven you have to believe me” she sobbed. “They are coming, I can feel it, they are like you, and we have to do something…” I tried not to laugh too much. Like me? I hadn’t been referred as one of ‘those kinds’ since I gave up my old life to join the Federals.
“Let’s just focus on practice, tomorrow we can’t because Kris has a basketball game…” I couldn’t help but glare at Kris. His blond hair; even his seductive smile. It pissed me off. Then again everything about Kris pissed me off…
“Don’t look at me like that, you know you want me” He said in his flirty voice. I shied away, I was still getting used to this, Flirty, side of Kris. But when I went to speak he made a gagging sound. “I wouldn’t date you in a hundred and eighty years Kraven” He laughed. So it’s all a joke to him, I thought as I looked over at Anna, she was looking longingly at Kris, to the same extent I had many years before…
“Anna, If you would like we could Call Hiyo here, you two can keep practicing” I offered, Anna shook her head and inched closer to Kris. They had begun dating about a week after I had told Kris I liked him, but Anna didn’t do it as a slap in the face. Kris asked her, so I can’t hate her for saying yes to dating a guy she liked. I brushed it off with a sigh and returned to my semi-perky mood. “Get a room you two, and you can’t use mine”
Kris glared at me, noting the personal attack to him. “Grow up Kraven, I’m sick of your shit” He growled as he gently grabbed Anna’s thin pallid wrist. “Come on Anna, I can help you with the chords at my place” He said as he looked over at Anna and grinned. Something about her blush and how she gave me that, ‘ha, I win’ smile irritated me yet again.
I waited until Anna and Kris were out the door, when I felt it was clear I ran into my room, I was tired, desperate for help suddenly ‘breath into me’ a song sang by my favorite band Red began to play on the television. Anna, my once best friend, was now dating the guy that I have liked for eight years…Slowly I laid down my mind was swarming with thoughts. Suddenly I heard something that caught my interest. ‘Hurry down to the Magic Valley mall to register for a chance to sign with a record Label! All you need to do is sing your heart out in the battle of the bands’ I picked up the phone dialing Kris’s number.
’Uhhh’Uh….What Kraven....’ From the sounds on the other end I knew what was going on... “Don’t let her bite to hard, you’re small, it’ll come off.” I teased, angrily. ‘What is wrong Kraven, jealous? I could fit you in sometime’ I felt happy that Kris was at his place now, because a sudden blush had crept up to my pallid face. “Fuck you Kris, I wanted to call about a battle of the bands that is coming up, do you think you could come with us to the mall tomorrow after your game to register?” There was silence on the other end except the sound of something clanging. ‘Sure-sure now I got to tend too my kitten’ and with that said, silence.
I felt heat rising, I felt the urge to run to him, slap him as hard as I could, yell at him, then hurt Anna for doing this to me. Yet I shook it off, Anna was my friend, no matter what.” Friends till the end…” I sighed as I played with the heart locket that she had made me for my birthday. Slowly I glanced over at my window. It was stormy outside, perfect weather for how I began to feel. I didn’t understand why I let him get to me so much, especially lately. Suddenly something chilled my spine. I stood up and walked to the door, a knock suddenly came to the door. I winced as I began to open the door. I was on my bed? Still holding the phone and Address to the battle of the bands when the door became trusted with fists. I groaned as I walked to the door, opening it slowly “Who is it?”
“Its me Drew” an averaged voice said. “I hear that you were going to be leaving soon for Battle of the bands, I though it would be fun to go with. Is that ok?”

“Y-Yeah sure, I have to pick up Kris and, my friend first so why not tag along with me” I said softly. I noted his flushed face. “It’s ok I don’t bite hard.” He gave a laugh to this, that was good, he still had a since of humor. As I got in the car, I noticed something had changed, and I knew it wasn’t going to help the battle of the bands issue.
“So how did you come to go to this school?” Drew asked me. I looked at the mirror as I adjusted my seat.
“It’s a long story…” I said weakly. “And I don’t want to bore you with the details.”
“Oh, really well I’m ok with details, and you never really told me about yourself. Please?” He sounded pathetic, almost too sad to really be a sad sound.
Yet with a heavy sigh “Okay, well you know my name obviously… I was born in a small Romanian town though... My parents moved us here when we were attacked by federals. Sadly I was only about ten when that happened. I started going here after that, it’s a lot better; I like small schools to bigger ones… though it’s easy to lose yourself in some people’s eyes.
“I never really understood why, we had to move, I guess my father got into some trouble while there.” She made a left turn to Kris’s house, now that she was on the street, she only had to go a few blocks, but instead she pulled to a curve “Well we shouldn’t be in that big of a hurry, anyway where was I?”
“You were saying on how your dad got in trouble in Romania” Drew reminded me.
“Oh, yeah .but like I said, it’s easy to get lost in some of the guys eyes here…one of my friends that I have had for a while, Anna, got me into the heavy metal scene. When I first saw her black hair and pierced face, and black clothing she had me… I wanted to learn what she did.
“I got what I wanted, and we decided to get a few guys together to start a band. Hiyo Mistuka and His brother Kris are both in our band, but it kind of cause’s conflict-”
“Cause you both like him?” Drew asked suddenly. I looked at the paved road. “I thought so…by the way, you said some guys eyes are easy to get lost in? I know one is Kris, but, who is the other?” I felt a blush run up to my face as I thought, you. But could I tell Drew that to his face in my current state…
“I haven’t found out yet, Kris is the only one who has caught my eye…” With that lie I pulled back onto the road, Kris lived only one more house down and Drew had gone quite.
As I pulled up to the house I could since the awkward miserable feeling suddenly dissipate. “Open the fucking door” I bellowed as I knocked heavily on the green colored door. The same noises I heard last night again filled my years.
“What!” Kris hissed as he opened the door. I stood there, not angry. I wasn’t anyway until I saw Anna come to the door with nothing on.
“You fucking pig” I growled, only so I could hear it... Kris stepped out of the house, closing the door. It concealed the nude Anna, so I was grateful about that.
“What’s wrong Kraven, jealous? Yet again?” I once again felt a growl play on my tongue. His voice hitting me like lightning bolts.
“Jealous? Of something that small?” My voice was a low growl, anger flooded over me. “If you hadn’t noticed Kris I don’t need you” guilt was an ongoing issue with me as it was. “Get Anna dressed she and I will go, you get ready to play catch”
“It’s called basket ball.” Kris glowered at Me. Something about it made me smirk.
“Catch,” My eyes played like darts moving around searching for a threat, any threat. I walked away, my white hair trailing behind me. A smirk spread across my lips. I stepped to the car, as I suddenly became panicked. I ran to the house throwing the door open. “Kris you didn’t!” My eyes searched the room desperately. Finally I got Anna’s small fragile form huddled in a corner, syringes lay discarded around her.

“What we’re stars, let us live a little.” He said with a dangerous glint in his eyes.
“This is your idea of fucking fame! Anna could get herself killed ass hole!” Anger was threatening to swallow me whole, my body shaking. My curled fists began to itch as I pictured myself clouting him in the jowl.
“Easy Kraven” He said as his hands traced down my breasts. With a growl I pushed him off of me.
“Do not touch me” I hissed, suddenly a man with white hair and black tips came descending down the stairs. My eyes recognized him right away. “Hiyo, what took you?”
“Oh, Kraven, got any cookies” That was one thing about Hiyo that scared me; he was a gentleman, one of a kind. Whenever faced with a cookie, however, he lost control.
“Sorry, I don’t have any cookies; can I get you one tonight for a favor?” I asked softly. Hiyo looked at me and then the frail Anna.
“Sure-sure tell me what you need me to do.” He said. I gave Kris a smug grin.
“We got to get Anna to a hospital, I don’t think we will be able to play tonight less we find another Guitarists” I sighed, letting out a sharp breath. Hiyo walked over to Anna picking her up gently in his arms. The sound she made disgusted me, it was a low groan. The drugs always put her in ecstasy, but there was always a consequence for it. Slowly I looked at the red faced Kris. “Be angry all you want, but I don’t see why she stayed in the first place.” My voice was cold and sharp. I turned my back to Kris, Hiyo and Anna almost to the car.
“Why did you leave?” He asked suddenly heavy hearted. I looked at him weakly my eyes glazed with sorrow.
“Because you fucked any girl that walked.” It was a harsh way of putting it yes. Right now, I had more to worry about. Suddenly I felt myself being pulled closer to him. “Kris let me go, it’s hard enough as it is for me ok” I let my eyes fall as his hands fell from around me, he was shaking. I looked back to his eyes. “See you at the game…” I turned again, this time no arm restrained me from walking away. It was preeminent this way. I didn’t want to look into his eyes again. I got in the car, Anna’s voice almost seemed normal. “Hiyo you give her those drug killers?” I asked.
“Yup, now I smell cookies, where are they?” I looked over at Drew who had a terrified look in his eyes, I mouthed for him to put the cookies in the glove box. With a click the glove box closed and the smell dissipated. “I know they’re here” Hiyo whined. I kept my eyes on the road, as the car began to slowly creep forward.
“Kraven” Anna whimpered softly.
“No one said I couldn’t.”
“I’m trying to help.”
“Well I don’t need it” I stood, looking away from him. Why was I being such a bitch? Was it because I felt connected to him? This Alexander.
Alexander stood, his hands tightened into fists. “Very well, if you think you can handle this on your own be my guest.” he threw me a cold look before he began to walk away. I pulled at the light green coat around my shoulders, his coat. I looked up to yell for him but already he was gone. I looked weakly at the ground. I felt someone fingers gently brush the back of my neck. With a gasp I turned to see who it was.
“Whoa, easy Kraven” Drew said as I stopped my hand from making contact with his face. “Are you ok?” He asked worriedly. “Seriously maybe we should get you some help?” he suggested. “Wait where did you get that coat? Why are you shaking? What’s going on?”
“Shut the fuck up Drew your annoying me” My voice was cold, hard. He looked at me a cross expression crossed his face.
“What the fuck? So you don’t need anyone?” Drew sounded hurt. Maybe I had gone a bit to far. “I’m going to get Hiyo and the others, the games over.” Drew grunted and walked back into the building. The air was now freezing, making my lungs burn.
I stood and walked to the car. When its white form came into view I froze. I felt as if someone was following me.
“Don’t be afraid.” I jumped at the sound of Angels tenor voice. “I wont hurt you yet.” My eyes were large, fearful. “You know, your funnier to torture than Anna was she screamed a lot, you just freeze, is that why you’re shaking? Terror?”
“Stay away” I growled. “You signed us up why are you stalking us.”
Angel grinned, “stalking you. You are the only one of interest to me.” He looked back at a group of giggling friends, my giggling friends. “See you at the audition.” And with that he was gone.
“Kraven, you look like Anna did yesterday, what’s going on?” I couldn’t say anything; I only knelt down to pick up the discarded keys to the car that I had dropped. “Kraven answer me Damnit!” I ignored Kris; it was easier to do than usual. Something made me turn around, hatred tearing up my eyes as I pressed my lips to Kris’s. I could see Anna Fuming in the background
Hey Anna you hanging in there?” I asked my eyes not moving from the road. “Don’t do that shit anymore ok, it’s going to ruin your life”
“I know-” Her voice was a soft slur “I won’t do it again.” I looked at her through the corner of my eye, although she promised she would not shoot up anymore, I knew it was an empty promise, the drugs talking. It was a long drive; there were a few hours of silence. I knew that if we didn’t have to take Anna to the hospital it would not have taken us as long.
We were there now, and the lines were almost done. I didn’t like the fact that we would be the last ones to sign up usually the last ones to sign up were the first on stage. “Name of the band and put your band members here” The requite stated. I picked up the pin. Band: Introspective Bleeding Hearts, Lead: Hiyo Mistuka, Bassist: Kraven Amberlene, Guitarist: Anna Marie, Drummer: Kris Mistuka. I sighed as I went over the list once more and handed it to the requite, he brushed his black hair from his blue eyes and gave a charming smile. “Hoping to see you there, I’m Angel” He said as he stretched his hand out. Shyly I shook his hand.
“I’m Kraven” I said as we drew our hands apart.
“So you’re a bassist? I am as well, but not like it’s anything important now.” I looked at him bemused when it suddenly hit me.
“You were Bassist for the Demons Next Door” My voice was a bit higher than usual, I was just glad Drew, Anna, and Hiyo were at a separate store, it was just me in Hottopic talking to the bassist of the biggest band of the era.
“Yeah you know us?” Angel asked me. My eyes lit up.
“Know you, I have almost all of your albums, you were my big inspiration.” I said then heard a grunt behind me.
“Anna is looking a bit worried” It was Drew behind me. I looked back at the three of them, Anna looking at the floor. “She said that Kris’s game starts in an hour if we leave now we might be able to make it there ten minuets late.” I looked back at Angel.
“Sorry we have to go.” I turned to my friends and we left, I suddenly felt a weak feeling cross over my heart. “Ok guys lets hurry.” I said as we got back into the car.
“Lets go” That was the last thing that was said on the drive back when Drew finally broke the silence. “Kraven, you passed the school” I suddenly stomped on the break and turned into the church parking lot.
“Ok let’s walk to the gym” It wasn’t far from the gym, actually it was right by the school. It was a well kept church, though I had never seen inside. A shiver went down my back as I locked the car doors.
I felt as if someone was watching me, although when I looked back no one was there. Anna and Hiyo were already at the gym, leaving a gap of the gym and I open. Never had I felt so vulnerable, and my body couldn’t move for a strange reason. My eyes never caught sight of anyone following me, and it seemed that I was in the clear, but my nerves were eating away at me. I began to walk to the Gym, my heart pounding in my throat. It wasn’t a throbbing feeling, more of an ache. The handle to the gym was cold; I pulled my hand away with a gasp. It was at least ninety-eight degrees out, but the handle had to be thirty below zero?
“Kraven what the hell is taking you come on” Drew said as he walked up behind me and opened the door. I had completely forgotten that Drew was with us. He looked at my staggered expression. “Hey are you ok?” His voice was soft, as if I belonged to an- Anna, I understood why Anna had looked so frazzled. When Anna said ‘like you’ she didn’t mean junky, she meant vampire. I didn’t even know any vampires though and I sure wasn’t one.
“Oh, sorry, lets go” I took the lead but everything seemed colder now. I swore I could see my breath. We sat down as soon as Kris jumped for the shot, suddenly he froze in the jump. Terrified I turned to Drew, he had an annoyed expression on his face, but was too unmoving. I looked quickly for Hiyo and Anna, who were frozen in a standing cheer.
“A beautiful work of art isn’t it?” Angel asked from behind me. I didn’t turn to face him why was I the only one who could move?
I felt Angel’s lips brush against my neck. I twisted around to face him, suddenly the cheers of the crowd returned Kris’s ball went through the hoop. An empty seat remained behind me, where had Angel gone?
“Kraven are you ok?” Drew asked looking worriedly at me.
I slightly pulled at my shirt and grunted. “I’m fine.”
I sat down I felt like my body should have turned into an ice sculpture, I began to shake.
Drew could see it, I could tell by the worried look on his face.
I made my way down the old brown bleachers avoiding people. I didn’t look back at Drew or Anna; they would figure I had to go out for a breather.
The air was getting colder and fast, I looked at my hands, which were beginning to turn blue. “Cold?” A tenor voice asked. I cocked my head to the side to examine the man who had spoken to me. He had red hair and green eyes and was tall. “Here” He shifted out of his lime green coat and handed it to me, “It isn’t the warmest thing but…” He gave a soft smile. Could he feel the cold air as well as I could?
“Thank-thank you,” I said mutely. I looked weakly at him, “who are you anyway?”
“Oh my name is Alexander, I’m a-well,” He froze for a second, “Vampire slayer if you believe in that stuff.” I nodded my head softly.
“I do believe in that stuff,” I said weakly, almost to myself. He looked at me; though he was silent his expression was worth a thousand words.
I froze as I looked at Alexander. A light blush caressed my cheeks. He looked toward me; fear forced my gaze to the cold road. “You know his name right,” He asked weakly.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about” I said, Alexander let out a heavy sigh as he brushed his slender fingers through his red hair.
“You’re lying.”
