A friend of my dads recently lost his wife and is now in the hospital.
He is depressed and I want to draw him something simple but cheerful.
what should I draw, and what kind of colors should it have on it?

I agree with Ren, but bright colors may be too much.
I'd stick with something simple, not too cheerful since it's only natural to grieve and you don't want to blind sight him with something COMPLETELY OPPOSITE to what he is feeling. Think of a postcard or Hallmark letter. What would they make for a situation like this?
Think beautifu and serene. Maybe even a got dang rainbow in the sky or something. Like hope after a storm? Personally, I'd draw something like a nice nature scene with a tree AND a rainbow in the background with a nice comforting quote or saying or a note you write yourself [which will probably have more meaning].
Sorry for his loss. ):

Birds are always a winner; namely doves, at that. Hm, you could draw a picture with a bird in some sort of tree, with a sunrise/sunset in the background, in order to give it a nice and calm-like feeling. =)
