.: RULES :.

  1. Follow the rules and terms of service of Midorea.
Midorea is a pretty cool place, and we don't have that many rules, so it would be nicer for everyone if you took a few minutes to read them and if you followed them. Just saying. Wink

  2. Be respectful.

  3. Do not beg!

  4. Please read each service's information completely before asking questions.
Although, if something is missing or isn't clear enough, please tell me so I can make the thread better.

  5. More rules can be added at any time if necessary.

    .: CHARITY :.

The NHC charity is here to help new members start their journey by giving them a few items and some money. We also gather older items to give them back to the community through events and raffles.

    Funds: (updated January 5th, 2013)
    26000+ silver
    60 gold
    0 copper
    Inventory

    Requests:
Every new member will be allowed to request one newcomer's gift package. A member needs to be less than one month old to be eligible to this offer, although an older member could be allowed to get a gift package if the administration of the NHC judges it acceptable. Please do not request multiple gifts or use a mule account to get more gifts. All the funds of the NHC comes from donations of older members, and if they all get used up, there will be nothing left to give to new members.

From now on, you will also need to have made at least 10 posts on Midorea to get a gift. This rule is mostly there to prevent people from requesting a gift upon arrival and disappearing 5 minutes later.

To request your gift, simply post in this thread.

    Newcomer's gift package content:
    - 250 silver
    - 1 volleyball
    - 5 weak HP potions

, or something judged equivalent by whoever is in charge at that time. For example, a small amount of silver can be added to compensate some modifications to the site (that maybe could affect the items sent), or the weapon can be replaced with another one. Also, small items - for example, past mystery box items - can be added at random and following availability. A newbie gift is always final and chosen solely by the person in charge, meaning you can't ask for specific items - replacement or simply new ones - and things like that.

    Donations:
The NHC is always gathering items, either to give them back directly to new members or to use them as prizes in special events. We accept anything, items or currency. Just send your donations to me. If you'd like to trade because your sending lots of items or something, please contact Maeve before; otherwise you could wait a while for an answer.

Thanks to all the people who donated previously! Bouncy Heart

    .: Discovering Midorea :.
Part 1 - Creating your character

    Topics covered here:
    - The character sheet
    - The character creation page
      - Stats
      - Races
      - Elements
      - Alignments
      - Classes
    - Tips
    - Useful links

So, the first thing you'll need to do after you've joined Midorea is to create your character. Your character is basically like a RPG character. It will be used to fight in the battle system, but it is also required to be able to make an avatar and buy items.

First, you'll need to access your character sheet. If you go to the top of the page, behind the Midorea logo, you'll see a menu with links to the most used parts of the site. To get to your character sheet, simply click the little sword icon.

Normally, if you had a character, you'd see a little spreadsheet summarizing your character. If you haven't made one yet, it will show your the "character creation" page instead. For now, we'll assume that you don't have a character and that you want to create one, and thus, that you are on the character creation page.

The page is divided in three section. The top one shows the name of your character and its biography. The name of your character is automatically set to be the same as your account name. You can't change it, although you can ask the admins if you want to change your account name. The biography part is optional, but you can write something there if you want. You'll be also able to modify it later.

Now, the section below is the most important part since it will influence how well your character does later on. The left part shows the characteristics, or "stats" as they are often called. Here's a small summary of what each stat does:

    NHC wrote:
Strength influences how hard your weapon hits
Dexterity influences your chances of hitting your opponent
    Constitution influences your (physical) defense
Intelligence influences how hard your spell hits
    Wisdom influences your (magical) defense
Charm influences your relations with NPC and other things - unused

Below the list of your stats, you'll find the "reroll" button. Just click it until you are satisfied with your stats (see the "Tips" section below for more info).

On the right side, you'll find three drop-down menus with various information. The first thing you'll need to select is a tribe. Tribes are like the races of Midorea, and each tribe comes with specific stats modifier. A tribe does not affect the look of your avatar! It just affects your stats. You can click the little "information about this race" link under the menu to find information about the selected tribe.

Elements work a bit like the tribes, but instead of modifying your stats, they will change your skills. Skills are used to perform various actions, or to determined the success of the said actions, but the only one that is currently used is forging. It is believed that your element will also affect your defense against certain attacks, although this would require further researches.

The last thing you need to select is your alignment. This is more of an RPG-type of feature and won't really change anything, although you may not be able to use certain weapons if your alignment doesn't match their requirement.

Once you are satisfied of your character, click the "continue" button at the bottom of the page. You will be directed to the class selection page. Depending of the stats you picked on the previous page, various classes will be available for your character. You can compare the different stats of each class and choose the one you prefer. Once you made your choice, click the "finish" button and voilą! You have a character.

You will automatically be redirected to the standard character sheet, the one you'll see if you click the character link at the top of the page. It contains all the info we've talked about previously, as well as a small battle statistics board.

If you ever get tired of your character, you can always delete it and make a new one. Simply click the "delete current character" button on your character sheet and you'll be able to make a new one. Deleting your character will delete everything about that character (experiences, stats, etc.), but it will not delete your money or the items in your inventory.

    Tips:
  • Have an idea of what you want to make with your character before you start building it.
First, will you use the battle system? Some quests (and items) are only accessible by playing with the battle system. However, if you don't want to fight, chances are you can also find them on the marketplace. If you don't plan on fighting much, then you don't need to worry when creating your character and can simply pick the things you like the most, maybe try to recreate an OC of yours or something like that.
Second, how will you fight? Do you want to use weapons or spells? As mentioned before, strength influences weapons efficiency while intelligence affects spells. This is partially a question of taste, but note that the battle system isn't really magic-user friendly, so if you're just starting, you're probably better with a weapon user.

  • Pick good stats!
If you plan on fighting, you should try to get the best stats possible, in other words get as close to 20 in all categories. Although, to make things faster, you can also decide not to care about certain stats. For example, if you want to fight with a weapon, you won't really need intelligence, so you can forget that one. Forget charm too. Although it sounds interesting, it isn't used currently because it caused problems with the shops, so the system will automatically bring it back to 0 once you're done. Which means you only need to care about the four other stats. Try to get 15+ in most of them.

  • Pick a good tribe!
Your tribe will influences your stats, so try to pick one that adds to the useful stats.

  • Element matters less.
Your element will mostly affect your skills. If you plan on fighting, you'll eventually have to repair your weapon, so the forging skill could come in handy. However, your skills will also raise when you use them, so even if you start with a lower forging skill, you'll eventually get better.

  • About classes...
Classes will influence how your character evolves. You can select what you prefer. You will also be able to change it later on by going to the training grounds. Go to your character sheet, then, at the top of the page, select town place, then training ground. Training a skill or characteristic are pretty useless since they costs so much, but the two last options are interesting. "Promotion" will be used when your character has gathered enough experiences in a certain class to change into a better one, while the "change class" option can be used at any time and will give access to basic classes. It will costs you some money though, but it's sometimes better than just starting over with a completely new character.

Part 2 - The forums and how they work

    Topics covered here:
    - The forums
      - General overview
      - How to make a thread
      - Currency
    - Tips
    - Useful links

So, now that you've joined Midorea and that you have a character, the next step is to introduce yourself and learn more about the community. We'll now discussed the forums and all the related topics.

First, since you are reading this thread, I'm guessing you already found your way to the City Entrance. The City Entrance is Mido's introduction forum. It hosts newcomers threads, and threads that were made to help them get around like the NHC. If you haven't already, you can go ahead and make yourself an intro thread. Don't be shy! Just remember to follow the rules of the site. By the way, since I don't think I have mentionned it before, the rules and other general information can be found in a little link bar at the complete top (and bottom) of each page.

To create a thread, just click the "New topic" button at the top of a forum. If you're inside a thread, it will be beside the "Reply" button. Both will give you access to a similar page. The main difference is that the new topic will also shows a poll creation panel at the bottom, and that you don't need to add a subject line if you're only replying. "Subject" is basically the title, so if you put one, it will create a new topic, even if you clicked the reply button.

You then have access to a series of coding option for your post. Clicking on them without having some text selected will add the opening code to your post the first time you click, and the ending code the second time. If you have some text selected, the code will be applied to it. The big box below is where you put your text. You then have some options to enable/disable stuff, and the poll section. The "preview" button will give you an view of what your text will look like, and the "submit" button will officially post your message.

If you are not satisfied with your post and feel the need to change it, you will find an edit button above the post bubble, along with a "quote" and "delete/X" option. Clicking on edit will bring you back to a normal post form with all your text and coding and things. Just change what you need and re-submit it, and voilą! Your post has been changed. Clicking the quote button will basically do the same as clicking on reply, but with the text you wanted to quote already there and coded. The delete button will only show if no post has been made after yours. If it is not there but you still want to remove something, just contact a moderator. Don't worry about asking us things, we're here for that. Wink

Upon posting something, you'll be brought to a page telling you if your attempt to post was successful (generally there's no problem unless you're trying to post too quickly after another post), and what you earned from that post. Posting in the forums on Midorea will give you copper or silver. Copper is gained from posting the "Fun&Games", "Private Role-playing" and "The Storybook" forums. It can be used to buy items from the Newbie Store, or you can exchange it for silver. To exchange it, click on "Account" in the panel beside your avatar at the top of the page, then on "exchange" under the list of the currency you have. Silver is earned by posting in the other forums or by battling monsters in the battle system. It is used in the other shops of Midorea and is the main currency of the site.

You can also find gold in the currency list. Gold is our donation currency, so it is earned mainly by donating real money to the site. You can also sometimes get some from contests, or in the daily gifts. Gold is used to buy monthly and special items from the Temple of Gold. Midorea also use special currency during events (candies, crystals, shards, etc.). They are used to buy event items and such. Outside events, whatever surplus you have can be exchange for silver, just like you did with copper.

So, back to the forums. We won't talk about all of them now, since it'd be long and probably not that useful. The two you should probably know about at first are the Information Kiosk, where you can ask questions and get answers, and the Lounge, our hangout forum. You can explore the others based on your interest. At the top of each forum, you'll find the announcement and stickied threads. They often contains the rules and other useful information, so they should be the first things you check when entering a new section.

    Tips:
  • If you ever need a link for a specific post, you can find it by hovering/clicking on the little white page (or green for a new post) that's at the left of the posting date above a post bubble. It will reload the page but starting at the post you clicked on, and you can then just copy/paste the address.

    Part 3 - Woot shopping!

    - The Avatar page
    - The Shops
      - General overview
      - How to buy items
    - MAD, our dream avatar creator
    - Tips
    - Useful links

Midorea is an avatar community, and part of the fun of an avatar community is to make an avatar. If you've explored the forums, you've probably noticed all the nice characters the other users have made, and you probably want to make one of your own. You can change your avatar by clicking the "avatar" link in the top panel (between "character" and "inventory").

On the avatar page, you will see a picture of your current avatar on the left, below the "save" and "unequip all" option. On the right, you will find the items you can equip, separated in layers. Basically, the first layers are on top, the last ones are at the back of the image. When you are satisfied of your look, just click the "save" button. If changes don't show up after that, press f5/ refresh your page.

Obviously, if you're new around, you won't have much choices in terms of equipable items. Outside the basic options like the color of your skin, gender, etc., you will be able to equip some basic underwear and some loincloths. But we can change that...

At the top of the page, you've probably noticed the "Shops" icon. By clicking it, you'll access the Market Square, or the place where the shops are. Midorea has a bunch of shops containing a variety of items. Listing them all would be long, but just click a shop and explore it to see what is available. Some items will have a little icon in their right corner (ex: sword). That means they can be used in battle. Hover over that icon to see the restrictions for that items (restrictions will forbid you from using an item in battle). To buy an item, click the little arrow under it to select the number you want, and the little cart icon to buy them.

Now, maybe you'd like to see what the items you want to buy will look like prior to buying them. This is where MAD comes. MAD is our dream avatar creator. It can be a bit of trouble to fight, but just click here (and bookmark it if you want). It works pretty much like the avatar page, except you can save what you've made. If you want to keep a picture, you'll need to take a screenshot of your screen (prt sc. on your keyboard) and paste it in some picture software (MS Paint). MAD is being worked on at the moment, so it's not the prettiest thing, but at least it will give you an idea of what you are buying.

    Tips:
  • F vs. M In the avatar page, items and poses for female avatars are marked with a little F, while the ones for male avatars have a little M. So, if you prefer one gender for your avatar, you just have to pick the right items (there's no option in your account or similar thing to change your gender). Items with no indication can fit both gender.

    .: Discovering Midorea :.
Part 4 - Fighting and related topics

    Topics covered here:
    - The Battle Arena
      - General overview
      - Monster battles
      - Zones
      - PvP battles
    - Tips
    - Useful links

The Battle Arena (or battle system) is one of the key features of Midorea. As the names implies, it is a special place where you (your character) will fight monsters or other players. You don't have to use it if you don't like, but it's still a good idea to know how things work in case you need it someday. To access the Battle Arena, simply click the "Head to Battle Arena" link, found in the top right corner of each page.

On the page that shows up, you'll see the Battle Community page. This is basically just a chat, along with a list of the characters that are online at that time. You can chat there if you want, learn to know other players and all. Just don't use < and >, it messes up with the coding and sorta deletes things. Also, the chat resets sometimes (once a day?), so if you want to keep track of things that are said there, you'd better copy them somewhere.

Above the chat section, you'll find two link bars. The top one allows you to navigate between different parts of the site (Character Sheet, Town Place, Market Square, Battle Arena (you're here now), My Control Panel). We will talk more about each of those sections in other parts of this tutorial, but you can check them out if you haven't already.

The bottom bar allows you to pick which part of the battle system you want to explore. For now, we'll go to the monster battles section. Upon clicking the link, you'll be taken to a page where you can put some equipment on. If you have items that fit into the different categories shown (armor, shield, helm, glove, amulet and ring), they will show in the drop-down menus. You can equip them by selecting them. Note that they will be equipped by your battle character, not by your avatar, so they won't show up on your character picture.

In the drop-down menus, you'll find some indications concerning the items you have: the name, power and duration. Power basically shows how efficient something is. For an armor (and other protections), that "power" will give you a defense bonus. The duration tells you how long an item will last. Each time you use an item, its duration goes down. When it reaches 0, the item is broken and disappears from the system. So, if you have an armor you like a lot, be careful not to use it too much.

Once you are ready, click the "Begin battle" button at the bottom of the page. You will enter the real battle arena. The battle system is a text-based fighting system, and it looks like some old-style RPG. At the top, you'll find the name of your opponent (you vs. monster). On the left, you'll see your avatar and statistics, and the equivalent fields on the right for the monster. Remember to keep an eye on the HP (or health points) and MP (or magical points) bars, since they are pretty much the most important things in a battle. If the monster runs out of HP, you win. If you run out of HP, the monster wins. MP is used by certain items (mostly by spells, but also by some special weapons). If you don't have enough MP left, you won't be able to use those items.

Under those sections, there'll be an historic of the fight (it's usually empty when you come in, unless the monster had some initiative and attacked you first). And, at the bottom of the page, you'll find the "Actions" panel. The "Actions" section contains everything you can do during a fight. The first menu allows you to pick a weapon. The middle menu is for magic items, such as spells. The last menu regroups your potions. You can use the various items by selecting them and clicking the corresponding button (found at the right).

Like we discussed before with the defense equipment, the items you can use have power and duration indications. The power of a weapon or spell will determine how strong your attack is, while the potions' power will tell you by how much you'll be healed, or your MP will be restored, or whatever it is supposed to do. The duration shows you how many time you can use an item. However, the battle system was programmed to not show items with 1 duration left, so you can't use them (by mistake) and destroy them. That means that even if a potion or spell has 2 duration points, it can only be used once. After that, you'll still find them inside your inventory, but they can't be used. Weapons work just the same, but you can repair them at the forge after and you'll be able to re-use them. We'll talk more about repairing items and healing later.

The two last options you can use in a fight are found at the bottom of the actions panel. First, you can defend. Defending will make it harder for a monster to hit you, but it won't do anything else. The last option is to flee, which can be quite useful if you get in troubles.

The Midorea's battle system is pretty repetitive after that. You just click the best option until you win, or until you die. When the fight ends, you will get to an information page that summarizes what happened. There you'll find your rewards and information about your character's health, or a message saying you successfully fled from the fight, or one saying you died. You can then choose to fight again, or to return to your character sheet. Remember that a lot of things can't be done if you are in a fight, like trading or buying new items, so try to finish them as quickly as you can.

In some occasions, when you try to fight monsters, a message will appear saying that the system didn't find any monster corresponding to your level in the zone where you are. "Zones" are basically specific places associated with certain properties (monsters, NPCs, etc.). You can change zone by going to the "Explore" section (found at the top of the page, between the "Forum" and "Shops" links). If you've played with it before, your character could be in a zone where there are no monsters of your level or below. Simply click on the links in the "Explore" section until you get back to a zone where you can find monsters. The Great Gated City is generally a good place to start (it is the center of Midorea, and the place where you start normally). Once you get used to the battle system, you can explore more zones and see if you can find NPCs and if they have quests for you.

Midorea's battle arena also allows you to fight another player, often refer to has PvP (player vs. player). If you go back to the entrance of the battle arena and click the "PvP battles" link, you'll be brought to a page summarizing your previous fights and allowing you to challenge other users or to answer challenges. PvP battles won't give you any reward, outside bragging rights, so they are rarely used.

    Tips:
  • Don't forget your weapons! It's always a good idea to check your inventory before you start fighting, just to make sure you have all the items you'll need.

  • Don't be afraid! The battle system can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you are not used to this kind of system. Don't worry, just take your time, and ask questions if you need. Once you know how it works, it can be a nice way to pass time and make silver.

  • Get out of your fight. As mentioned above, some actions can't be done if you are in a fight. It can be a bit annoying, for you and for users who are trying to interact with you, so don't forget to end your fight you begin as quickly as you can.

  • Fleeing isn't bad! If you know you are not going to win a fight, don't feel bad about fleeing. Sure, it's not the prettiest stats, but it'll cost you less than having to resurrect your character...

  • Death isn't the end. You can always resurrect your character. You'll loose some money and experience, but nothing you can't get back with a few fights.
