Welcome to The Underground

"The Underground is a world that exists outside the bounds of the normal, everyday world of which we are all a part. In this fantastic place there exists a world of magic and myth. All the things you dreamed of when you were a child, and all the things that scared you in the night, exist in this place, accessible to only those in the know, or those who stumble into it. Accessed through special tunnels and doorways through out the world, the vast network of tunnels and underground cities has gone unnoticed by the surface world for thousands of years.

It's always been there, a whole parallel world existing in the shadows of those on the surface. Just remember, when the urge to enter calls to you, anything can happen in the world below."

We now have an OOC thread, which you can find Here.

No Bios will be needed to play here. You can simply come in and start role playing as whatever you like. However, a proper introductory post is asked for, and each post must have a minimum of 3-4 sentences.

:Rules:
Follow T.O.S for Midorea, keep it PG-13

:Set-Up:

The Underground is a free form role play that takes place in the present day. That means the year is 2010, the current month is whichever month it is right now, and the technology is at the current standards, although no surface technology will work with in the Underground. The Underground itself is a dark 'shadow' world, mirroring and, in some cases mocking, the surface world. It's a pocket, or parallel universe, accessible through magical doors and tunnels, often found down back alleys, under bridges and in basements - places where the sun doesn't get to easily. The doors move, as the place itself is in constant motion in contrast to the normal/surface world, which is solid and still. The door you came in through may not go back to the same place in the surface world, if you wait to long to return. Additionally, the door itself may simply vanish and reappear somewhere completely different.

In the underground, all manner of beasts and mythical creatures exist, including some not yet thought up by the imaginations of man. Magic and chaos are a large part of the Underground world. Everything from elves to dragons, vampires to nymphs, exist down below, mingling with those humans who are either brave enough to wander in freely, or unlucky enough to fall in.

The Undergrounders (or Lurkers) refer to those who live solely on the surface, unaware of their existence, as Surface Walkers. They tend to view them with disdain because they are, by choice, blind, deaf and dumb to the Underground. Most regular humans can't handle the knowledge that there exists such a place, and what exists with in it, so they unconciously ignore/deny it. Some, who are more sensitive to it, or more aware, notice the oddities that the Underworld creates, the ripples in 'reality' that follow in its wake, and often see things as they are, though they rarely understand what it is they see. These are usually the people who believed in monsters and fantastic beasts as a child, and refused to lose that belief as an adult.

The Underworld's structure is that of a mass of dark, twisting underground tunnels leading to various twisted, cramped cities. The tunnels are all the same, and it's easy to get lost in them because of that. All of them are made of dark, almost black, stone with veins of white seaming the walls that glow faintly - just enough to see by. The cities are set deep into bowls in the earth, huge pockets of space where multiple tunnels meet up.

The largest city in the Underground is called Urus, and is the main setting in which our role play will take place. Urus is home to the Dark Spire, home of The Duchess, ruler of the Underground. Located at the nexus of the largest tunnels in the Underground, Urus' Dark Spire is visible as a sharp, twisted, jutting black castle formed out of the same black stone material of the caves and tunnels themselves, literally seamlessly flowing out of the earth to pierce the air. The distinctive spiked edifice is the very first visible part of the city from any of the tunnel openings. The city itself rests lower than the tunnel openings, set into a bowl like indentation in the ground. The seamed and crumbling outer edges, lined with twisting, narrow and dangerous staircases, make up the outer walls. Beyond that, the city is made up of tightly clustered buildings, large and small, with cobbled roads winding in and around them, the Spire sitting atop it's highest point like a menacing crown.

The Feral Dog Tavern and Inn, a large stone building built to house travelers and run by an intimidating, demonic looking man named Nemeon rests near the edges of the city, near the merchant's district where traders from all over the Underground come to sell rare and varied wares. They say you can get anything in the black markets of Urus - from sex slaves to fine pottery.

You, as a player, may be anything or anyone you want to be. Just remember, our role play takes place in the Underground and not the surface world, though parts of your role play may take part there. If you would like, you may post the following bio skeleton filled out about your character in your first post, but you don't need to, it's just to give us a short idea of who you are and what you're doing here.

:NPCs:

For those that don't know, an NPC is short for Non Player Character. They're any person who isn't being played by an actual character, but is still present in the story. For example, all the people of the city are NPCs -so if you're in the market place in Urus at high noon, where there would be a steady flow of traffic, all of those people are NPCs. You can interact with and use them at will to colour your role play. NPCs are also applied to all pets your character may have - those NPCs are yours specifically.

Another way to think of them is in terms of an RPG game, like final fantasy, WoW or LotRO - the shop keepers and people who give you quests are NPCs. The only NPCs you may not roleplay/use yourself are those in the following list, these will be played by Inamorata, unless someone more suited is found.

The Duchess - The mysterious and iron willed ruler of the Underground. She's rarely seen outside of the Dark Spire in the heart of Urus, though rumour has it she is terrifyingly beautiful and cruel when angered. She must be powerful, to be able to hold command of the entire Underground, riding the chaos that permeates it.

Nemeon - The owner and bartender of the Taver/Inn in Urus. He's a large, stocky, well muscled cyclops. Don't let the lack of an extra eye fool you, he only needs one to beat you with. He's usually stoic and silent, speaking in one word sentences or grunts, rather than bothering to speak fully. He takes not nonsense and is hell in a fight - the Tavern is neutral ground, which is mutually respected because of Nemeon. Only the stupid fight there.

The Shadow - This is a mysterious shadow being that lurks deep with-in the tunnels. It's presence is used as a means of scaring young children away from wandering too far from the Cities of the Underground - like the Boogeyman, only The Shadow exists. It's origins and purpose is unknown, but it has been said that it is a neutral being - helping and causing havok where it pleases. It has no gender, but is able to speak. The Duchess knows of it, but says little about it. Some rumours suggest that The Shadow was crated by her as a spy and weapon - as she too has been around for as long as anyone can remember.

The Black Wolf - This is the frightening knight of the Duchess. He commands the Underground's only form of 'police', The Black Guard. The Wolf is as much of an enigma as the Queen, though he's only been around for a century or so. He looks like a midnight black anthropomorphic (upright) wolf, wearing black washed platemail armour.

:Factions of The Underground:

These are the different groups and organizations with in The Underground. You may make your own faction or group - whatever you want. Just remember to send a PM to me (Inamorata) so that it can be added to this section. Please include a brief summary and a name.

The Black Guard - A militant group of warriors and beings with special skills who maintain order and the few laws of the Duchess with brutal efficiency. The Black Guards are often referred to as the Dogs by the denizens of the Underground, with their leader being The Wolf. They are regarded with mingled respect, awe and fear.

Dark Force - A group of rogue warriors and assassins that maintain a certain level of control on the otherwise chaotic streets of Urus. They are a sort of shadow/criminal police body, ruling the underworld of Urus.

Name: Inamorata
Character Name: Allegra Alta
Race: Human
Age: 19
Personality:
Allegra is a punky, sarcastic girl who tends to get herself into trouble fairly often. She snarks before thinking it through, which often puts her on people's bad sides. She's very stubbourn and has a headstrong nature. However, she can be very kind and is also loyal to a fault.
Physical Description: Allegra has naturally red hair, currently dyed black with dark red and blue tips, cut into a layered, permanently messy pixie cut. She has a small, heart shaped face with wide, seafoam green eyes and small, full lips that always seem to be on the verge of smiling - when she isn't talking. she's short and, though thin, looks fairly curvy for her stature. She's almost always wearing her leather biker jacket, ripped t-shirt and a pair of old, ratty ripped jeans.
Back Story:
Allegra Alta, or A.A. as her father liked to call her, was always an oddball kid. She talked about fantastic beasts, monsters under her bed (or in the house next door) and all sorts of things that, when she was still really young, made people laugh. She never found it funny, simply because it was true - those things were real. As she got older, and still refused to admit they weren't real, it became far less amusing to the adults around her. Eventually, they sent her to various doctors, who would all try to convince her that the things she'd seen were not, in fact, real, but rather were all figments of her imagination. That didn't go over well, which prompted rounds of medications, until she reached the tender age of 18 and told them all to 'kindly go f*k themselves' and left home. That was about a year ago, and if you asked her if she regretted leaving home, she'd tell you she'd never been happier.

It was on that productive train of thought that she, wandering down an alley looking for a place to sleep for the night, stumbled into a Door for the first time and found, quite literally, a world where no one thought she was crazy. At least, not for the usual things...

Allegra looked around herself at the black rock tunnel she'd quite literally fallen into. She had no idea why a random door in the alley lead to a tunnel with black rock that glowed, but she wasn't about to turn up a dry place to sleep when it was pissing rain outside. Shrugging, she brushed herself off and shut the door behind her, closing out the sound of the brewing thunderstorm outside.

Curious, she pressed her hand to the stone wall to see if the glow was a special glow int he dark coating or something. Looking closer, she realized it was the thin tendrils of white that seamed the stone. Fascinated, she looked ahead in to the gloom of the tunnel. Wondering just how far it went, she began following it deeper - the storm outside wouldn't be over for awhile and she wanted to know where the tunnel led.

After what felt like a few hours, when she'd just started wondering if she ought to stop for a while, the wall beside her suddenly gave way to another, slightly larger tunnel. The one she was in continued further, but, as she could see by the opening on her left, was bisected by this larger tunnel. Shrugging, she turned into the opening and kept walking at a leisurely pace.

"How frackin' big is this place? I've got to be blocks away from where I came in by now...Not that it matters, but I hope I can find my way back."

((o 3o looks fun))

Name: killerkitty
Character Name: Diana Cabbleton
Race: Human/weird magical creature mix (though she doesn't know it yet)
Age:17
Personality: Diana is shy and quiet. She gets frustrated and abandons things easily, leaving them until much later. She doesn't have much self confidence and gets embarrassed easily. She's always got her head in the clouds, and isn't very good at making friends. Georgia has stuck with her since childhood and is her best and only friend.
Physical Description: Diana has blonde hair, long and straight, that goes down most her back. She's got pale skin and dark blue-purple eyes. She used to wear glasses but her eyes somehow got better and she doesn't need them anymore. She likes to wear a plain shirt and baggy trousers, nothing too complicated.
Backstory: Diana lives with her mother in a mansion-like house that she says she inherited from her father. Diana has never known her own dad. Her mother says he had died in an accident (not what really happened). Diana sometimes tries to imagine what he would look like, and how he would act, because her mum never says anything about him. Strange things sometimes happen around her. She seems to have lots of good luck, but not only that, but strange phenomenons happen around her, like waking up with the bed on fire, or making a lamp burst when feeling an intense emotion. Georgia calls it her 'little thing'. For some reason Diana's mom never seems surprised by these happenings.

~

Diana was writing fast, following every word the teacher was saying. Georgia was sitting next to her, doodling a little catoony man with a big nose. She gave him a receded hairline and cross-eyes and wrote on top of it 'Mr Scoresby', which was the name of the teacher. Diana elbowed Georgia and hissed, 'What are you doing? You'll get into trouble!'

'Pff, like I care about that,' replied Georgia, running a hand through her wavy light brown hair. 'I can always copy from you, right sweetie?

'You know, one day I won't be here to help you out everytime.' Georgia rolled her eyes at Diana. Finally the bell rang and everyone rushed out of class as quickly as they could, except Diana, who took her time putting her things away. Georgia tapped her foot impatiently. 'Come on,' she said.

Diana and Georgia (or the inseparable D and G, as everyone called them) walked down the street to Diana's mansion-like home. When they arrived, Diana took out her key but found that the door was already unlocked. She swung the door open, and gasped. Instead of the usual hall, a dark tunnel went on into what looked like infinity.

'What... the... hell...?' said Georgia, 'It's not Halloween yet, is it? Not time yet for making Haunted Houses and whatnot? Right?' Diana just stared, dumbfounded.

Diana suddenly grabbed Georgie's arm, her eyes wide. 'We must go,' she whispered, 'I must go home...'

'Hey, Diana? You're kinda freaking me out here. I'm not being punked, am I?' She shook her friend's shoulder, to no response.

Urged by some deep instinct inside of her, Diana moved forward, with Georgia trailing after her. The door closed behind them silently. They moved ever forward, following the dark path.

((Welcome, and glad to hear you're interested! Awesome character/first post!))

Allegra sneezed. And then she sneezed again. Warm this cavern was, clean it was not. She was convinced now that she had to be at least somewhere outside the city limits - she'd been walking forever. She'd taken many more turns after innitially running into that first tunnel bisecting her original path. The tunnels were all uniform in material and colour and light - the only change she ever saw was the size - yet some how she new she was getting deeper, going further down.

For some reason, she felt compelled to continue. Since she had no where to be, and noone to look for her, she simply kept up the steady pace. After awhile she began to hear things - soft noises. Sometimes they'd be scurrying noises, like those of a small rodent, which made sense since she was under ground, but never saw anything. At other points there would be noises similar to human voices, but so indestinct and filled with echoes from rebounding off the endless walls of the tunnels that they could have been anything.

Everytime she heard those, she jumped a mile, if only because you could never tell how close their source was. The design of the tunnels - how they all interconnected - meant that sound could continue to rebound and travel almost indefinitely, or atleast for a very long distance.

As she turned onto another path, she sneezed three times too quick to blink between, the sound violently loud in the relative silence of the tunnel. "God what the hell is in here, super dust?"

((I'm totally in on this!))
Quote:
Name: Keylaleigh
Character Name: Rhymer
Race: Elf
Age: 163, appears to be about 17
Personality: Rhymer is jovial and witty with a love of good food, good music, and an all-around good time. She is friendly and open to any tourists that happen to wander through her home of the Underground, as well as those who live there all the time. Sometimes this overly cheerful manner gets on the nerves of others, but she can't help it.
Physical Description: Rhymer is tall and thin, with smooth red hair tied in complex braids and sparkling green eyes. She loves the clothing of the surface-dwellers, and tries her best to keep up with the most recent fashions.
Backstory: Ever since Rhymer was young, she was a skilled musician, playing the fiddle, tinwhistle, and singing. She lived in the underground all her life, occasionally taking trips to the surface to buy new clothing. She is scolded at by her parents whenever she does this, but she stopped caring about that long ago. She loves wandering the underground, inventing tunes on her whistle as she walks.

---------------------------------------

Rhymer was taking her usual walk, playing some reels on the whistle as she made her way down the twisting passages. She knew all of them by heart, so she wasn't worried about getting lost at all. She just walked and played the whistle, the sound of the lively jig echoing off of the cavernous walls.

She was wearing a new sundress that she had purchased from a boutique on the surface. She loved the way it swished as she walked and how the soft fabric felt on her legs. You couldn't get clothing like that down here if you tried, and the only way to acquire some was to go topworld and get it yourself. She was always careful, wearing a knit beanie to hide her pointed ears from the surface dwellers.

And it was worth the sneaking around. The dress was lovely. She knew that her parents, who were always warning her about the dangers of being discovered, would have a fit once they saw it, but she didn't care. She would still be allowed to keep it, and it would be added to her collection of clothing. A collection that was steadily growing.

Name: Tempest Maximum Aleta
Character Name: Tempest Maximum Aleta
Race: Werewolf/ she doesn't know.
Age: 17. immortal
Personality: Tempest is strong willed and stubborn at times. She tends to be a 'hero.' She can't walk away from someone in trouble. Besides, what does she have to lose? She can't die. She couldn't live with herself if she let someone die. She's very kind most of the time, but not very patience. When stressed, she can be a little demon. Metophorically of corse.
Physical Description: Tempest is tall with extremly pale skin and often gets told she looks like a ghost/ has seen a ghost. Her eyes are a piercing shade of icy blue and her lips are pale pink. She skinny and it's easy to feel her bones. She has huge (13ft span) ebony black wings on her back. (thus comes in the she doesn't know part of her race). Her bones are similar to birds'. She wears short black shorts or short jean shorts and any color tank top at all times. She also wears a black leather jacket and black flip flops. Her eyes turn black when she'd mad. Her wolf form stands about 5'6'' at the shoulder and has midnight black fur.
Backstory: Tempest grew up as a Surface Walker and never believed in vampires, werewolves, withches, etc. Until she woke up on her 16th birthday and had wings on her back. They were small, spanning about six feet, and had grown over night. By her 17th birthday, they were thirteen feet. She took it surprisingly well, and loves her wings, but always wonders. On her 17th birthday, she got bitten by a werewolf when she first stumbled into the Underground. A few weeks later, as she was adapting to life underground and as a werewolf, a dragon named Zahi started following her around. He's been her companion ever since. They speak to each other through their thoughts.
Zahi - http://i54.tinypic.com/21amvbm.png

~Note - character adapted for this role play.

Gah my brain's fried after writing all that, but I'll do my best with this.

I lurked around the shadows of Urus. Zahi was behind be as always. He pushed into my thoughts then. "Where're we going?"
"Dunno," I thought back. "Just felt like lurking."
He mentally laughed at me as we came upon a door. I sniffed. It hadn't been there the day before.
"I don't think I'll every get used to the whole door thing," I told him aloud.
He growled in response as he usually did when I spoke to him instead of thinking to him. I sniffed the air. Someone was in the tunnel.
I motioned to Zahi.
"Hmp?" he asked.
"Hide," I thought. "I wanna see who comes out."
We slid into the shadows. We blended in nicely except for my pale skin and Zahi's red fur. Okay. Not so nicely, but nicely enough.

((I likes this idea, I do. Now, prepare for a wll-o-text; sorry. Sweat ))
Quote:
Name: Sly
Character Name: Jaariel
Race: Fallen Angel
Age: She never tells anyone, although she has been around since roughly the beginning of time, more or less. She appears about 20 in human years though.
Personality: Jaariel is usually quiet and seen as sort of a loner. When she does speak her voice is soft but full of power. She radiates a sense of gentle foreboding, nothing too hostile, just enough to give you the idea that you wouldn’t want to piss her off. She is what one might call the “strong, silent” type. She is kind and wise, but distant. Guarded and no-nonsense, she is seen as rather unapproachable at times, but she’s really quite a caring individual. If, however you are unfortunate enough to make her bad side, WATCH OUT. As a Fallen Angel, she still maintains her heavenly powers, but due to them causing her great pain, she’ll only use them if she absolutely must.
Physical Description: Jaariel is really quite beautiful. As a heavenly host, she had no physical appearance, however now that she is here on Earth, she must have physical form. She is tall and slender with a long neck and elegant, sloping shoulders. Her hair is platinum blond, and flows in gentle waves about her face down to her waist. However, she rarely wears her hair down, choosing instead to wrap it up in a large bun, which she encases in gold netting. She has sapphire-blue eyes that look sad and wise beyond her apparent years, which are about 20 in human terms. She tends to wear simple, flowing dresses…usually opting for white or pastel shades, and sandals that wrap up to her knees. She sometimes wears a pair of black-rimmed square glasses, although she doesn't need them. Her long fingers are bare, save for one ornate opal ring (called the Ring of Sorrows) she wears on her right ring finger. Her nails are always neatly manicured. About her neck is a long silver chain, at the end of which hangs a tarnished-looking cross with a dazzling gem in the middle. Tattoos decorate her pale arms, starting in the middle of her chest, going across her collarbones and down to her middle fingertips. She also has tattoos on her face; starting on her forehead they go around the edges of her face. These tattoos are old Enochian symbols binding her to her physical body and, subsequently, to this world.
Backstory: As an angel, Jaariel was an Archangel. In charge of heaven’s troops, she was something like the female equivalent of what Michael is in traditional Christianity. Though fierce when she had to be she was always kind and loving. Out of all the angels, she was loved and adored by every otherworldly hosts heavenly, and demonic alike; this would be her downfall. Her love for everything (including humanity) was such that when she came across Isren, a mortal man, she couldn’t stop herself from being slightly taken with him. As time passed she would watch him, even venturing trips down to the mortal world (in the form of unseen energy) to be closer to him. She was warned time and again to halt her infatuation and stop spying on the mortals (for to be a host of heaven, one must hold no ties to the mortal realm) but she was young and impetuous at the time. Isren was charming, dark, and mysterious to her…a nut she just had to crack. One night, forsaking all Vows she had ever taken to her Heavenly Father, she decided to appear to Isren in a dream. He wasn’t surprised or startled; on the contrary, he was happy to talk with her. Secretly she returned to Isren’s dreams for many months. Through her chat with him, she discovered that Isren was a sorcerer and could make her wish of living a mortal life with him come true, through a series of binding spells. Naive and foolish, Jaariel agreed, although she knew any spell that could bind an Angel was Black Magic. She didn’t care. Life as a warrior for heaven was tiring, and although she was tough she really desired peace and love…and didn’t she deserve it!? Isren never questioned her, or made her do things she didn’t like for a cause, he just listened to her, watched her…loved her. On a dark and stormy night a millennia ago, Jaariel took the plunge…and in a long and complicated ritual, she became human, her angelic powers, however, remained. Her life of love and peace was not to be, however. Isren, who had seemed so kind at first, it turned out, was evil, vindictive and malicious. As a Dark Priest, he had been sent forth by his Master to Capture an Angel on earth; Jaariel had fallen straight into his trap. Enraged by this, Jaariel confronted Isren and in an epic battle slay him. The battle left her weak and barely clinging to her mortal life; desperate she called out to heaven for help. She was sorry she had betrayed her brethren, and she only wanted to go home. No fewer than 20 angels came to her aide, Gabriel the Messenger among them. They saved her mortal life, but because she was in human form, none of them could return her to heaven. Turning to her fellow Archangel, she begged him to ask their Father to help return her to her angelic form, but Gabriel, with true sorrow in his voice told her of her punishment. Because she had gone against God, she was condemned for a century to the mortal realm…however, because she had slain a mortal (evil though he was) in vengeance, she would never be allowed to return to the realm of the divine. Now Jaariel bides her time in the underground, and hammers out a living buying, selling, restoring, and translating ancient texts in her book shop.

On another day walking the tunnels from her small home to her book shop in town, Jaariel pauses, listening to the sighing of the wind...and something else.

"What's going on today...? There seems to be a lot of traffic. I can feel several souls in the tunnels...and not all of them belong down here. Oh well, as long as things stay quiet, I won't have to intervene."

She continues her trek, walking briskly....

As Rhymer skipped down the tunnels, she could hear footsteps other than her own. She stopped playing her whistle, putting it in the holster to her side, and started to walk a little slower. Someone else was here, and this was a part of the tunnels that usually didn't get much activity. She was perfectly silent. And then she heard a sneeze. And another. And another.

"God what the hell is in here, super dust?"

She heard the voice of a female a little further down. One that she had never seen before. And she knew most of the beings of the Underground. Must be... her eyes lit up. A human! She made her way down the tunnel until she saw the unusually dressed human. "Excuse me, ma'am... but are you lost?" She was still wearing the knit beanie due to the fact that it was a little chilly this evening.

Allegra clamped down on another sneeze trying to burst out, which made her eyes water and produced the sort of strangled wheezy nasal sound all humans made when they did that sort of thing. She was about to wipe her eyes when a cheerful voice suddenly spoke from directly behind her. Jumping half a mile, she did an odd little pirouette mid leap and came down unsteadily faceing the stranger - an attractive elfish looking woman.

Holding the wall for support with one hand, and the other clutching her chest as if she were trying to keep her heart contained with in, she said "Nah. You're only lost if you have somewhere else to be. I'm not lost, I'm exploring. Creatively. You know, off-the-wing kind of." her voice was a shade higher than normal, and breezy from her heart being kicked into gallop. As she realized the woman looked friendly - as well as beautiful - and relatively normal in a pretty sundress, which no matter how odd for someone in a tunnel, she still found reassuring - her heart slowed back to normal and she straightened up. Blinking, she realized the woman was wearing a knit hat of some sort. She thought they were called beanies. It looked odd, but she figured it didn't really matter. They were in a glowing underground tunnel after all.

"But just out of pure curiosity...where are we? Do you know? I came in through a door in an alley in Toronto. It was about to rain, so I figured 'hey, why not, not like I have anywhere better to be', and here I am. These tunnels go on for, like, ever. And what's up with the glowing walls? How do they do that?" she added the last part as an afterthought, not really expecting an answer, but wondering aloud anyways.

Rhymer chuckled. It had been a while since a new person appeared in the tunnels. "Welcome to the Underground." She swept a hand across, showing off the tunnel system. "All sorts of things live down here! Follow me!" She grabbed the human's hand, dragging her down one of tunnels. "If you're exploring, you should at least be doing so with some direction so you don't get too lost."

"I'm not quite sure why the walls glow. They just do." Rhymer had never really thought about that, taking it all for granted.
