@Maeve: No problem I speak Swiss German and German and learn French and English at school.
In the main part of Switzerland we speak Swiss German, that's similar to German, like a German dialect. Every district has a bit another dialect, so most of the time you can hear where the speaker is from (if you know the diffrent dialects, of course). Everyone here can also speak German. But there are also other parts in Switzerland, in one part you speak French, in another Italian. In another little part you also speak Romanish, but most of the people there can also speak Swiss German and German, because Romanish is going to become extinct (about 0.5% of all the Swiss speak Romanish). That's why the official languages are German, French, Italian and Romanish.
