.:: News ::.

July's challenge is done!
You know what that means? Yes, August's challenge starts... NOW!
Get drawing, and hope you will have fun with this one ^^

.:: Introduction ::.

A few months ago, I randomly stumbled on a journal entry of one of the artists I follow on DeviantArt. Basically, that guy was talking about a challenge of a sort his friends and him had created. They would pick a theme and set a certain period of time during which they would work on a picture for that theme, and at the end of that period they would show their work to each other and receive critics and feedbacks. I thought it was a pretty nice idea and that it could be interesting to try it on Midorea.

The challenges are made for fun, though you can ask for critics and feedbacks if you'd like some. You don't need to make a masterpiece each time, though I'd still ask that you make some effort. You have a month to do it, after all. Anyone can enter the challenge, leave suggestions and comments and chat here. You don't need to do anything to join, though I would appreciate if you stick around and chat a bit to make the thread more lively. I'm also always looking for theme suggestions and ideas to make the challenge better and more fun for everyone.

.:: Rules ::.

1° Follow Midorea's rules.
This mostly means:
- Everything post here should be PG-13, including theme suggestions, links and pictures.
- Pictures should be at most 600x600 pixels. If your picture is larger, make a miniature of it or just post a link to the full version.

2° No stealing of someone else picture.
No tracing or editing other people pictures and saying they are your own work.
If you've used references, please credit and/or post a link to them.

3° Respect everyone.
It is fine to post critics and comments about someone else's picture, especially if they have asked for it, but please give constructive critics and comments.

4° I can add more rules at any time.

.:: Monthly Challenge ::.
So, every month, this section will be updated with a new challenge. Basically, a challenge will consist of a combination of at least two suggested categories (see next post for more information). I'll also try to add useful links and stuff to make it more interesting, and feel free to do the same.

August 2010:
  • Media: Pencil (lead)
  • Style: Sketch
  • Theme: Still life
Wikipedia wrote:
A still life (plural still lifes[1]) is a work of art depicting mostly inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, or shells) or man-made (drinking glasses, books, vases, jewelry, coins, pipes, and so on) in an artificial setting.

So, the challenge for this month is basically to find some object and draw it. Still lifes are a good way to understand how shapes work within space, and lighting/shadow.
Have fun and draw a lot! Big Grin

.:: Monthly Contest ::.
The monthly challenge is there to motivate you to draw various things, though I thought it would be nice to add a little competitive aspect to it. So, we'll now have monthly contest too. Big Grin
At the beginning of each month, I'll post a random character description (either from Seventh Sanctum or another generator site, or made by me). You will then have a month to draw a character that fits that description. The prize will vary from month to month, but they will more likely be a nice amount of silver.
I've chosen to focus on character drawing for now, since it seems a lot of people want to work on their anatomic knowledge. Depending of how things go, the future contests could be about other things.

August 2010:
This time, I'll left the contest more open. You will need to design a humanoid character and make a picture of him. "Humanoid" simply means that he can be human or have different features that are not seen on normal humans, as long as the basic shape is human-like.
If you have any question, just ask!

.:: Previous Challenges ::.

July '10: Pencil Sketches of human anatomy

.:: Future Challenges ::.

This is where I'll keep a list of themes and suggestions from future challenges. If you'd like to add anything, just post in the thread saying so. The only requirement is that it must be PG-13 (so no porn/overly violent/drug or alcohol related suggestions). And of course it must be something that can be drawn.
To keep things clear, I've decided to split the suggestions in categories. Right now there are three: media, style and theme. Media is for anything you can make art with, for example pencil, ballpoint pen, watercolor, computer, etc. Style is for the various styles of drawing, for example cartoon, manga, sketch and computer graphic. And themes are what the pictures show, directly or indirectly. More categories will be added if you think it's useful.

Media:
Pen (ballpoint, gel)
Pencil (lead, color)

Styles:
Cartoon
Cubism ~ suggested by Dreamer676 Bouncy Heart
Manga
Realism
Sketch

Themes:
Anatomy (human)
Anthro ~ suggested by Dreamer676 Bouncy Heart
Steampunk ~ suggested by Chaomiles Bouncy Heart

.:: Library ::.

This thread was made to help artists get better, so I thought it could be nice to have a section where we could keep links to useful sites and tutorials.
If you have any you'd like to add, just post the in this thread with a short description and I'll add them. Big Grin

Art Hospital: Art Hospital is a group on DA that collects tutorials, articles and stocks to help artists. Visiting their gallery is strongly recommended.

Artnatomy: A little tool that allows you to play with the face muscles to learn how they work and affect the expression of a character.

Cederseed's Tutorials Folder: Cedarseed is an active DA artist that has made some great tutorials, especially about anatomy.

Drawspace.com: A site with many many tutorials, mostly about traditional (pencil) art.

Expression Tutorial: A nice little tutorial from Alexds1 on DA. Check the artist comment section too. It contains a list of links to other tutorials made by the same artist.

Manga Tutorials: A site with useful tutorials for all aspiring manga artists (and can be good even if you prefer other style).

Posemaniacs.com: A site with tons of pictures of nude 3D models, really useful to practise anatomy and for reference.

25 Expressions Challenge: This is not a tutorial, but it's a nice tool to learn to draw your characters. It goes with this tutorial

Dreamer gave me a strange idea, but it has little do to with the topic at hand... or does it? Anyhoo, I've got a few suggestions. Zodiacs or astrology, phobias, monsters/ mythical animals.

Yeah, I was thinking about that one too Big Grin

Anyway, suggestions were added to the list. Thanks Bouncy Heart

Now, we only have to wait a little to see if other people are interested to join us or have more ideas.
Midorea really needs more activity... Duh

My thoughts, concerning the zodiac one, however is a bit strange. I mean what would it look like if you crossed Chinese zodiac with Astrological ones? I bet some people's would look very strange. Mine would be a hybrid of an ox with a dolphin.

Uh, dragon + virgo...

Lips are Zipped

Hm, I guess we could have a sub-theme thing, like the theme is the main idea people need to work on for the month, and the sub-theme is there to give them more ideas or guide them because the theme is too generic (like for countries, themes could be being there right now, events of the past, mythology, etc.). Or something...

yeah subtheme's would probably stem the over generalisation, it might make it a little easier to come up with an idea too Happy Which is good esp. for me lol

Yes, that's what I thought.
Though, I think maybe sub-theme could be optional, like they are there to help if you need it, but if you already have a super idea just with the main theme, you can ignore the sub-theme...
Or maybe I'll just make more precise theme...

I would just keep with the optional subtheme, or an optional guideline that kind of thing Smile but yeah that's just me :3
