Did I get your attention? XD Good.

Now in all seriousness, I'd like to present an idea to everyone:

In some cultures, religion causes people to believe that their souls will be taken if any image of them is made. Of course, living in the technologically advanced societies that we do today, most people don't believe such things and mark them off as superstition. However, how far is the former belief from the truth?

Think about this philosophically: Cameras are but a small part of technology, which basically all stores personal information about us. Cameras "know" what we look like, and computers and cell phones "know" where we live. And of course, there's all of the information about ourselves that we store and share on our beloved electronic devices daily.

We've gone very far in the few years that we've been on this planet, looking at it on a geological timeline. But it seems more and more prominent that something is wrong with society in general, and it's certainly not found in the less technologically advanced societies, but the modern ones. And what makes us modern? Technology.

We've basically all become desensitized, and it wouldn't be a stretch to partially blame technology on this. Through the Internet alone, countless X-rated images, blog entries, and videos are shared daily, and we've all run across rather undesirable things at least once through it. Some of us don't even pay mind to it anymore - but what does that say about us as a society? Are our "souls" being tainted or even taken by this technology?

I for one scream like a little rat every time I happen across porn on a websearch. .-. It'll be like, "AW THAT PENGUIN IS SO CUTE! -Clicks- ....is that bottle going where I think it's going!? O_O"

I mean, seriously. D=

I think that texting is why most kids can't spell anymore. I swear I hate the whole txt tlk thing, spell out your damn words. Most phones have a big enough character limit that you don't need to do that. D<

My feeble little mind hurts now.

But seriously Chu, I see where your coming from, there is something wrong with society now. Technology has changed us - not to say the historic world was perfect, they were jackasses too - but really it comes down to the human condition, we're always going to try and push it, something always has to be better, we invented technology to the point where it "owns" us.

I remember when I was on the train, about a month ago now, it was about an hours journey. There was a man who was sitting next to about three other people at a small table and yet was still chatting on his headset phone, looking like an idiot and being rude in my opinion, yet no one seemed to give a damn. My Mom was saying how she'd be too embarrassed to do something like that and I agreed. Then there was the guy opposite me and my Mom who was looking out the window, like me, but as a secondary thing to keep him busy he was messing around with his iPhone while my secondary thing to do was a Sudoku puzzle. Most of the people on that train couldn't go for about an hour without messing about with a bit of tech.

It's all a little scary when you think about it, if tech ever leaves us we're going to be screwed.

Of course option two is that tech becomes evil and tries to kill us all, but that would amuse me, until the microwave tries to coax me into putting my head in there.

I think that it was somewhat true, I guess? Because there's lots of people saying that they can "see" your future (a few selected in the world). Perhaps you have heard of them, but they "see" your past life and as well as others around you. I think that it's really close to "your soul being taken," but not quite. I think that technology does change us, and we don't think that way anymore. We don't think that the Gods is leading us anymore. In the modern world, I think that we always think that there is logic or a system or pattern in doing things. For example, computer chips always have something in them to help them function. Same with cameras. There is always a logic of why the chips in the camera words. So I think that people now think that way as well. Everything has an answer, as long as you solve the problem.
However, that is not quite so every time, because if God really existed, then not everything has to go by the laws of physics and science and whatnot. I think that not everything goes with the "there must be a way of solving everything," because sometimes, things God comes up with isn't concerning us humans, and that we don't need to have a "logic" to everything. Yes, this is kind of weird and long, and I think that I myself doesn't get what I'm talking about Shocked But still
Argh my brain hurts now

technology is a tool it depends on how we use it. you talk of things being sentient (can't spell Sad) I don't think my camera know anything besides to take an image when I press the button. If it did I'd be removing its brain every time I take the memory chip out O.O I'm a brain surgeon.

I don't see the problem, with the technology ridden world compared to the non tech worlds, they've each got there own problems.
here in tech world we've got water plants that clean our water with lots of nasty chemicals, that could affect us. in the non tech world you've got a river but you don't know if anyone pooped in it upstream >_<

Well computers do 'remember' cause of ram and such but have you ever used a computer with no memory? its horrid.
and you can delete the memory if it bothers you so much

my personal laptop was filled with me, all me, and now it isn't because I had to reintall the operating stuffs <.<;

and no matter what you say death on the internet is never as intense as it in real life.

You bring up some great informed points

I personally must be one of those people who is technology in love, but

In all honesty we have a love / hate relationship

I don't really like Mobiles, I have one but I don't really use it

And if anyone calls I'm like, Eek, it's ringing, lol

By the way, if photos really do steal your soul I'm doomed

LOL, everyone's like you're so photogenic, get in the photo, lol

But in all honesty, humans have always strived to find tools

To make our lives easier (even if they tend to make life harder, lol)

In the stone age we used sticks now we use guns in the future who

Knows what we'll use, maybe laser rays...???

The world, and the people in it, are always changing and adapting

To whatever Science shoves in our faces (look shiny iphone, lol)

And, if you don't know how to turn on a computer these Days

You're frowned upon by some people

Years ago, a typewriter would have served as microsoft word pad

And in the future we'll probably be writing in thin air and it will be

Registered by a sensor that will send the info to any computer

On the planet, lol

It's either evolve or get lost along the way, which is kind of sad

I still prefer books to movies, and I still fill out puzzles in magazines

These might be the only un technological things that I do if you consider

Even my keyboard and guitar have an a/c plug, lol

Well, I'm done with my rant *Grin*

Makes sense with it because the screen is watching you(unless you close it) and following you(You bring it with you) and you get obsessed with it. though it does make things easier.(it doesn't help life all the time,it doesn't give you food or anything....)

hmm... its an interesting idea!

i agree with the fact that we are very desensitized. the internet doesnt understand the meaning of the word "taboo", for one thing, so everything is fair game here!

as for cameras stealing souls - nonsense. cameras are important. they document everything, one way or another. they document a fashion movement, a friend's party, political events, you name it. in this sense you might say the camera saves our souls. When we die, the pictures are what remains.

Whoa, never thought I'd do that and I don't have a cellphone and I don't know if I should(most classmates I know have them well I'm the only who doesn't have one in my family)Have one though my mom and my eldest sister says I should but I'm not convinced yet(Beh,I should have made a topic for it.)

i mean HOLY @_@..how can they even THINK of it...? i hope it was kids who say that.. it's adults and elders whom i really respect, but i can never quit drawing because of a myth or a rumor.. it's like a nightmare, whenever i see an elder i HIDE my drawings & RUN away!! >_< *coz talking doesn't work* Sweat

Well, that explains why i'm not photogenic.
No soul to take, no special picture to be made.

(All hail the Ginger Seperatist Movement!)

But serously, a noticable portion of primitive cultures that believe that camera's take your soul also believe that red hared people don't have souls.
Not sure why, but i think its pretty neat'o.

I think a soul can only be as tainted as the soul itself allows. Unfortunately, this tainting can be sneaky and unnoticed until it becomes to late.

To an extent, technology has blinded us to much. Coming from someone who avoids it whenever I can (other than my computer, of course,) technology seems to be moving in directions that are both useless and devoid of meaning. What use do we have for a smart phone when we can't even feed all of our population?

Not only that, but technology is a big industry because it gives revenue, not because it actually benefits our kind. Maybe we talk a bit more, but we're not really communicating. Maybe we budget our time better, but we're not really enjoying it any more.

There comes a point when you have to wonder if it's all worth it.

I love technology, to a point. It brought us fast and useful heating for food and drink, it brought us easy hygeine, it brought us fast travel and communication. What I don't like is how consumerism uses it and wastes resources. A decent smart phone can last several years, yet becomes obsolete within six months. This drive by corporations wastes resources as new phones, cameras, etc. are constantly invented and sold, while perfectly useable ones that are a long way from dying completely are just tossed out. I love technology, but I can't stand it not being used until it dies at the end of it's life.
