I don't understand what's so fascinating with steam punk nor do I understand what the sudden BOOM with it is. I remember hearing it ONCE in my life, about a month ago then all of a sudden everyone around me were all "OMG STEAMPUNKLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLL" in a very annoying fashion.
Tho, I can not deny that the corset is something I wouldn't mind owning... Tho it may be just because I like renaissance styled corsets (and some of the clothing in general.)

| Nikki - Honestly I don't know what's with the sudden craze. o_O I don't know where it came from, or when it got trendy. Doesn't bother me though XD; It's just a matter of combining fashion and technology (old technology... like cyberpunk is new?). If you like both and/or are a huge history nerd then Steampunk is probably interesting. If not, then... well, it's just not?
Neffable - <33 I pretty much agree with everything you said. >_> and I also have bjds that I plan on making steampunk outfits for...

| I've hears a lot about Steampunk lately as well.
My hubby just got addicted to it when he stumbled on a couple forums about it. I admit, it is VERY interesting to see people's creations for Steampunk. When my hubby was looking through Steampunk forums, he found Dr. Steel. Its safe to say, I instantly fell in love. <3>W<

@Kaishi; Ah the history thing may play a big part in my "meh" in the situation. X3 I absolutely hate history and couldn't understand it even if my life depended on it.

| o.O History helps us not be retarded. Without it, you make the same mistakes over again.
The steam punk fad has been growing with a few steam punk animes, but if you recall movies like Wild Wild West where there were some steam punk elements, its been in popular media for a while.
Allure comes from the romanticization of Victorian era, simmilar to that of the era of cowboys, with the addition of being less pathetic because of the possibilities of steam before our society was "destroyed" by industrialization completely.

A good way of describing steampunk is a genre taking Victorian times (including cowboy America ) and throwing in some modern conveniences powered by steam. The big difference is that television, computers, and cell phones are strictly not allowed, and societal norms and gender roles are completely ignored. (Which is why it also works with the American '20s, what with flappers and all that.) Of course, there are instances where someone will change that, with women still with long hair and dresses, and maybe having some extreme racism, but it's not common. A lot of times they'll combine fantasy elements with it, too.
As for the unexpected boom, I know there was a small rise of popularity with the release of the The Golden Compass film adaptation. It was kinda steampunk-y (giant zeppelin, anyone?) I know a few televisionchannels when advertising the film would have this whole "Steampunk. noun. [insert definition here]" which alerted more people to the term, and thus they joined the fandom.
Nikki: I agree that it can get annoying, but that's because of the overuse of the term. It probably makes me seem elitist, but I like correcting people that just because you put gears on it doesn't make it steampunk. I'm a history buff, but anything that's misrepresented as steampunk can be can definitely get annoying.
Kaishi: *cough* Off topic, but your BF Emilie is adorable. <3 *just went to your dA to see if they were there* I'd really like to get my hands on an Emilie male, but Bluefairy's site hasn't worked in ages and I just plain don't check the doll areas of forum marketplaces. *shrug* (Which I probably should. Great deals. *got a secondhand Leekeworld Koji for $350 +custom face up, outfit, and eyes*) All right, back on topic ~

| Nikki - Σ(-`Д´-ノ;)ノ?! ...... history is just like an awesome story! Besides it's usefulness, it can be very entertaining. It's not hard to understand. Just in HS they make you memorize a bajillion dates and terms....
(also, sorry if your computer doesn't support those characters XD)
Neff -- ILU. All your explanations are great. And... ty. I love my Emilie XD I think I will open a BJD thread >___> Been thinking about it for a while, but now I want to talk about them and bleeeh.
Glad you understand, Chere ^_^ It's really a wonderful genre. I'd just sort of ignore the hype, lol.
AS FOR THE REST OF YOU...! For those who are familiar with the hobby, let's discuss it! Linking to stuff for discussion is a-ok.
Anybody got any favorite shows/movies/etc?

But yes. -clears throat-
I love steampunk. I think it's beautiful and inspiring and awesome.
Unfortunately, I am very poor and I can't buy beautiful steampunk items, or attempt to make them.
Has anybody seen the movie Steamboy?

| I love Steampunk. The very idea of it is amazing. Especially steampunk fantasy. Rawr. :3 Unfortunately, I have almost no access to steampunky stuffs and I can't sew. ;_; Anyway, I'd like to read "Clockwork Heart" by Dru Pagliassotti. I've read the description on Amazon.com and thought it might be interesting. Unfortunately, the book is not available where I live and I don't have a credit card.
The corset is gorgeous~! <3

That is very pretty
I love steampunk, but I'm more into Lolita.
Victorian Era clothing is so pretty in general.
I've noticed, as others in this thread stated, steampunk has become very popular lately as elements of it have appeared in various media.
