Solinaria

The Setting

There are two worlds, Solinaria and Khaladar. Solinaria is the world of dragons, Khaladar is that of humans. After millennium of living in quiet unity, though, the two worlds end up at war with one another, and the portals that once connected them are almost completely destroyed.

Thousands of years passed and the Ne'Ente, Sisk, and Treva, evolved into something more. They became a people that were so entwined with their dragon counterparts that a bond formed at birth that could only be broken by death.

Out of that an even more unusual child was born. She was bound to more then a single dragon. The effects that a death of only a single dragon on the girl are a mystery, but there are suspicions. So she is protected at all costs...until she disappears from Solinaria and finds her way into Khaladar.

About Khaladar

As stated previously Khaladar is the land of humans. Most of the residents do not believe the legends of dragons are anything more then wives tales after so long away from them. The King ruling over the land works hard to ensure that it remains so. The few that do know the truth are hunted like animals, and any evidence that is found is destroyed.

The Places

Riswood

A vast forest surrounds the single portal that still remains functioning in Khaladar. The forest is a dense tangle of tree and foliage that only the most skilled woodsmen and hunters can traverse. Even though that are versed in the way of the wild find it almost impossible to navigate the deepest parts of this forest. The portal stands in the very center of this dense forest in an unexpected clearing that has never been reached before.

Estonia

A large, vibrant city that is home to some of the wealthiest, and poorest, citizens on the world of Khaladar. The city sits on the edge of Riswood with a long forgotten legend that pertains to the hidden portal. In the center of the city stands a column that is maintained simply for it's antiquity. The purpose of the city was carved into the pitted surface of the weather worn stone in a language that few remember.

Estonia is also the home of one of the oldest standing castles in existence. Burace, Castle of the Ebony Wing. The secrets of it's hallowed halls are kept silent by the order that took residence there on pain of death.

Istalindar

This is a small, but fast growing province. It mostly consists of farmland and country folk, but there is one city that is the hub of the region. This is Normere, and it is the city that most of the religious organizations have claimed for their own. These causes quite a bit of conflict, but also brings in a large amount of trade.

About Solinaria

This is the world of dragons, the world of legends that have long been lost to humanity. Here the people, the Araliss, have learned much from the wisdom of their brethren. They have lived in harmony and enjoyed the company of their large, winged and lizard like friends. They have, however, never forgotten the cruelty and destruction that was wrought on them by the NeEnte of Khaladar.

The Places

Aslion:

Solinaria has only one large city. It is located deep in the mist blanketed forest of Kroh. Rather then clear the land of it's splendid trees, the city was build around the wild wood. This city even seems to grow as the forest does. Aslion is also the cultural hub on the world, a place that has been claimed by the nobles that were trapped on the world.

The Khro Forest

The wood that is home to Aslion. Many dangers are hidden within it's shadowed recesses, but there are just as many wonders to be found. Few of the Araliss, however, dare to wander off the marked and well traveled paths. Creatures wander the wood that have no fear of humans, and will attack without hesitation. It is rare that a traveler not accompanied by a Dragon will even consider exploration of the vast forest surrounding their city. Those that do are rarely seen agian.

Gammel Ocean

The beauty of this sparkling sea is a mystery to the people of Aslion. It is spoken of in song and legend but most that do not have a kinship with dragons have never seen it. Unfortunately it is rare that they would have an opportunity to. Those that do hold what they see close to their hearts and tell few others more the vague descriptions.

The Caverns of Modeste

Dark and forbidding caverns that have been abandoned centuries passed. No one, even the most fool hardy, dare to venture into them. These are the very caverns where an entire clutch of eggs was destroyed by a single NeEnte that managed to sneak into it. It is rumored that the spirit of the brood mother, who died shortly after the tragedy, still roams the cavern. It is also believed that she will kill any trespasser.

The Alcander Dessert

A vast, seemingly endless dessert stretches from the edge of the Khro forest to the shining Gammel Ocean. The heat is intense and unbearable. This is where the portals to Khalandar were once located. The destruction of the portals caused the dessert to form. Only carefully planned expeditions can cross, now, and live.

The Races

Sisk

A rarely seen race of elves. They are short in stature and spend much of their time mining the bowels of Khaladar. They tend to be dark skinned and pale haired. Their ears come to a point, and the men tend to favor long, flowing beards.

Araliss

The humans that live on Solinaria. They vary in appearance, but most of them have a bond to at least one dragon. If this bond is severed by the death of one, the other will also die.

NeEnte

The humans that live on Khaladar. They are only called this by the Araliss. They vary in appearance and most know nothing of dragons. Those that do then to war against one another depending on their view of the creatures.

Treva

These are a people that are rarely seen. They are tall and godlike with a fair appearance and nearly white eyes. Whispered legends speak of the powers they have, but none have witnessed it. They are warlike and need little reason to battle. Most view them as barbaric.

Religion and Belief

Laarkshin

This is a belief that dragons are the otherworldly saviors of the Sisk. Great works of art have been created to depict every aspect of what the words in their sacred tomes describe. Much of the art that reached Ne'Ente lands have been destroyed the the Seekers due to the depiction of Dragons.

The Followers of Rhan

This is the religion that all of the Treva follow. Rhan was one a mortal that, through the glory of battle, was raised to godhood. He is a young and fickle god that is often needlessly cruel and demands a bloody sacrifice. This can usually be satisfied in battle, but sometimes it must be paid by one of the Treva when there is no war to be fought. Any that turn their back on Rhan are exiled and killed on sight.

Morina

Often called Followers of Light, this is the religion that most, if not all, of the NeEnte follow. It includes strict rules and guidelines as well as rewards and punishments in the afterlife depending on how closely you followed the teachings. It is a religion that discounts all other ways and all other gods. The god of this religion has no name that is known to men, and arrogantly calls himself the creator of the universe. The Seekers are sent forth from these temples to destroy everything that mentions dragons.

The Ebony Wing

This is an order that brings all races together to preserve what information they can of the dragons. Though much has been destroyed, the libraries of their castle are filled with what they have been able to preserve. The secret is held on pain of death to prevent the Seekers from attempting to wage a needless war against them.

The Portal

A stone structure that has a twin in Solinaria that remains untouched by time. The foliage does not grow onto the sun bathed portal. It's magic drives away the tendencies of nature. One side of the portal is solid with beautiful carvings of dragons and other fanciful flying creatures. The other-side is an almost liquid looking substance that swirls in a hypnotic dance, it's green-blue color bringing vast oceans to mind.

Player Name: Amlynd
Character name: Alton Erhieard
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Race: NeEnte
Weapons: He has a little bit of experience with a lot of weapons, considering his father's profession.
Personality: Alton is a little bit awkward, but fiercely loyal to both his friends and his principles.
Known Occupation: He is an inventor, but he is also apprenticed to his father, a blacksmith, who lives and works at the edge of the Riswood forest.
Abilities: Alton is generally not too shabby at making something out of nothing, and is quick to come up with solutions to problems that might not prove themselves nearly as solveable to a less mechanical mind. He doesn't have any extraordinary powers, but he's got a sharp mind. He's also been blessed with the ability to look astonishingly good in a severe waist coat and STILL not have any social skills.
Religion: None, but will likely join the Ebony Wing (unless he gets all technical and starts calling it a political ideology or something...you know how those inventors can be).
Side: For Dragons (but not openly)
Appearance: Alton's slender frame and tendency towards wearing long sleeves and pants that don't fit create the illusion of a very scrawny young man, which is only almost true. While it's obvious that he isn't a bodybuilder, Alton's lean form is actually rather muscular--good for running. Especially away. He has a long face and his eyes droop a little, possibly because there are only twenty four hours in the day and he spends twenty five of them doing something besides sleeping. He has a bit of a mad scientist look to him, and keeps his mousy brown hair tied with string at the base of his neck.

It had been some time since rumors of a girl from Solinaria began to spread. There were more and more sightings of dragons around the lands of Khaladar, especially near the larger cities. Though there is talk of them moving towards Istalindar. The description of the oddly marked girl had been posted everywhere that the kinds men could get them. It specifically called for her to be brought to him alive.

The woman herself, Callista, was not at all what the King had made her out to be. She was not the monster that Arman wanted people to believe she was. The girl was a kind soul that was lost in a world she did not belong to. The man had even killed the one friend she had managed to make, a man that she had actually started to fall in love with.

The girl slipped into the first building she could find. Her dragon companions were hiding safely away in a well hidden cavern, ready to go to the girl as soon as they felt it was needed. She paid no attention to where she was, or who was around her, and her hair was arranged in a way that was meant to hide the mark that covered half of her face. She had seen the Kings men, and she knew that they would recognize her, even if no one else did. She just hoped that the guards would not come into her chosen hiding spot.

It was rare that Alton left the seclusion of his father's home, but when he did, it was always with business in mind. Now, with a strong horse beneath him and a list of materials written in a scrawl that only a blacksmith's son could read, the young man came to a horrible realization, one that he would never admit out loud.

He was lost.

Of course, it wasn't so bad, being lost, as long as there was a settlement between you and the place you were going. The little village wasn't terribly far removed from what he assumed was his original path. Perhaps they would be able to give him directions to the capital city.

As usual in towns so close to the Estonia, Alton was stopped along the main road and questioned about the small collection of weaponry he carried on the back of his horse. It was sparse in number, but his father was an excellent craftsman; it was hard to go very far without his handiwork being recognized.

Luckily, the list of materials his father had sent him out to buy also bore his crest. The guards let him pass without a fuss.

Alton didn't dare ask them for directions, however. He wasn't fond of the king's men; they made him uncomfortable, for some reason or another, possibly because it was easy to entertain the idea that they were passing judgement on him from beneath their shiny helmets.

It was probably even true.

So, instead of troubling with their judgmental stares, he set about to looking for someone else. The town, however, appeared to be full of recluses; no one appeared to be outside.

He sighed, swinging himself down off the horse and hitching it to the appropriate hardware. For a moment, he considered bringing the bag it held along on his back. But Boris was a vicious horse, and he was fairly certain no one would steal his things.

And on that pleasant note, he ducked into the inn, trying to look a little pluckier than usual. The effect was about that of a small dog attempting to bait a crocodile.

Callista could not help but jump and give a little scream when the man entered the building. Who was he? Was he one of the kings men? Was he someone that had been paid specifically to find her, or her dragons? When she got a good look at him she decided that he was none of those things. Just a man trying to buy something most likely.

Unfortunately, her quick movements had caused her hair to move out of place and she had to quickly pull it back into place. This meant that the marking of a green dragon that was on her cheek was exposed to the man for a moment. The Araliss could only hope that he had not noticed before she managed to hide it again.

As quickly as she could, without drawing to much more attention to herself, she pretended to examine the notice that had been posted inside of the building. She realized, while looking at it, that she really needed to be more careful. A very accurate description had been posted there. Hopefully the shop keeper was to distracted by the man that had just entered to notice while she slipped out of the building and found another place to hide.

"Oi, erm, hello," Alton said, his shaking voice alerting those around him that fresh meat had indeed entered their midst. It didn't seem like a particularly violent town, but they probably didn't like outsiders very much, especially not when those outsiders had nice horses and stupid looking coats.

He swallowed the nervous lump in his throat and continued.

"Uhm, I--"

He had forgotten exactly what it was he'd come in here for now. "Ah, erm, nevermind, I'm just...uh...looking. Yes. I heard about..." He looked around for something of interest, noticed the poster hung from the nail on the wall. "About that Callista...lady. Just wanted to see what all the kerfuffel was about."

Surely they thought he was retarded now. Those rumors had only been around for what, months?

He made his way over to the notice, trying to look busy around it. "Sheesh," he commented to the hooded figure, "tough crowd, these old codgers."

She looked at him, her eyes wide. The Araliss could hear her heart pounding in her ears, and was pretty sure that he would be able to hear it as well. Celestia barely suppressed a whimper when he used her name, and hoped that not one looked to closely at her. She pulled her cloak around her all the tighter for added measure.

"Y-yes...I suppose so." Her accept was odd. She did not sound like she was from the area. It was unlike any accent people had heard in the region. She could practically feel the eyes boring into her back. "I should.." She trailed off as the first man grabbed her, and she immediately went to struggling with him, "Let me go!" Her hood fell back again, revealing her long, red hair, and the tattoo like mark on her cheek.

"It's her, someone call the guards." Callista screamed and tried to kick the man in the knee before she ran out of the store, practically knocking the man over, and searched desperately for another place she could hide. The guards would know she was there soon. She knew she would have to move quickly. but how could she do it undetected.

Alton cursed, a particularly choice swear that left his back stinging with the phantom beating administered by his guilty conscience. So that had been her, and he had just blown her cover with his big, stupid mouth. Young inventors, the boy reminded himself, should probably not speak to hooded strangers about political goings on (for that matter, young blacksmiths might have been better off avoiding the same thing, as Alton's father had implied years ago. This was turning into a family theme.)

It wasn't common knowledge that their family was one of the few remaining who didn't believe the lies spouted by the crown, but it wasn't exactly what one would have called a secret either. Many years ago, Alton's mother had lost her head over the matter, quite literally, and it was out of sheer human courtesy that the same thing had not happened to his father. The blacksmith had since seen the error of his ways, according to those who spoke to him, although his only son was aware of quite the contrary.

They had a history of rebellion, he supposed, and among other things, that meant that he really ought to try his best not to let this young lady captured or killed. He could only imagine his father's reaction if he found out that such a horror had been enabled by his only son's incredibly stupid mouth.

So, in typical heroic fashion, the scrawny inventor bolted out of the door behind one of the many men who had followed the young lady, just in time to see that some brave soul was earnestly trying to climb into Boris's saddle with no thought as to whom the horse belonged. The animal made its protests quite clear, doing whatever it took to get the young man out of the saddle.

There was a loud thud, but before Boris had a chance to turn on the man who had tried to climb aboard his strong back, he had turned tail and run.

The horse looked markedly more proud of itself than it had before.

"Good boy," the inventor said, his tone pleasant despite the duress the situation called for. It was a careful art, working with Boris--if one was stressed or even moderately excited and the animal noticed, well, that was the end of your ride. Alton had learned this the hard way, many, many times.

He pulled sharply on the reins and set off after the young lady himself, and since most of her pursuers were residents of the village and therefore without horses at present, he overtook them easily. Boris's long strides brought them up beside the young woman in what felt like no time at all.

It was at this point that Alton realized he had absolutely no inkling of a plan at all, and, characteristically, no idea what to say either.

"Err."

He pulled the horse round 'front of her and brought him to a halt, hoping the creature's massive size would block her off. He also hoped she wasn't stupid enough to try to duck under a tempermental creature like Boris.

Alton thought for a moment, which was more like nanoseconds, considering the speed at which the average mind works under stress. "When the guards find out you're here, there won't be anywhere to hide," he attempted. That sounded helpful enough, right?

Or maybe a little threatening.

He reconsidered.

"Err, hop on. They won't catch up on foot."

There. That was clearer.
