Welcome to Menre, a large city on the coast of the continent Natalucia. Many people of all sorts live in Menre, due to this being a well-known port city and one of the centers of culture in the land. All of the latest fashions and the most influential politicians are found here, as are the greatest arts and the most well-known developments in science.

A little known fact about Menre, though, is the types of people living there. Everyone knows about the living population, but the question is whether they know of the dead. Behind the stone facade of the houses, underneath the cobblestone streets, is an entirely different city. This is a city of vampires.

Like many vampires, the ones living in Menre are dead by the day and only living at night; but at night they rule. They have porcelain white skin and black circles around their eyes, but lips as crimson as blood. Their teeth look like those of humans at first, but when they are thirsty, their canines will elongate into dagger-like fangs. They must drink the blood of humans to survive. Religious symbols strongly weaken them, but the only think that will kill them is a stake through the heart.

Janis snapped the journal shut, stretching his arms up over and behind his head, leaning over the back of his chair as he yawned. He was ridiculously tired. His master had him copying all of their notes into a journal for some reason or other. He had finally finished now, but it had taken six hours! That was ridiculous! This was yet another reason why Janis regretted being apprenticed to the man who could likely qualify as the most insane in the land.

But still. This was the only place Janis could go. His parents had been killed by vampires. He wanted vengeance, and, for vengeance, who better to train with than the most well-known vampire hunter in the country? The hours were dismal, yes, but he was paid and he learned more and more on how to defeat the vampires. That was enough for Janis.

He rose out of his chair, stretching his back with a groan and making a vow to never sit still for that long again. Running a hand through his chest length red hair, he grabbed a blue ribbon, tying it back at the nape of his neck. Currently, Janis had on very casual clothes consisting of knee-high black boots, tan breeches, and a white shirt, but they were good enough for stepping outside for a quick breath of fresh air. It was around midnight, anyways. Nobody would see him.

With another yawn, he walked over to the door, grabbing his long, silvery-blue tailcoat and pulling it on. Never had he hated ruffled sleeves so much as his did now, he decided as he tried to find his hands. He grabbed a silver cross hanging on the hook where his coat had also hung, hanging the necklace the pendant hung from around his throat - it would be foolish to go outside not wearing it.

Stepping outside, he sighed in relief. The hot, humid summer air certainly was not the most pleasant, but it was far better than the air in the stuffy study. He strolled down the darkened street, relieved that the street-sweepers had lit all of the lamps. They usually forgot about this alley. Tilting his head back, Janis stared at the stars showing through between the small gap between the houses on either side of him. Yes. It was a nice night.

It was a little after midnight as the streets where all lit up. The tales of many vampires still fresh in everyone's mind made it hard for a vampire to gather their prey these days. Many went hungry and shriveled up. Others probably began feeding on one another. Magenta didn't know. Nor did she care. Though she always knew deep down inside one of these days she would become like them. Taking the blood of humans. But it never started out like that. No, she use to be a normal human herself. Her name was Morven Lithe. She lived in the small part of town, the poor side. She became an orphan at the age of five with her sister Umbra. The two were inseparable. Always at each other side. They were identical twins as well. It was when they were seven they were taken in by an old man who decided the children needed an education and a father figure to raise them right.

Morven grew to like the old man a lot. She would do anything to help. It was her sister Umbra who was a bit on the reluctant side. And as soon as she heard she had living relatives, Umbra left Morven to the adoptive old man. It left a hole in her. She felt empty once her sister left. She grew into a lovely teenager. But no one could look at her without looking at her funny. Morven had magenta hair, down past her back and lavender eyes. Some always wondered if she was human. It was at the age of fifteen she met a gentleman by the name of Lucius. Of course she didn't know he was a vampire. They were tutored by the old man, seeing he served as the school. And in the end the two fell in love. But it was not to be. For he turned her into a vampire.

Magenta shook her head as she let the thoughts of the past go. She hated thinking of things that didn't matter anymore. She of course was a different person now. As she sat on the rooftop and watched the street lights go on. She wondered if anyone would dare to walk the streets tonight. Even after being warned of vampire attacks. Of course the person would don protection. Something she would have to take off somehow. But right now she didn't worry about that. Of course she was a weird vampire to the others. She'd smoke drink and even gamble with the humans just to gain their trust and then get what she wanted, their blood. As she rubbed her eyes, she noticed a man walking and decided to follow him among the rooftops.

For some reason, he felt like he was being followed. Janis was unsure of why he felt like this, for there was nobody there. He quickly glanced at his surroundings, just to confirm his thoughts. The dark streets were devoid of any presence aside from his, at least as far as he could tell. Perhaps that was why he felt nervous. It was quite dangerous to travel alone at night, after all. Then again, he did know how to protect himself - against both vampires and threats of a more human nature, such as beggars or thieves - so that should not have mattered.

A quiet scratching coming from above brought his gaze upwards. Was there something on the roof? Janis squinted, trying to see if there was anything above him. All he saw was the midnight blue sky with its freckles of stars framed by the large black shadows that were the two houses. Oh well. It was probably just a rat or a raccoon or some similar pest. After all, those certainly were no rarity here.

Janis stifled a yawn as he turned the corner, walking out onto a larger street, one of the main ones in the city. Here there were at least some signs of life; beggars and prostitutes who had not yet found a client. He glanced hopefully at a small group of them across the street. Perhaps he would hire one for her services upon his return home. It had been so long since he had shared his bed with someone; it would be nice to feel the warmth of another body.

Turning off of the main street, he once again walked down a smaller alley. This one, however, only had houses on one side. The other was open to the sea, only a small stone blocking the road from the deep harbor. The breeze coming in from the sea ruffled his hair gently, the warm air tasting of salt.

The soft gentle breeze of wind went through Magenta's hair as she watched this man another moment. He was a bit odd to her for he didn't act like most of the men and women around here. Something that intrigues her even. It made her feel a bit refreshed to see not all were boring old people. Though he did almost catch her once or twice she was careful not to let him see her until was the right time to jump down and go after her prey. She moved more along the rooftops like a shadow she was becoming more cautious. As she looked over the rooftop she noticed he moved into an alley.

She jumped down now deciding it more time than ever to appear. Besides she was getting bored of hunting. She wasn't the typical vampire either. She came more and more behind the man as she watched him with her piercing lavender eyes. She wondered where he was going, what he was doing. She had to remember to keep the human side in her out long enough to grasp the man.

"...I am afraid I might be lost." she said as she stood a few feet behind him. "I am after all just a traveler."

[I apologise that I took so long to reply; I injured my hand and shoulder and they only healed enough for me to be able to type now ^^;;]

The feeling of being followed was ever increasing. Janis nervously touched the cross hanging from his neck. Surely it was just a trick of his mind? All that writing about vampires that he was doing recently was probably just playing tricks on his mind. Yes, that must have been it. He let out a quiet, nervous laugh, in hopes of calming himself. It was all just his mind. It had to be.

Suddenly, he heard a soft, feminine voice behind him. Janis gasped, spinning around, his pulse suddenly racing from fear. He only calmed when he realised it was a small female standing there. She stated she was a traveler. Was she? What was a traveler doing out at such an ungodly hour.

Janis quickly looked her over. She was very pale, yes, and her eyes were the strangest shade of lavender, but there was nothing to indicate that she was a vampire. Perhaps she was actually a traveler, possibly from some far off land. Maybe a boat had arrived, and she had been exploring the city. That made sense. He was by the harbour, after all.

Still... What if she was a vampire? It was unlikely, but that was a possibility. Nervously, Janis reached up a hand, touching the cross hanging around his neck and arranging it so that it was visible over his shirt. Just in case.

"As a traveler, have you not been told that the streets of this city are dangerous to roam at night?" Janis asked, giving her a confused look. What traveler didn't know that? And she wasn't even wearing a cross. This was ridiculous. Who had forgotten to tell her about any of the precautions to take in Midre. "Where are you from? Where are you headed? I will escort you to wherever you must go. A lady as lovely as you should not roam the streets alone."

(it's alright, no worries. I am glad your shoulder and arm are better now ^-^)

Magenta looked him over once more as he asked such questions. He was nervous alright. And because of this she knew he had been reading into many vampire lore. Of course she had to keep her composure here, as to not arise the suspicion she was a vampire. Even though she was. She smiled gently though she knew she would have to lie here. And though he probably noticed by now her eyes and skin as most humans do, she would have to explain that too.

"...I am from a island east of here. I have been traveling a while so I have forgotten the name. I was traveling with my sister before we decided--well she decided to split up and let me walk the rest of the way. Why can't we be out at night? I see no harm in it. The night is more lovely than the day."

She then noticed he took the small cross out of his shirt. Something she didn't like but would let it pass for now. Somehow she would get it off. She always did through the trick of her words. She looked him over again. He was quite cute even with the nervousness. She smiled as he offered to accompany her. That would be a good idea. Get to know him and lure him in more. Magenta sighed then. It was going to be more work than she thought.

"I am headed to the small town of Liza and thought I stop here for the night. I would love it if you accompanied me on these big bad streets" she laughed then.

[Once again, I apologise that I have such a horrible replying speed. I do hope that you don't mind that I do not post all that often ^^;;]

This was absolutely ridiculous. Did nobody on this island where the girl came from tell her anything about the places she was going? Did she not even do any research? That was an absurd concept for Janis, the man who researched just about everything. His mentor often joked that he had researched how to breathe and have his heart beat before attempting so. Of course, that was ridiculous. No human could survive without breathing, after all.

"Have you never heard of the plague of vampires in this city?!" Janis gave the female an incredulous look. "Has no one ever warned you how foolish it is to be out at night, especially with nothing such as a cross or garlic to protect you?" He didn't even comment on her and her sister splitting up; the sheer amount of stupid around this girl was already overwhelming him.

He sighed, trying to avoid rolling his eyes in exasperation. This girl was really quite a fool. "Do you know where you wish to stay for the night? I have lived in this city my entire life; I know where just about everything is." This wasn't a boast, this was the truth. Janis couldn't remember ever having left Midre at any point in his life. He had always been living here, chained by no will to adventure and no money to support him even if he wanted to.

Suddenly, he remembered something, and held out his hand. "I'm Janis Bauer, by the way. Pleased to make your acquaintance."

(again no worries, I don't mind the wait =) it helps me think things up)

Magenta tilted her head at him and sighed. Seemed this man was more researched about these things than she was. Of course she also was a vampire and he didn't know that. So she did seem stupid to him at the moment. She waved it off for now. Magenta then noticed the man holding out his hand and she grasped it firmly shaking it. She just smiled and let the boy think anything he wanted for now. She'd change all that later. But something made her think and it was what he had said. That no one came out here without protection. And no one had told her about the coming out at night because of the vampire attacks.

"You can call me Magenta. Everyone does. And I am not as stupid as you think. Just because I am out here during the night doesn't make me stupid. I love the night time more. The way the moon shines on everything makes it better. It's nice to meet you Janus." she then sighed and looked around before looking down. "I have a inn room I can stay in until tomorrow...well I did. I used up all my money last night and I am not sure if they'll let me in."
