| Rubble City was too quiet for Shell today. So far, nobody had been around for her to take stuff from, and everyone was out on patrol looking for any other potential people to take stuff from. So therefore, she was bored to tears. For now, she was kicking a stray rock with her toe until one of the other Holy Terrors came to take her place. Until then she would stay where she was.

| Malcolm was having a rather nice stroll, heading for the massive mound of rubble that used to be a city. Listening to the complete lack of noise, marveling in the huge blue sky.
Then he heard the snuffling. It was the sound of the dog. That damn zombie dog, and wherever the dog was, her master wasn't far behind. But she hadn't spotted him yet, oh no. If the dog had seen Malcolm, she would start barking, really hoarsely, and the noise traveled. Malcolm would know it immediately if the dog saw him, so he bolted.
Malcolm took off running in the general direction of the city, folded in half at the waist. A hunter's run, even though he was actually the prey. Maybe (hopefully) there'd be some people in the city who'd be willing to kill the damn dog, and maybe even the old man too...

| Tony T. Murlane was not a fan of cities. He hated the crowds, the noise, the smells, the cars, the fast food, the shopping malls, the people, the dogs, the pigeons, the parks, the subways, the manhole covers, the wet cement, the taxis, the stoners, the prostitutes, the freakshows, the weirdos, the clothes . . . the list went on and on. He hated everything about city life.
Luckily, Rubble City wasn't exactly bustling with activity these days. That suited Tony just fine. He hadn't been pleased when he'd been forced to move to the city those few years ago, and though the end of the world wasn't exactly a happy thing, he didn't mind the fact that most cities had been blown off the map. Good riddance.
Still, there were some people around. And there were gangs. And thieves. And cops. And pretty much everything Tony despised about cities. The noise was gone for the most part, but he was still a little antsy and looking to be moving on. He wouldn't mind finding a little place to call his own out in the middle of nowhere. Too bad most of "nowhere" consisted of dry, dead deserts. Oh well.
And so it was with two backpacks of clothing and supplies, as much water as he could find in a variety of containers, his rifle and handgun, and his new favorite shades, which he'd pulled out of the rubble some time ago, that Tony stood in the rubble of Rubble City, contemplating his daily choice: should he stay or should he go, now? It was the same thing, every day. He'd wish he could leave, that he'd grow the balls to step into the unknown and face death in the hopes of a new life...
He never did, of course. Instead he'd just dump his stuff in an alcove somewhere and mosey around the city in search of useful things. Still, wearing a blue T-shirt, scruffy jeans, his favorite cowboy boots and a lightweight cowboy hat, he thought it was nice to at least pretend he had the option to leave if he wanted. More so, he found himself wishing he had a GD gummy bear.
With a sigh, he threw down the pack in his hands and shrugged off the one he'd been wearing, resettling his rifle across his back and sitting on a large block of cement. Today was shaping up to be a boring, "do nothing" day.
A flicker of movement caught his eye, and his pistol was in his hand even before he registered the speck of brown was a lizard. With a quick jerk of the trigger, he blew away, the single gun shot echoing through the silent city.

| Shell was drifting off to sleep when she heard the sound of the gunshot and jumped up. Gunshots weren't the rarest thing to hear, but she had thought that the other gangs ran out of bullets months ago. If someone actually had a gun in this area... well that could be trouble. She had to go see what was going on.
She made her way towards the sound, looking around cautiously as she did. If she ran into rival gangs, things would get ugly. Hopefully they'd remember her bat from the last time she met up with them. She heard some of them still had nail scars on them. She grinned. Nobody messes with the Holy Terrors after Shell messes with them.
----------------------------------
meanwhile...
Reverend Andrew Wells had been in Rubble City for a few days now. He remembered when it was still Ridgeford, though, so seeing it in such a state always made him a little sad. He came here often to visit grandparents, and they would always go get ice cream afterwards. But there were no grandparents and there was no ice cream. Just rocks.
He was back, though. Because he had a message to share with anyone that would listen. He had a feeling that nobody would, really, but it was always worth trying. If he could bring one person to the light, he would consider it a job well done.
The Reverend heard a gunshot in the distance, but didn't really pay it any mind. People were always shooting things. Hopefully the bullet's target was not human.

| Malcolm was running, running always running. The dog had spotted him, and was sprinting behind him, baying for all it was worth. Malcolm didn't dare pause to look behind him to see how close it was. Malcolm reached the big pieces of rubble, and climbed up them, getting out of reach of the dead German Shepherd. Luckily for Malcolm, his thieving experience left him with the ability to climb large pieces of concrete, so Malcolm could stay relatively safe. At some point, he'd actually have to get down, but until then, he could bound from monolith to monolith, looking for help.
Malcolm made his way quickly into the city, noticing tiny sounds of life as he went. Cans here and there. Burn marks from fires. People lived here. Malcolm scrambled onto a large nearby rock, looking around when he heard the gunshot. Immediately, he changed course, and hopped like a flea from rock to rock, somehow keeping off the ground AND going fast enough so that the dog's master wouldn't keep up.
Malcolm saw a figure, heading in the same direction he was, toward the gunshot, and he hit the jackpot. Malcolm had run through cities before, and he knew the people that lived there.
Gangs. This kid, a girl with a bloody baseball bat (nails sticking out!) was just what he needed. The on ly problem was, there was a bit of an expanse between him and the girl, and Malcolm would put hi mself at risk of death by zombie dog if he wanted to get there.
Malcolm picked up a rock, carefully aimed at the dog's head, and threw. Before the rock even hit it's target, he slid down the face of the piece of rubble, sprinted across the open space, yelling as he went.
"Oi, you! With the bat! Do me a favor, and smash this dog's head in!"[/i]

| Shell stopped and looked over at the boy and the dog. What had he done to get the attention of a Rotter? They only attacked when they were intimidated, and were very easy to avoid. But this one was intensely pursuing him.
And the guy being pursued wasn't familiar whatsoever. She knew the gang markers over the city, her own being the band-aid across her nose, and he displayed none of them. Even then, he didn't look like any of the inhabitants. He must be an outsider. Maybe she could attack him afterwards and actually return to headquarters with something to show for her watch.
Usually she would wait until the rotter took the kid down and then go after what was left, but then she knew that there would be one loose in the city, and that wouldn't fly. After weighing the options, she brandished her bat in both hands and ran towards the creature that was once a dog, with every intent of taking it out.

| Charles rounded the corner, panting slightly, and took in the situation. Malcolm, the boy, the thief, was on top of a rock, out of harm's way. Charging toward Maxine (his Maxine!) was a girl wielding a deadly baseball bat. In one smooth movement, Charles pulled his gun out of the holster, and squeezed the trigger, sending a bullet glancing off the ground near the feet of the charging girl.
"Maxine, heel!" He yelled. Maxine growled once, then dutifully trotted back to his side. He pointed the gun at the girl, hoping to freeze her in her spot.
"I won't have you killing my dog," he growled, "She already died once. It's him I'm wanting," he gestured toward Malcolm with the barrel of his gun, taking slight pleasure in the expression of fear that flashed over the boy's face.
"Now, grab him for me, and shove him on down, and I'll reward you. Then, I'll take him, leave, and never come back. Deal?" Charles didn't want to shoot the girl, she looked so tiny, but he also knew what gangs could do to the young. Besides, if she did attack him, Charles could take care of her without wasting bullets. God knows he'd wasted enough shooting at Malcolm. Maybe before he left, he could find the police's stash.
"He's a thief," Charles said to the girl, "and he cares only for his own skin. How long would someone so selfish last in your gang? Hand him over, now, and I'll even let you bash him with your bat once or twice. We have a deal?"

| The Reverend was walking through the rubble trying to remember where the ice cream shop once stood when he heard the commotion. He thought it may have been a tussle between some of the child gangs, but then he heard the voices of older men as well. "Interesting..." He mumbled, making his way over.
The scene in front of him was a very unusual one, with a zombie dog, two older men, and a girl with a baseball bat. They looked as if they were handling the situation nicely enough, so he decided to stand back and observe before trying to interfere.

| Charles lowered his gun slowly, once he was sure that no one was going to bash Maxine's brains in. He got overprotective when it came to his dog.
"Apologies," he grunted, "I don't like people threatening Maxine." His free hand started rubbing Maxine's head, and the dog made a contented growl. Charles considered the newcomer's proposition. A peaceful solution? Doubtful. What he had in mind for Malcolm was far from peaceful. However, Charles knew that he could obtain his goal without shooting anyone he had just met, specifically a little girl.
"I don't mean any harm to you people," Charles explained, "My name's Charles Mason. I've been chasing that kid across two states-" Charles' eyes slid up to the spot where Malcolm had been...but it was empty. It took Charles' mind half a second to realize the boy had wriggled away again, but he couldn't be far.
"Maxine," he barked, "Track!"
-------------------------------------------------
Malcolm had slipped away as soon as Charles had been distracted, moving quietly so not to attract any attention. He hadn't been noticed by either of the two newcomers, both of whom he'd seen coming. As one of them hadn't been noticed yet, Malcolm decided to divest the man of his pockets' contents. It was an easy thing, for the man was too invested in the proceedings (Rotters tend to hold attention, especially when they're trained) so Malcolm took care to steal almost everything of value.
Malcolm knew the instant Charles realized he was gone, for he heard the command given to Maxine. As Malcolm turned to start running for his life (again) he nudged the man he was pickpocketing, alerting the man to Malcolm's presence. Malcolm could only hope the man didn't have good reflexes.

| As the reverend watched the scene unfold in front of him, he looked down at his watch. There was nothing for him to be on time for, but it was practically instinct now. When he looked down, he saw a bare wrist instead. He must have left his watch in his back pocket. He did that sometimes.
As he reached around to grab his watch out of his pocket, he felt another hand slipping in as well. The Reverend grabbed the wrist of the other hand and turned around to see a boy of about fifteen or sixteen. "Thou shalt not steal."

| (Hey, guys, sorry if I take a long time between posts the next week or two. College just started and I'm still getting used to my new schedule > <)
"Wonderful," Tony muttered darkly, glancing at the thief and his target. "Aren't there any normal people left in this town?" His mind flashed to his belongings back in the rubble heap, but hopefully the recent commotion would discourage all but the most dedicated of troublemakers.
"Look, kid," he spat at the boy. "You're not really helping any." He shot a sideways look at the Rotter and its master. To be honest, he wouldn't mind filling the monster full of lead himself and wouldn't blame anyone who did want to take out a piece of its decaying flesh. Sure, he missed his dogs, too, but that was no reason to run with a Rotter.
