I have the silver to buy the weapon, so why can't I do it? what does that message mean?

You need copper to purchase items from the newbie store. Is that where you were trying to buy the weapon from?

They were possibly trying to buy from the Temple of Gold. I tried doing the same thing, but then I realized it used gold.

The shops should tell you which currency they take.

Yup, it's probably the Temple of gold or the newbie store. The first one sells items for gold (donation currency) and the second for copper, a currency you can get in some forums (fun&games, lyrics and storybook). So you need to have enough of those currencies (and not silver) to be able to buy items from those two shops.
